Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Cyberpunk looks fucking insane on ray tracing pro mode. It has last gen draw distance and whatnot but there are moments where it looks as good if not better than anything else on the console. Makes me daydream about what GTA 6 will look like if CDPR can squeeze this kind of fidelity out of a 2020 game that was intended to run on a PS4.

We all know why but it's this taboo that is always rapidly shun upon in public, but work at home is not more efficient when you're trying to tackle something as complex as games, there's no convincing me otherwise.

This anti-AI movement also has to stop at one point. If Larian speedruns concepts with AI inspiration and they go into development phase faster than ffs go for it.
Oh boy here we go again...
It has almost nothing to do with wfh, Bloober for example is on the record saying remote work allowed them to hire top talent they wouldn't otherwise if they required workers coming to the office.
Oh and many of these studios have offices in several places, just you wait until you find out many workers spend their entire days on Teams/Slack calls because everyone is in a different office or because every meeting room is already occupied.

I won't say wfh is not a problem at all because of course there are always scenarios where in-person meetings can be a plus but mostly it's management and scope that it's the problem.

I believe this is one of the witches. So not a random NPC but still very impressive for a glorified vendor in the game.

I havent encountered her in the game yet. the last screenshot looks AI.

Now we're pretending the faces in this game look good?

This is how the characters actually look in this game, and this is in a cinematic with characters that have dialogue:

From what I've seen it seems that they prioritized primary quest cutscene NPCs, named Greymanes, bosses, and most vendor faces.

TThey look much better with RR on in different light conditions but yeah, character rendering is one of the things where they have to improve the blackspace engine.

Also like march said, main characters looks better.

I work from home and our bosses told us that our productivity went up. They were the ones to shut down our office post covid. I understand that Software development isnt 1:1 with games that also rely on Artists and Game Designers collaborating with Software Developers, but we know so many developers who have shipped games during covid including now legendary games like Baldurs Gate 3 and Expedition 33.

Besides, I have technically always been remote. Our main office was in a different state until the HQ moved to another state and now i work with bosses and employees in three different states providing support and development for clients all across the U.S. Every single meeting ive had was over the phone, then over skype and now Teams. Game studios like Rockstar have development split between 7 studios across 2 different continents and like 3 different countries. Ubisoft's AC teams are in Montreal, Canada they work with the teams in Paris and other parts of Europe. Bluepoint helped develop GOW Ragnorak from Texas. Bend helped ship TLOU2 from Oregon. If they can collaborate virtually. Anyone can. If anything, managed development timelines have only become easier since covid since it forced everyone to keep track of development. I saw ND hiring for jira integration and that app is a god send for managing development projects.

I do agree that the AI hate is ridiculous. Everyone jumping on Oliver for simply stating AI tech has potential is ridiculous. People hating on Oliver and Richard for being blown away by the tech are also ridiculous and I dont personally care for the tech in its current form. I automate everything as a software developer. Been doing it for 16 years and i get it. People dont want to do menial tasks so if i can automate or streamline them, great. Devs have been doing this with procedurally generated terrain, foliage and trees for a decade now. I dont want to see AI assets in games, but if AI can be leveraged to improve development times by automating certain tasks, Great! Get these fucking games out every 2-3 years please.

its 100% management. And the fact that everyone wants to make 50-100 hours games now.

I also find it funny that they make a big deal about everyone being in the office, but Neil was allowed to go film 2 seasons of a tv show despite not just being the director but the studio head. Thats the one guy that needs to be in the office lol

Whoever thought BP should be making a GaaS game instead of another remake or Demon Souls 2 is the person responsible for mismanagement.
Whoever decided to reject Days Gone 2's pitch then chose to waste 2 years making an Uncharted spinoff then cancelled it because of ND's meddling and then wasted 4 more years on a GaaS game is the one responsible.
We dont know what happened with Coalition but i think the regular artists still came to work everyday and drew art assets, and the engineers probably did their work upgrading from UE4 to UE5. We all know Microsoft sucks ass and they probably just fucked up behind the scenes.
And lastly, people dont know a lot about this but after ditching GoW3 early on in its development, Cory went on to study under George Miller as he was developing Mad Max Fury Road. Cory worked on a Mad Max game for a few years before leaving to work briefly at Crystal Dynamics, and finally after 6 years of making NOTHING, he went back to SSM. this guy goes through dry spells like this.

