Xbox 360 vs PS3 was the last true gen. Look at how many franchises broke out from that gen.

Now seems it's stuck in a mud, we busy doing remakes or making the same games. There's no risk because investors do not like that. There's no innovation.
 
No. It's just different. I get little hype for the big studio titles. Ubisoft, EA, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, etc. i don't really care about like I used to. CDPR and From are the big studios I like, Blizzard to an extent, then a lot of smaller devs. Have played plenty of great AA or less games.
 
Consoles are dead.
Games are still being made, bought and sold.
But those consoles can get bent.

My second post today to say 'get bent'.
Gaming isn't dead, it's just bent.
 
The hardware situation is an absolute disaster at the moment and for the forseeable future with no obvious endpoint.

As far as games are concerned, there is no way budgets could continue to rise as they have without the bottom falling out. You simply can't risk the entire valuation of the corporation for every release and expect every single game to get 5-7 million sales at launch. It doesn't work that way and these corporations that did this are incredibly stupid and signed their own death wish. It simply doesn't make any sense and whoever made these boneheaded decisions destroyed themselves.

As far as available games, indies will continue to release, will increase in production value as tools improve, and devs from former AAA studios will likely start, or join other indies and develop there.

So AAA already had an upper limit, and that will reduce drastically, because they are all imploding themselves, but in general the software will be fine.

I think you should play something other than the latest AAA offering from major publishers. There are a lot of very good games out there.
 
There's more videogames coming out than never before. Sure some (most?) suck but there's still cool stuff coming out and, if those aren't your thing, there's 30+ years of videogame history behind us, so I'm sure there's something there you'll enjoy playing.
 
It's becoming a luxury just like many other things that are now catering only to the rich, but not the poor or the middle class.

Whales could sustain the whole industry by themselves one day.
 
Um, no. Gaming's better than ever. This year alone I could probably fill an entire page describing all the cool games that have come out and are still coming out. You just need to take more of an interest in non-AAA games, op.
 
I think corporate AAA gaming is in its death rattle.
I think a lot of people saw this, which is why the big AAA companies tried to pivot to GaaS before the house collapses. But it didn't work. Because GaaS fundamentally doesn't work like SP AAA games. You can't sell it on graphics and long story cut-scenes and expensive hype building trailers.
GaaS success is not about the game, it's about build a community that wants to play together. If there isn't a community that makes them want to stay, they'll always be just a tourist to your game and leave when the new shinier game come out next month.

Indie and smaller studios are still around, so gaming itself will be fine.
 
Speaking of cool upcoming games, apparently Grasshopper Manufacture are supposed to be releasing another new game sometime this year. No details on it yet though afaik.

I honestly was thinking about this yesterday, and I kinda wanted to make a thread, but I changed my mind at the end.

The way things are looking to me is like this:

- Xbox is dead. Whatever they are cooking is just another PC, and even if it's not dead and it's actually a full console, it's useless without exclusives. Just buy them on PlayStation
- PlayStation is dead to me. The only reason I ever bought a PlayStation is for its ability to sell the games I played used and make some money back for my next game and so on. With this ability gone, they basically want to lock me to their expensive store with no ability to buy games anywhere else.
-EA is dead, no more need for speed, layoffs even in big successful games like BF6. And even then, BF6 is good because Zampalla ( forgot his name ) took charge but he passed away and that kinda killed any hope for me for anything decent from EA ( EA used to have a soft spot back in the day with games like SSX, Need for Speed, NBA street, even soccer before all the greed. it was part of my childhood gaming. and its sad to see it like this to me. Last EA game I bought was Need for Speed Unbound, which I really loved and 100% finished.
- PC parts are super expensive beyond the point to be ok to swallow the difference and just pay for it. 5090 is more than double the MSRP price, which was too high to begin with, and the same goes for the rest of the cards / RAM / NVME.. Basically, if you want a gaming pc and you have no parts, you are super fucked unless you start salvaging used parts from Facebook or whatever.

Same goes for consoles. Series S is double the price of what it was in 2020? a fucking 6-year-old console that should be sold for 100$ by now is this much? Yeah, fuck that and fuck future consoles too. If Steam Machine is any indication of weak-ass hardware being this expensive, I don't want to buy anything anymore. I'll just ride my 5090 for the next 3 or 4 years and be done with it.

I am not even excited about next-gen PS or Xbox. They're gonna be using old AMD parts with some twists. and with no physical media. i don't feel like I will bother to even watch the reveal live. Just ZERO excitement.

I personally am 100% out of the console market. I will no longer buy anything console-related. Only some used PC down the road if needed if these prices don't go down. or just like I said above. Out of this. my main PC can last me 3 to 4 years, no problem. By that time, if we are still alive and we didn't die from World War 3/4/5 or Covid plus ultra, we can have a different talk.

Too cheap to buy games that he can't trade in, but drops a couple of grand on a 5090... Yup. That checks out !
 
Learn to be content with whatever hardware you currently have, play whatever games coming out of interest you, and try to ignore the noise around the industry. There's no shortage of games to play and we all have eternal backlogs to get through.
 
A lot of great games are still coming out, gaming itself is in a bad spot right now, but i doubt it is anything major.

I recently played Nine Sols, Lies of P, and Black Myth: Wukong. All three are incredible games, and they were made by relatively unknown studios. People don't talk about this enough, but I think it's amazing that an indie studio from Taiwan was able to create a game as good as Nine Sols.

I understand that there have been a lot of negative developments in the gaming industry over the past few years, but I can't agree with people who say we're not getting great games (and well, games are what should generate hype) anymore. Since 2022, we've been getting banger after banger, and I honestly can't remember the last time I played so many outstanding games back to back.

Sometimes it's better to just focus on the games and leave social media behind.

Nah its not dead. Lots of great games still. Especially for nintendo fans.

Look i was dead, and came back. Companies will notice.. Great games = lots of money to be made.
