Games with support for obscure peripherals & controllers

Mr Driller works with this too, you can make him dig by making yourself look a twat

And my personal favorite:

Interestingly, the Taiko Tatacon controller has been used in non-Taiko games too.

Kamen Rider Hibiki's game tie-in actually supports the controller (you can see the lil logo at the bottom of the box). In addition to containing a disc featuring "Kamen Rider Hibiki Taiko no Tatsujin Special Edition", a two track sampler version of Taiko featuring music from the show, the game itself had sections playable with the drum.

After you defeat major enemies in the action game, you could switch over to your Taiko controller plugged into the 2P side and finish them off in a rhythm minigame. I've never played the game so I can't say I've tried it, but it certainly seems like an interesting cross promotion lol

Another one I really liked was Taito’s Paddle Controller for the DS that came with Arkanoid DS. It plugged into the GBA slot and worked with the DS/DSlite.

4 supported games:

Arkanoid DS
Space Bust-A-Move
Space Invaders Extreme
Space Invaders Extreme 2

wait it did - on what platforms did it allow this and was it just for the first game ?

The PS2 version of Manhunt 1 had support for the USB Mic. You could lure enemies with your voice and they would react if you made a noise while hiding, it was a pretty intense way of playing the game. Not sure if Manhunt 2 supported it though.

you could use the sega bass fishing controller to play virtua tennis on the sega DC.

I heard anyway.

Don't know about Virtua Tennis but you could play Soul Calibur with the Fishing Controller, In fact Soul Calibur even supported the Dreamcast Keyboard!

It wasn't that obscure but did any game other than the bundled one actually use the super scope?

Battleclash used it and was pretty great.

On topic, I remember a poster on another message board raving about how good it was playing Power Shovel with one of these:

For those times when you want full immersion when using construction equipment to ladle curry onto giant plates of rice.

This little fella sparked a lot of interesting discussion.

https://www.wired.com/2017/01/rez-vibrator-womens-sexuality/

I was so excited by Rez's Trance Vibrator, since it seems to have no other purpose than to act as a masturbatory aid. Its shape is pretty nice, it can slip easily under your skirt or in your panties, it comes with a protective "glove" which you can wash, and it emits a regular pulsating rhythm that gets ever more intense and thrilling the deeper you go into the game. Damn, by the end I was writhing on the floor! Synesthesia indeed.

Am I wrong? Has anyone else found a better use for it?

Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast supports the fishing controller.

Isn't this the case of simply the fishing controller being treated like a normal controller ?

Like the guitar controller .... here is a gif from a video (warning : brazilian language) on my youtube channel of a friend doing the Shun Goku Satsu on the guitar

Not sure if counts as "Street Fighter 3 Online edition supports the guitar controller" ...
But would sure be fun to have the guitar hero buttons there in the game for real, not just some animation in post production

Tetris 64 supports the N64 bio sensor, which clips to your ear and adjusts the difficulty based on your heart rate.

Came here for this.

Also, while not an obscure peripheral, J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings: Vol. 1 for SNES used the SNES mouse.
I think Eye of the Beholder (and other D&D games?) may have as well.

While it's not exactly what the OP is asking for, on the subject of DC Virtua Tennis: You can play it using the standard controller... but using the VMU as the screen.

Wait, so the game actually does guitar note highway if you have one plugged in? Wtf?

I remember hearing that the SNES Mouse works with Super Scope games ...but my collector friends don't both to test it =/

The exact post you quoted said:

I had that too. Space Invaders Extreme with that fine, speedy analogue knob was GOAT-level.

My friend had the PS2 version, which allowed for that. You just needed a usb mic, I believe? Looking at the Xbox box, it seems it also supports it as well, which would just be the regular headset for the Xbox for Live.

Not sure about Manhunt 2, I wasn't a big fan of those games. Way too violent for me.

Frog Fractions 2/Glittermitten Grove spoiler:
The Barbershop Quartet game officially supports the Rock Band microphone, as per the Kickstarter campaign.