R* - 8 Years since RDR 2 - 2 trailers. No gameplay footage.
They started this mess as far as I am concerned but they are Rockstar and held to a different standard.

At least both trailers have been running on the PS5 with in game cutscenes, and the second trailer had several gameplay shots. their website also had like 200 screenshots. They have actually shown shit unlike Cory, Coalition and 4A games.

Ok, regarding Samson, it was indeed DLSS completely butchering the IQ and hiding the details. Switched TSR native and wow. This is what I want from UE5. Just a very clean crisp image with a really great contrast between bright and dark areas without losing detail in either.

I dont know if it will show up in gifs, but i could definitely see all the detail on the buildings this time around. Switched to DLAA and ray reconstruction is just way too heavy. GPU went from 99% usage to 60% when i turned it off and im honestly not sure what its even doing. I think i prefer the image without ray reconstruction.

I just tested Samson for about an hour

Graphics look really good but my god the game is a disaster. Driving sucks, the combat is clunky as hell when you fight multiple enemies and the missions are so uninspired with no background or context whatsoever

Its hard to believe that members of the Just Cause and Mad Max team is behind this project

Its terrible. Controls are way too floaty. Car collisions are bad. Its a huge disappointment.

Floaty controls and camera are pretty standard for UE5 games.

It seems that devs have to go out of their way to change this (like blooper did with SH2 and Cronos).

This looks good? Compared to what? Good is HFW level

Considering 4A's past partnerships with Nvidia I'd say there's a good chance the new Metro will have path tracing.
But if the game is indeed being announced during a State of Play then we probably won't see the path traced version just yet...

It looks like a remake/mod for GTA4, which is a good thing actually.

Too bad the game isn't that good, I would have played it for sure.

(who am I kidding: I still have to finish RE9 and I have CD installed waiting. I'm old xD)

Cancelled metro gameplay

This is probably pre-alpha footage so the graphics and visuals would be very rudemntry, a bit like what we saw with the GTA 6 leaks.

I'm confident the next Metro game will be a fully fledged visually next-gen title, 4A games were clear about them taking full advantage of next-gen too but we'll see...

I bought Metro on Day One. In fact, it was the main reason why i went back into PC gaming after purchasing a pro and x1x mid gen instead of upgrading like ive always done. Metro came along with RTGI and Alex convinced me to get a prebuilt 2080 PC.

But the game was very mid in terms of art style. I just couldnt appreciate the tech. I never got past the first open world level because the game was so boring, but the visuals did nothing for me. The footage of the other open world areas was also very ugly. Bland desert and a very brown forest area. Thanks but no thanks.

Lets hope they hire better artists and create a more aesthetically pleasing world.

Ngl this post triggered me a bit because Metro games' visual style and world building are some of the best things about those games for me.
At first I didn't like the idea of Exodus going away from the metro but after playing it I was completely sold on it.

Yes this actually from cancelled 2022 build, next week gameplay will look far better

Do we know if they'll actually show gameplay next week?
Exodus' reveal was just an in-engine trailer iirc despite having "gameplay" in the name.

Hopefully they will show actual gameplay (close to final build( this time, that said Exdous still looks good but not as its reveal

Been playing mass effect 2 legendary edition. Honestly I feel like this game looks better despite being 16 years old than lets shimmering game like Alan Wake 2.

What? The Legendary Edition is known for being an absolute shimmering mess. Even forcing 8k doesn't help specular aliasing at all.

- 4A Games - 7+ years since Metro Exodus. Nothing.
They created a VR game after that.

- CD Project Red - 5.5 years since Cyberpunk, only one CG trailer and one tech demo
Phantom Liberty.

- Ubisoft Montreal - 5.5 years since Valhalla's release. Nothing.
Ubisoft as whole is not in a good shape.

- Guerrilla Games - 4+ years since HFW's release. No Horizon 3 footage.
Burning Shores.

