Are the online races pay to win in some way?

I enjoyed the driving mechanics in GTA5, so I might get GTAO mainly for racing, unless it's p2w.

Depends on if host select custom cars to be enabled. Most of the time hosts will leave on default to keep things on =.

They will normally select a good type class of cars. If you want actual competitive races I advised you pick up FiveM and look around their race communities. The game has sub communities to accommodate all the activities within GTAO.
