How easy is Rainbow Six Siege to get into at this point? (2022 / 2023)

More specifically, are there custom games? Can you go in with two friends and play against another two friends? Are there bots? Can you play vs AI? Are there any permanent wave-based players vs environment modes? While I'm always looking for a new shooter to play, I don't think I'd want to bother with this one if my only choice is being matched against people who have been playing for years. Any veteran players care to give their thoughts on the matter?

Easy. Plenty of fun missions against AI to learn the ropes. Great game, but expect a learning curve.

There’s also death match now as well.

I believe there are custom game modes, and I'd suggest playing them or (I remember correctly) the tutorial type missions where it's just bots.

Siege has a lot of moving parts and is not like most FPS games.

It requires you to play in a very specialised way depending on which operator you use and the particular gadgets and weapons at their disposal.

Your first 10-20 hours of online play will feel pretty overwhelming. There are a ton of new Operators, and learning how to use them (or play against them) is going to be exhausting. I can't regain the addiction I used to have for the game for that very reason.

Is that co-op vs AI, or more of a single player tutorial? That's why I asked all the questions that I did, because I wanted to cover my bases and find out what all the game has to offer a small group who want to learn at their own pace.

Is it not like Overwatch where most people just main one character?

Not veteran. if you quickly learn through what the operators gadgets do (plenty), you can start diving in. I see plenty of starters in Quick Play.

Siege players swap more since gunplay and positioning are the core skills. Operators are easier to learn since they only differ in gadgets.

Fucking nightmare overall, far worse now that Ubi finally put real punishments in for Team Killing, although it still happens.

BUT there's another awful pile of shit in that game that Ubi won't bother to touch, there are MANY players on Console using devices so that they can use Mouse and Keyboard on console giving them a huge edge.

If you don't like games where you only get one spawn and then have to sit out and wait for your turn next round, you won't like this game at all.

There are far too many annoying gadgets in 2022 in this game, you have to know them all so you can avoid them if you want to be successful.

I've seen plenty of newbies in quick play, it's fucking awful for them.

This game was amazing when it started out for about 2-3 years, ubi became OBSESSED with adding more and more operators and now there are too many gimmicks that are annoying.

Uhh, you could do 2v2 custom games sure. Otherwise there's a lot going on regarding map and operator knowledge.

The versus AI stuff is pretty basic and only good for warming up and/or learning map layouts.

A great game if you are looking to put a few hundred hours into it, but I wouldn't praise it for being 'easy' to get into.

That said there's skill-based matchmaking and you should sink into the trash tiers low enough to have some semblance of fun. But the game really shines when teams are playing competently enough for it to be a game of wits rather than run and gun stupidity.

I can imagine it's gone extremely sweaty by now. Back when I was playing the highest I got in ranked was gold four and there was many strategies and high level play there.

Been playing siege since launch in 2016. The reworking of classic maps completely ruined the game as it now only caters to the pro league scene. They tossed out the fun and uniqueness of the maps and replaced it with "balance" Every room in the game has like 5+ entry points and rotations so you never know where the enemy is coming from unless you get comms from your team. This hurts new players as the maps are now infinitely more complex and requires scouting comms witch new players dont know and rarely communicate anyway.

The best map in the game is the Airplane one. (Witch isnt even available in ranked) Why is it the best? because its the most simple linear and straightforward!

Biggest learning curve for new players are the maps. Goodluck.

It depends where you are coming from. If you have played counter strike or search and destroy on cod you have a reasonable idea of what to expect. There are gadgets that are unique to each operator as are loadouts.

There is SBMM of sorts but it seems very crude. The game is like no other game and I love it but it has some serious issues as well. Probably the big one is downtime there is a lot of sitting around, way too much in fact waiting for people to pick their operator and then load into the map. Then as well if you die quickly ( which will happen all the time).

I kind of wish they would copy rogue company where you select an operator and you play all your defense rounds as that character and the same on offense just to speed things up. They could offer this in quick play and unranked.

Don’t know if it’s co-op, but it’s vs AI and don’t feel like a tutorial.

I 100% agree with this. There are tutorials, but they are VERY basic and barely teach you anything about the game. The Terrorist Hunt game mode is decent at teaching you the basics of some aspects of the game (planting and defending, defending hostage), but the AI performs so different to the 5 vs 5 multiplayer that it doesn't help too much.

However, the game does have a TDM mode as well as a shooting range.

Basically, for the game if you want to get better gun skill, better map knowledge, and learning to play against what other players will bring, TDM and Terrorist Hunt will be your crutches. TDM will teach you how to play against other players, positioning, etc, and Terrorist Hunt can teach you how your operator-specific gadgets work.

It truly is a remarkable game, there's literally no other game quite like it. It's basically taking COD's Search and Destroy and putting it on steroids. The destruction is what makes the game extra addicting.
