I remember going to buy a new copy of DKCTF at gamestop for Wii U and it was clearly used. I asked the guy why it wasn't a new copy and he gave me some indecipherable corpo speech. I turned 360 degrees and moonwalked out of there then never went back.

Their addition of some retro console games & accessories is sort of nice. At least I have something to look at in there now when son wants to buy pokemon cards.

But it's hard to forgive them for the Funko nerd-pop-culture era, or all the Star Wars trash etc, just awful.

And their absurdly greedy pricing on trade-ins / used games was almost as bad for the future of physical media as anything else that happened.

I want more weird, local gaming stores to return, but I don't really want the GameStop corporation to exist anymore.

They issued new shares during the various meme rallies generating about $10 billion in cash, they have no debt, and the actual business has been profitable since they started pivoting to collectables. They're run by the founder of Chewy who has designs on buying Ebay and monopolizing the collectibles business.

The biggest problem GameStop has is that they hire blue-haired lunatics & anti-social mouth breathers to run their mold dens. I've seen more charisma in my Amazon cart then in a decade + of Gamestop.

Game stop always comes back like the walking dead, having them for trade ins might be reason to stick around, I don't know why they prioritize merch now, the retro games is a welcome.

the stores by me seem to be kind of doing ok.

The PS/Xbox sections are already pretty slim in the stores by me, so GTA VI/next gen won't change that much. The retro section has more wall space than either. Switch has the most shelf space by a large margin for obvious reasons.

They've gone deep into 'culture', from funkopops to TCGs and tons of licensed anime stuff (clothing/toys). The stores by me also have way more PC stuff than they did 20 years ago. Lots of streamer gear and RGB doodads.
