Glen Schofield, co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, former VP at Visceral and Crystal Dynamics, former CEO of Striking Distance Studios, and the creator of Dead Space, has announced his retirement on LinkedIn.

After 35 years of making games and directing them, running teams, it's time for me to officially retire from the day-to-day work. It has been such an amazing career and I have so many people to thank for it.

To my close friends and family, and people who have stood by me, patted me on the back, listened to my crazy ideas, thank you so much. To the fans, you've supported me, you've let mine and my teams' games into your homes. You told me when I was good and you told me when I wasn't so good.

But you made me better. Thank you so much.

I liked Callisto Protocol. Anyway, seeing so many veterans retire puts me in a melancholic mood. Mindboggling to think that Dead Space is soon 20 years old.

Massive shame, man. I figure this is probably because of the current state of the industry, lack of financial backing coming from the dev-facing side and conniving publishers like EA withholding creators' visions hostage. I really think Schofield could've delivered a fanserviceable Dead Space on an AA budget that could please the most ardent of fans.

Stupid EA refusing to do another Dead Space.
This is why I keep encouraging people to support indies and AA. AAA pubs are wretched to the core. They in actuality don't give a shit about the creators. Nor the games for that matter.

Dead Space is an all time classic horror game. The sequel is just as good. You can see where the industry started taking a turn for the worst with the 3rd game. Probably didn't help the horror genre until Capcom came back around.

I didn't quite get the idea behind the Callisto Protocol's gameplay decisions. Even when you go back to see how influenced he was by RE4, Dead Space doing well for a few years and then the hype for Callisto Protocol's release. Makes me wonder if investors and CEO's negatively impacted his future work. Perhaps Sony didn't give him good feedback even though they supplied his studio with more employees to help him finish his last game. His work inspired books, comics, side games, figurines and so forth.