Hmm, all 3 images are quite low-res... but I'd also say the 3rd one had an AI-filter applied.
The hands, hair and skin rendering is just too impeccable.
Naturally, that triggered my 'DLSS 5 Anything' craze :messenger_grinning_sweat: :

I found this pic and used FLUX.2-klein-9b-kv upon her:

Those NPCs here I have captured myself. The AI treatment suits them very well, IMO:

On non-human characters, your ordinary AI image enhancer doesn't work that well yet. Needs special training, I guess:

Burning Shores.
These studios have been making DLCs and still had time to release full games or at least show off gameplay at the same time.

GG released Frozen Wilds after Horizon ZD and then within 3 years, had the reveal trailer ready for the PS5 reveal then a gameplay demo a year later. So 4 years, one DLC, one inengine trailer, 1 gameplay demo. This time around, 1 DLC.

CD Project worked on not one but two Witcher 3 DLCs and had the first Cyberpunk gameplay demo (50 minutes of footage at that) in the first 3 years. We are now in year 6 and all they have done is one DLC, and one tech demo.

I think ubisoft is struggling but not graphics wise. Avatar, AC shadows and Outlaws are three of top ten best looking games this gen.

No one has been able to make a game in 3 years for a long time now. Except maybe FromSoftware, who've been relying on the same old assets, mechanics, and animations for 10 years.

This time around, 1 DLC.
Hunters Gathering is their main game now.

That was not 4A Games.
Ok, but it looks like we'll see their next game next week https://www.neonlightsmedia.com/blog/new-metro-game-announcement-rumor-next-week

im not asking for games to be released in 3 years. Just show some gameplay. Let us see why its taking 6-8 years to make a game. Some of these games have been in dev for 6+ years with no gameplay shown. its insane.

GTA6 is different because they have been showing a lot of the world and setpieces. ND showed a short cutscene set in a tiny ship. CD project showed a CG trailer and a demo they said is not in the game. Metro guys have shown fuck all. Cory has shown fuck all. I am willing to give these long dev cycles a pass if the evidence is there that the games will be revolutionary or at the very least ambitious. But lets face it, if they dont have anything to show that means they didnt have anything to show. We have seen this before with Bioware. They just sat there doing nothing for 3-5 years and then quickly put together games in the last 18 months.

Remember Jason reported that ND was being forced to crunch last year to have a vertical slice done by Christmas. The game would be 5.5 years in development at that point and they didnt even have a vertical slice done? Thats INSANE.

Funny, but I dont think any self respecting dev would allow nvidia to completely change the look of their characters like that. Artists would be in complete revolt after seeing 7 years of their work thrown out the door.

Despite what Nvidia said, devs at capcom had no idea their game was being used for the DLSS demo. It will be interesting to see if larger devs like CD project, Rockstar, and even indie devs like Sandfall Interactive reject to implement this photorealism filter.

Won't reject it unless it's a developer with very low self-confidence. You wouldn't dismiss a new technology based solely on the feelings of a few employees.

I assume AI implementation will occur on many levels.
Devs and artists will use it to create and refine their vision or make game production faster/cheaper, and certainly the algorithms will be tweaked to produce exactly what the creators want them to.
Then there is the mod scene, which will change the artistic intent completely, and no one can do anything about it. But it has always been this way, and why not? Having more choices is no detriment.
Nvidia will be the first to provide the tech, and others will follow. It's gonna be exciting, that's for sure.

CDProjekt learned from showing TW3 early when people kept comparing to earlier trailers. It's better to continue cooking and once the game visuals are near finalised, then start the marketing campaign (around 1 year from release).

The game is going to be massive with huge expectations. It's my most anticipated game. They are doing the right thing.

Man, I have to say that after the latest patch, Crimson Desert is just about perfect with ray reconstruction and DLSS 4k performance. Interiors dont have that ridiculous boiling. The shimmering is almost all gone. The flickering is no longer present. Foliage looks detailed and not mushy. The LOD pop-ins are still there but i dont notice them as much unless im flying. And maybe im crazy but im pretty sure they added better moon lighting and more volumetric effects at night. It no longer looks like garbage after dark.

I want to say that yes, all this stuff shouldve been there at launch and my 90 hours of playtime in 20+ days shouldve been with all these fixes, but its really cool to see how far this game has come.
