Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Ingame cutscenes when you speak to a character and there is this cutscene where they are both standing talking to each other. They are awful
Got it, i was talking about pure main cutscenes, not when you chitchat with npcs, i think yotei has better cutscenes overall.

Onestly, shadows was pretty fucking bad aswell in this depertment, for how ugly yotei can look, i dont think it make shadows appear much better when it comes to npcs and digital acting.

They both look 2 gens behind horizon in that department.

If someone told me this was a PS3 game, i would believe them. PS5 Pro ray tracing version.

The scene composition is all off. It looks cheap with low quality assets. Garbage looking water. Garbage looking trees. Piss poor lighting. Absolutely no detail other than some foliage and trees. whoever worked on this game, from artists to engineers to level designers should all be fucking ashamed of themselves. ive seen indie games that have more effort put in.

86 on Metacritic, btw.

I agree and I always complained but at least Shadows has a semi decent conversation camera system that kinda works when chitchat with npcs

Yotei on the other hand has the same style as yakuza but with cheap and stingy animations which is unacceptable for a triple A game and the good cutscenes are sparse and not frequent.

Both are bad dont get me wrong, but I think Sony should be able to afford motion capture even for lesser cutscenes, like they did with Horizon Forbidden West

I post this pictures as an example because I cant find one for Yotei, but this is the type of system they use a lot

It's just normal rasterized lighting behavior. That's normal. People started to see lately how path tracing changes lighting and suddenly going back to non path traced games makes them look flat as shit.

Meanwhile this is what a real game looks like:

yes, its definitely worse than Shadows, and well worse than virtually every other modern game out there. cant believe they didnt have GG help them out with some basic mocap for these scenes. literally 15 minutes into the game you are encountering these awful dialogue scenes and they are poorly lit, acted, mocapped and choreographed. its shocking how cheap it all feels.

Huh? We are not talking about graphics

You are talking about lighting and shadows and how this affect cutscenes. And we are in graphics thread.
Honestly i got so used to path tracing that i instantly notice now lack of self shadowing and general lack of depth in games if they don't use path tracing.

I said it many times. People haven't seen best looking game Cyberpunk2077 yet because they don't have access to good hardware to run it at 4k PT @ 120fps with proper oled HDR. I tried many newer games but nothing beats it. People will be shocked when PS6 will come out and Cyberpunk2077 will be released there with path tracing asking how this game was released on PS4.

I was discussing with Gymwolf the cutscene presentation. Not the graphics in this case but yes I understand your point

Honestly, when it comes to graphics and lighting, I had zero issues with Shadows, to me it always looks amazing, very next gen. My only complaint with Shadows are the lack of motion capture during important cutscenes (and the lackluster writing)

But Yotei has a extremely flat lighting almost all the time, especially when npcs are on the screen, they dont blend properly as I said before. It looks like a ps3 game on steroids. It doesnt help either that npc animations outside combat are very basic and limited

Anyway I know this is a graphics thread but for me good graphics is not only visual aspect or power but how the game looks in motion too including animation. Its the whole package what matter to me personally in terms of graphics because bad animation breaks my immersion no matter how beautiful the game looks

The infamous ice team for sharing tech between studios must have been dismantled :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Not that they ever did any shit anyway...

This looks painfully last gen. Doesnt seem to use any of the big UE5 features and still looks like a AA game. Still looking forward to it, because its basically witcher 3 with vampires

Its first game of former w2/w3 devs, bro, u think they can splurge for 500m usd game? It will be small AAA game budget wise, defo below 100m usd.
If it sells decently well we can expect their 2nd game to be done in much more lavish style, but first one will be very budget oriented.
Personally got 0 problem with that, its new studio w/o any financial reservers or much pull for investors after all, let them prove themselfs here and next time around game will be costing 2 or even 3x as much.

yeah, they probably only did it in the ps3 era.

I was reading through the ubisoft gdc presentation on ac shadows and they were talking about how every team must work on the same engine together because its become virtually impossible to upgrade every single engine. you see this with snowdrop as well. massive didnt just make its own games on snowdrop, they gave it to the far cry and rayman teams. rayman looks amazing in snowdrop. sucker punch is a small-ish team by sony standards and should not be working on their own engine. almost 6 years since tlou2 and no motion matching in the animations. its hilarious how bad the animations look in this game. like midgets running around trying to sword fight. terrible.

ubisoft has some 12,000 employees. sony studios probably total 3,000 not including bungie. plus maybe 3k more admin and marketing jobs at sony HQs in japan and california. you cannot have every studio just make their own engine and do a piss poor job at it.
