Hermen Hulst appreciation thread.

Lmao, well done OP. This is how you troll the sentiments of raging ex PS fans. Most of them are still taking it seriously 🤣🤣🤣.

yea the European Phil Spencer...

look at the state of SONY and they first party. Not a single good thing to say about this guy. Its clueless people like him who are burning the industry. Waste millions ... 200+ on Concord....

People like him should be fired first ... to save countless others.

I read about Guerilla back in 2004 in a video game magazine and i quite enjoyed Shellshock Nam 67 and Killzone.
Absolutely nobody could have anticipated what a nightmare this all would become.

The guy is an absolute legend. He saw the Star Wars-like potential of Concord before anyone else. He had the foresight to buy Firewalk Studios, spending $250 million to build them a new headquarters + fund the game for several years until the triumphant release.

Imagine where the gaming world would be without him.

This thread reminds me that he actually did some great things, once. Seems like one of many talented individuals who have been promoted into positions they aren't suited to.

He is a good person, but it severely lacks courage and he is like a "yes to all" politician. So he both lacks the courage to dare something radically new, and he is maybe also too weak when there is the need to speak his mind. The result are sequels and chasing trends, which are good in some measure, but when they take the most of the development space, the result is stagnation.

That's the problem with gaming. Trend chasing and fads.

Twofold problems. One, it takes a lot of time and money to make a game. Two, by the time the game comes out the fad might be over.

The point of trend chasing or copycatting in the marketplace is supposed to be quick and fast sales. Get in and get out quick. Similar to buying stocks. You ride the momentum of some crazy stock or sector but got to know when to get out. You dont lock and load riding a stock for 5 years and $100M. You got to be nimble. The momentum run might only be 2 months! Or similar to Rainbow Loom knock offs which came fast and furious. No idiot is going to take 5 years to make a knock off.

Unfortunately, when the management is made primarily by suits, they will never be able to understand even the most basic things that would make players happy and so successful business. The management guys that took PS4 were the last ones who really understood what bring happiness to players. Those who took over after them (like Jim Ryan), just rallied on the huge momentum created by the previous management, but the decision made by them started to ruin step by step the great work previously done.

With all this negativity around Sony and the future of PlayStation, let's have a positive thread for a change.

The first game our boy gave us was the amazing and underappreciated Shellshock: Nam '67 by his newfound studio which you know as Guerilla. But I bet you fucking zoomers never heard of that game. Kids can't appreciate good things anymore.

He stepped up as Managing Director and helped turn the studio into a Sony powerhouse. With the goal of producing the "Halo killer", they started with the Killzone series (which is better than Half-Life, Doom and Quake combined) building the Decima engine in the process. Yeah, that Decima engine which beats everything else out there, which is why Kojimbo begged Hermen on his knees for the chance of using it for Death Stranding.

Not resting on their laurels, Guerilla absolutely nailed the shift from shooter-only studio to the absolutely stellar Horizon franchise with Horizon: Zero Dawn – a massive open-world hit that showed off what they could really do. We woundn't have that without Hermen's genius. Which is also why Microsoft and Nintendo don't have anything that can compare. Unfortunately they had to chicken out and port it for the PC plebs, but Sony's PC strategy is all but dead now. The PCMR cucks don't deserve Aloy's grace anyway.

But making the best franchise in gaming's history wasn't enough for the hero of our story. In 2019, Sony promoted him to Head of PlayStation Studios (formerly Worldwide Studios). Since then, he's been overseeing a huge lineup of talented teams. Under his watch, we've gotten incredible games like The Last of Us Part II, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and the continued Horizon adventures. He's also been involved in the most important studio acquisitions like Bungie and Bluepoint and utilizing 100% their talent to leverage more ground for PlayStation. What stands out is his long track record of backing huge creative risks while keeping that PlayStation polish.

From a small Amsterdam studio to leading one of the biggest first-party lineups in gaming, Hulst has shown real passion for both the tech and the storytelling side of games.

25 years in the industry and still going strong.

Peak weekend thread.

OP should be banned for using Herman Hulst and appreciation in the same sentence!

This guy is the worst thing that has happened to PlayStation since ever. He single handedly destroyed the good will of millions of fans coming from PS4, and it's the first generation of PlayStation where first party games are shit and very few.

Also, he is a fuc*ing liar. He said he was going to focus on single player games when he was appointed worldwide studios head, and he has done the exact opposite with GaaS. He even got rid of Shu Yoshida, who hated him. (If Shu hates you, you are a POS).

In fact this is the worst generation of executives working at PlayStation. It really feels like they don't give a shit about the business at all, and gaming in general.

I am just asking for the Masses. Was it not Hulst that wanted everyone working on the GaaS titles?

Edit: I really thought I remember Hulst greenlighting this idea when Jimbo Ryan was there.
