If they wouldn't have been made otherwise, like Bloodborne or Bayonetta 2 its alright, otherwise its lame for gamers (freaking FFXVI doesn't need to be 'exclusive')

Its a gray area when games like Nier Automata or Wonderful 101 come first to PlayStation, because its understandable certain games simply sell very little on certain Box shaped consoles because of the audience (GamePass should help though) and companies won't even risk a port until they are sure it won't bomb

Exclusives don’t make sense when you fundamentally misunderstand the economic aspect of the business, which you aren’t required to understand to have an opinion.

But people aren't arguing in favor of one console. They're arguing against exclusives.

It would make consoles *more* competitive since they'd need to convince people to buy them due to hardware and not because of exclusives
Yeah, my statement was mostly for the people who don’t think exclusives are necessary for consoles. Imo, exclusives make consoles stronger and more desirable. I do understand that development costs are escalating though which obviously leads to less exclusives.

I really like exclusives when they fully take advantage of the one hardware configuration they are built for. I don't like them when they are just marketing deals.

For example, PC exclusives make no sense. You don't gain any benefit from "coding to the Epic Store." But then you have something like God of War and it shows what can be done when you are tapping into every bit of a specific hardware configuration and why that's advantageous.

I want a set of common hardware profiles made by Samsung, LG, TCL, Sony, MS, Apple, Google and any other hardware vendors that can play the same games at different performance profiles. Each system can have it's own controller, peripherals and store but there must be a mandate for no exclusive games and full cross play, crossbuy and universal saves.

Everyone wins.

I agree. Full exclusives. Only one platform. No timed bs.

Agreed. Love what both Sony and Nintendo are doing in this regard and would hope MS did it as well.
But not really see this happing with them going Xbox/PC all the time.

Why would you want to see me not be able to play Xbox games on my PC? Who hurt you?

So you would’ve wanted HDDVD to survive as well?

I don’t see what would’ve been good about having two movie players under the TV.
Currently I can play any movie I want on my Blu-ray player.
I like that. I want that with games. Doesn’t seem to hurt creativity or pricing or anything at all really.

The reality of the current gaming market is this for an enthusiast gamer:

Xbox Series X - $500
PS5 - $500
Full PC - $2000
Switch - $350

In 3 years...

Xbox Series X2 - $500
PS5 Pro - $500
PC GPU - $1000
Switch Pro - $350

In 3 years...

Xbox 6 - $500
PS6 - $500
PC GPU - $1000
Switch Gen 2 - $350

Etc...
And I have completely dodged the cost of upgrading the TV to HDMI 2.1, and the AVR.

I hate it.
Only reason I can even afford to be everywhere is because I’m always planning ahead and investing in stocks and the stock market is still moving up. I could never afford gaming on all platforms just with my salary. I would have to choose where I put the money, and then I can’t see how exclusives can ever be something good.

No one. It's just not the same. Eclusives kinda loose this special vibe when they are released on PC as well.
Don't get me wrong. I'd like the PC having it's exclusives as well back like in the early 00s. Every plattform should have it's own big AAA exclusives that the others don't. Industry would be much more fun this way.

You didn’t really state how that benefits you or anyone. Seems like you want exclusives for nostalgia alone? I have no problem with exclusives but I wouldn’t be cheering them on.
I think it gives the decision to buy a console more weight and its brand more character.
If consoles are just another device for playing back games, it loses any of that.

Na not for me id rather new fresh ideas , meaning different experiences. instead of the same shit over and over again. I couldn't care less what bit of plastic it plays on

" new exclusive game is coming out and its 3rd person open world where you can crouch in long grass and become invisible, guess what guys there is also a crappy skill tree as well" haven't I just described a lot of modern day AAA gaming ?

Not seeing the point in this day and age. Consoles have rejected their exotic designs of the past and fully embraced PC technology. This is why we see more overlap between platforms than we ever have before. When porting a game requires so little effort compared to past generations, it makes little financial sense to be so rigid in exclusivity. I mean....even Sony is looking more and more towards the greener pastures of PC. I'd love a world where gamers embrace PC as neutral territory and every and all games are available to play no matter what platform they originate on. That way, more gamers have access to all these great games and......console can still have their war. Win/Win. 😃

I'm in general agreement with you but i don't really think anything needs to change~ i also remember the downsides of the time, region locks and such, anyway i don't really feel like there are so many fewer exclusives now~ i enjoyed it when GTA was a ps exclusive though~

Take me back to the PS1 and Saturn days when 50% of the games on each console were exclusives.
As an adult with little time and multiple other activities (kids included) I cannot wait having to buy multiple plastic boxes so I can buy more games I will never play. Good for finances, good for the planet.

No competition imo would really hurt the industry. It would essentially be a monopoly. That’s why there are different phones, movie apps, food, speakers, cars, etc. One console and only one place to buy all the games with the greed of the gaming industry would be a nightmare.

Exclusives drive competition, creativity and generally bring the best out of hardware. Companies want you to buy their consoles, so they will normally try harder with software to persuade people. That’s one reason the Switch is dominating now. It offers genuine exclusives and experiences you can’t get anywhere else.
Theres a lot of ways to have competition besides exclusives. There's the price, the peripherals, the hardware itself, the services etc compared to the competition.

Intel and amd are still evolving their hardware despite having no exclusive content.
Same with nvidia and ati.