Gametrak was a 2004 controller for PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC that tried to do the Wii thing in a much less elegant way.

It came bundled with Dark Wind (boxing game). I think the only other games to support it were different versions of Real World Golf.

There's a number of controllers that try to give you the Arcade experience at home, especially for rhythm games like:

DDR

Pop'n Music

Hatsune Miku

Not sure if it counts as the peripheral was built into the cartridge, but Boktai's solar sensor comes to mind.
One of the first things I bought on ebay was an import copy of Boktai. Thought the game was broken until I realized that it was a bootleg version that of course didn't have that sensor on the cart.

I can't find a google image but four swords adventures. 4 GBAs and 4 cables all sold separately

There was a Madden game that used the GBA connections too for selecting plays. I used to play it with that (and of course Wind Waker)

While the Wii Balance Board is not exactly obscure, it still amuses me that Punch-Out!! of all games supports it.

It works exactly as you think. You use a Wii Remote and Nunchuck to punch, like boxing in Wii Sports (but using the A button the change between punching high and low) and you sway on the Balance Board to dodge. It works surprisingly well, too. It may not be as snappy as just playing normally, but it's pretty fun to do.

You can imagine some of the later fights being pretty difficult on the Balance Board, though. So much swaying...

Not obscure but this

in combination with this

was just super awesome. Man I can't wait for Ace Combat VR. Hopefully they'll release some similar peripherie for it then.

Following up on the Boktai Sensor, there were other GB games that included sensors for added functionality on the cart itself:

20+ games like Pokemon Pinball supported rumble via special carts. Perfect Dark GBC not only supported rumble, but also had (for its time) impressive voice acting and sound effects, support for the GB Printer, GB Link Cable and the N64 Transfer Pak.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble for the GBC came with a built-in accelerometer

Yoshi Topsy-Turvy / Yoshi's Universal Gravitation for the GBA had a built-in tilt sensor

Slide Adventure Mag Kid on DS came with a cool little sensor thing you plugged into the GBA port. You had to physically slide the DS around on a flat surface like a mouse to control the on-screen character.

That looks really cool, never heard of it before. thanks for sharing!

.

This is what I straight away thought of when I saw the thread title. I still have a couple kicking about at home somewhere, one in black and one in white

MiniMoni - Shakka to Tambourine! Dapyon!

Not many people know about this game, but Sega released it for the original Playstation and it had its own controller.

Pretty much a poor man's Samba de Amigo. Still fun, though.

Grander Musashi RV (GBC)

Also, not sure if they count as controllers, but the barcode scanners for the Famicom, Game Boy and Super Famicom are pretty nice.

If arcade games count, Boong-ga Boong-ga is the first thing that comes to mind. I will not provide images. Google it and beware. NSFW, probably.

Mario no Photopi was something like a very basic version of Photoshop for the N64 that also included games.
In this case, the obscure accessory would be a 2MB SmartMedia card:
Mario no Photopi (マリオのふぉとぴー Mario no Fotopī, lit. "Mario's Photopi") is a creativity game released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, in Japan only. The game's cartridge has two slots for SmartMedia cards in the top, allowing for the import of digital photos and other images and for transfer between the cards. The pictures can be edited and decorated with font, artwork from the Mario franchise, borders and other graphics.

[…]It is the only game to use the SmartMedia-ready cartridge
-source

Nintendo would later follow up Mario Paint and Mario no Photopi with the Mario Artist series on 64DD.

edit:

A fishing controller for the GB, now that's obscure! I think you win this thread ;)

Donkey Kong jungle beat is my fav.

I also remember seeing a snowboarding game with anime-ish characters that came with a finger board to play the game with. I can't remember the name and i have no idea if it was any good though.I'm sure someone in this thread will point it out.

EDIT: It's called Yanya Caballista City Skater and the finger board attaches to the 2 analogue sticks on your ps2 controller.

holy shit this is such a cool idea
