Makoto Shinkai's your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) anime film maintained its #1 ranking for its fourth time this past weekend. As of Monday, the film earned 9.1 billion yen (about US$89 million) and sold 6.98 million tickets after 24 days in theaters.

The film has surpassed distributor TOHO's 6-billion-yen (US$59 million) revenue projection for the film, and is now projected to possibly earn over 10 billion yen (about US$98 million). That would make it the first anime film since 2013 to earn over 10 billion yen — and the first anime film not made by Studio Ghibli or director Hayao Miyazaki to accomplish this feat ever. Ghibli and Miyazaki's 2013 film The Wind Rises earned 12.02 billion yen (about US$123.5 million at the time). So far, the only anime films to earn over 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office are Ghibli and Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises.

Didn't even know anime films made that much bank in Japan, impressive.

Going to see Your Name at LFF in a month, can't wait. The first ever animated film to be in the official competition.

Also, Shin Godzilla doing good box office.
Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi's Shin Godzilla film fell from #5 to #6 in its eighth week. As of September 6, the film sold more than 4.2 million tickets, the highest among all Heisei-era Godzilla films. As of September 4, The film had earned 6,017,239,800 yen (about US$58.18 million) in the 38 days since its July 29 opening in Japan.