If there were two consoles who had the exact games, how would that make a greedy company take over? You have the option to pick the console you want that has the controller that suits you best for an example.

Let's say there were no exclusives.

Microsoft could compete because of game pass.
Sony could because of psvr
Nintendo could because of its a hybrid console.

That's three total different ways to play.

Stares at same 1440p monitor and processor from "what year is this".
Admits to GPU costs....at half whats quoted above.....every 6 years.

Also a Gamepass member and effectively only buys a handful of games a year (4 maybe).
Looks at other IRL gamers and realizes this is more common than whats quoted above.

The minority of gamers are what you are describing.

Most have one console and play maybe 4 games a year....2 of them being their yearly sports game and/or shooter thats pretty much perpetually in the disk drive.

Sounds like wishful thinking.
With Zenimax, MS has a far bigger first party holding that either Sony or Nintendo.
Forza MS
Forza Horizon
Flight Sim
Halo
Gears
Perfect Dark
Hellblade
Outer Worlds 2
Avowed
State Of Decay
Fable
Wasteland
Everwild
Sea of Thieves
Ori
Psychonauts
Banjo
Minecraft
AOE
Grounded
Doom
Wolfenstein
Rage
Prey
Quake
Fallout
Starfield
TES
Dishounered
The Evil Within

Not to mention all the new IPs that are in the works.
You have to be abusing crack to think MS doesn't have games now.
Yeah this gen will be much more interesting, that's for sure

I have 1080p monitors and a 1080ti, but the upgrade plan is very much in motion.

But the point is that if we get more and better platform exclusives we also need to buy more hardware, or we’ll simply miss out on great things. The enthusiast minority buy all platforms without much thinking but the mainstream isn’t doing this so I would rather see less exclusives and more merged platforms so it’s not such a crappy scenario when you can only game on one platform. I really don’t see any upside in feeling that you have to get new hardware, it’s just a necessary evil.

Picture this.
No exclusives.
But a shit ton of games.

You still cant afford said games because only enthusiasts could possibly have the time/money to play through all the great games out on every platform......still end up missing out.

So we would be back to a very similar situation where you are picking and choosing rather carefully what you do with your time and money.

You end up right back at an old'ish PC and one console playing the same 4 or 5 games a year you were going to play whether exclusives existed or not.

The majority of gamers....the non-enthusiasts basically know what they are in for the entire generation FIFA/Madden/COD/F2P-Game/Assassins Creed/Rockstar game and maybe.....maybe that one super hyped "exclusive" game everyone keeps talking about that you end up not liking anywhere near as much as the hype had you expecting.

P.S Not condemning or condoning exclusives simply playing devils advocate.
Knowing that the majority of gamers dont actually give a shit about exclusives because most if not all of what they play are third party titles.

I hereby ask, no demand, that both Sony and MS get more exclusives for their console.
Not timed ones, but rather full.

I only disagree ( today, not back in the days) when we talk about exclusive chapters of long existing franchises, for example a ps5 or xbox only gta VI or Re8, or mg1-2 remake , or everything else from an old franchise I love, would make me explode in anger

Otherwise, console exclusives used to make me hyped as fuck, I remember admiring Halo back in the gcn, ps2 and xbox days, as well as the Nintendo exclusives who made me salivating about getting a ngc, and god of war for ps2

While I prefer the current model of 95-99% of games being on Xbox/PS/PC because console warring is obnoxious, there was a certain magic to the Gen 6 consoles each having a distinct identity due to their exclusives.

However, the specific downside with that was that there were loads and loads of PS2 games that could have been even better with the Xbox hardware or the GCN load times.

I would live it to go back to the Snes/Genesis times, where games of the same franchise were developed by different studios for different systems. I would be jealous of my friend who had the best version of mickey mouse, and I had the best version of Street Fighter 2.

It actually gave a reason to properly check out those other systems. None of this weak ass 'timed exclusive'(who cares we all have massive backlogs) or even dumb stuff like Soul Calibur 2 for one different character for each system.

No man. Do it proper, real exclusivity! That's why I invest in your system. Phil Spencer, learn.

It is a weird situation but thankfully for Xbox fans at least Sony failed to moneyhat Starfield and now instead of a timed PS5 exclusive, it will most likely be a forever Xbox exclusive along with a shit ton of other great Zenimax games. Xbox has so many great studios now all working on at least one first party games those two won't really be missed during their 1 year Sony moneyhat.
Hmm since it was already announced and shit, i don't think MS will keep it out of Sony consoles, maybe the future games.

And yet the top three games of all time one is exclusive, the other two multiplatform and can be played on PC with insane graphics if you have the money for it, or better, you can choose to play with better graphics.

Isn't that what Sony and to an extent Microsoft have been doing with studio acquisition and the purchase of Zenimax for Xbox?

Isn't the first full year of PS5 mostly first party exclusives? Returnal, Ratchet, Horizon, if it makes it god of war, Destruction all stars.

96% of all games are multiplatform. The fact that there is an exclusive in the top 3 is very telling. Most multiplatform games are gaas crap.

Couldn't timed exclusives accomplish that and still boost accessibility?
Don't know what the process is for making timed exclusives. Is it all hands on deck for one version or split up where the other platform gets a percentage done and then come back to it after the initial platform is released?

Sure. Exclusive games tend to be more polished and make better use of the hardware.
