M2 will release nearly every game developed by now-defunct Japanese studio Toaplan for console starting in 2020 in Japan, the company announced at its “ESP Ra.De. Christmas Party: M2 ShotTriggers Do-Kanshasai II” event in Akihabara today.

Mahjong Sisters and Enma Daio are among the titles that M2 will not release, M2 boss Naoki Horii said, as those would be difficult to put out on console.

Toaplan operated from 1984 to 1994 and created a wide array of arcade shoot ’em up titles during its run. It also worked on other genres with titles like Wardner and Get Star, which M2 also plans to release.

Here is Toaplan’s full catalog of games, via Wikipedia:
  • Jongou (1984)
  • Performan (1985)
  • Tiger-Heli (1985)

For those who don't know, Zero Wing is the source of "All your base are belong to us" which is widely credited as being the first Internet meme.

However it was specifically the strange English in the opening of the Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) port that has that famous phrase. If they actually re-release Zero Wing, will they even keep this translation is the question.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
When the Megadrive came out in the uk, the first game I bought was Hellfire from an importer advertised in issue one of Mean Machines.

Being naive, what I did was take the screws out of the cart and plug the ROM directly into the console.

Therefore, I look forward to these games coming out again.

So THAT is why some of those games are not on the Mega Drive Mini.

Also own(ed) Hellfire on the Mega Drive. What a great OST that is!!! I cannot beat the game though but it was my first Shmup.

Really hoping for a compliation (even if split across several volumes). I have most of Toaplan's Genesis/MD catalogue.

Tatsujin 2, Batsugun, and Dogyuun would be dreams come true. Hellfire was one of my first shmups (played the Genesis version when I was a kid) so I wouldn't mind to see it get the M2 treatment.

For the platforming fans, Wardner is worth a look imo

I'll assume they are the Arcade versions.

The Megadrive/genesis OST of Truxton and Hellfire are far better than the Arcade.

M2 handled the Darius Cozmic collection where they handled both the arcade and the console versions of those early Darius titles. It wouldn't be outside their wheelhouse to include both versions in the same package. Fingers crossed.
