This is my third time trying it for free. First 2 times was on PC and I just couldn't get into it and quit near the first area at level 15.
This time is on the PS5 and free trial is up to level 60, and I am still struggling to get past the first area. It's just so boring.
Every time I see a cinematic trailer, I think I should give it a try forgetting how boring it is (to me).
Maybe it's time to admit this game is just not for me.
As much as i like FF MMOs, goddamn the trailers are more cringe than ever. That music? What is this, 30 seconds to mars from the early 2000's ?
My friend, you have a Persona 5 avatar. You should be WELL accustomed to slow starts in your JRPGS lolThis is my third time trying it for free. First 2 times was on PC and I just couldn't get into it and quit near the first area at level 15.

How about you over there.

everyone shiver when Soken singing La HeeI got shivers when the remix theme for Heavensward showed up, which in my opinion was the best FFXIV ever was, Stormblood and even shadowbringers never really clicked with me the same way Heavenward did.
If by cringe you mean it's actually good, then I agree.

Nah. Sorry, Visual Works trailers are a treat and I never want them to stop. Nothing more hype when the CG teaser and trailer hits for FF games. One thing i completely despise more than anything is cgi trailers representing games, if i was a dictator id turn this guys like bbq pigs! On a camp fire This should just stop. Its embarrassing it just shows your not good enough to design good realtime graphics and its false advertising. Fraud.
GOOd luck, youll join the bbq.Nah. Sorry, Visual Works trailers are a treat and I never want them to stop. Nothing more hype when the CG teaser and trailer hits for FF games.
I don't cook well...GOOd luck, youll join the bbq.
I don't cook well...
Dont worry its for my dogs.I don't cook well...
I mean it is an mmo but you can pretty much play it like a single player rpg. You don't really need to communicate with other player unless it is a savage level raid. When you queue for pt, just pretend your party member as npc.Final Fantasy XIV always tempted me but MMORPG are usually not my thing.
At each new trailer, I am on the verge to make the jump.
But the music on this one is a miss for me.
Eventually I'll make the jump

But it's not only that. I am usually really immersed in games I play and MMO have usually (at least from my limited experience) big immersion breaker like repop of "unique" boss or quest item.
Also usually filled with "go kill wild pig" quests. It's a bit cliché and FFXIV might be different.
Then the combat system are usually not that crazy. FFXIV looks a bit more interesting with the boss fight but not sure it's enough.
Also I usually play only one game at a time till "completion" (main story + extra) before playing something else. And I guess FFXIV required hundreds of hours for that, I'll probably get tired of it before the end and I don't like to come back to a game "in a middle of a playthrough " (I start from zero if I come back).
But I know I'll give it a try once, it looks to good for not trying.
I only watch final fantasy cgi films. Thats where it ends i dont need cgi on games.FF is known for its high production value cg sequences. Has been since 1997. To stop now would be to go against the very essence & soul of the series. Also worth noting that these large patch trailers are the openers to the game itself when you reach that level in the story.
It's the Intro Movie to the main menu screen. They show plenty of the game itself alongside the trailer.I only watch final fantasy cgi films. Thats where it ends i dont need cgi on games.
i mean event normal rpg have kill w/e number of time quest.I heard that a lot.

thats why cgi trailer exist. because it miles ahead of gameplay and even prerendered visuals. this is purely for fancy presentation. One thing i completely despise more than anything is cgi trailers representing games, if i was a dictator id turn this guys like bbq pigs! looking at the in game cut scenes, they're more than capable of doing real time trailers if need to. just look some of the patch trailers and you can tell. but the point of these teasers and trailers is to hype people up for a new expansion, so CG trailers is totally fine. and SE has a long history of beautiful and awesome trailers, as does Blizzard too, so it's not like it's a purely JP thing. and given the context, the original ARR "A New Beginning" CG trailer is still to this day my all time favorite of all video game trailers. it successfully give you a new start from one of disastrously beginning. so yes, I am completely fine with CG trailers if done right.
what are some of the other RPGs that you enjoy? maybe we can determent if you would like XIV from those?
here's my personally option, thou as someone who's been a long time fan of XI and XIV (both are "FF MMOs") I might be a bit bias. if you never play a MMO before and you would want to stick to more single player route, you can surely do so in XIV. most things can be done either solo or via the in game auto LFG. you WILL have to repeat some of the dungeons in order to grind xp and sometimes gear to progress, but that's not really all that different than what a lot of other RPGs do anyway. and yes, there WILL be those "go kill 7 wild boars" type of quests in XIV. thou you would also have some rather interesting quests that have nothing to do with the main story. as for quitting and coming back fresh, I mean, this is an MMO so it's not really advised to do so. thou if you're willing to grind thou again you always can. however, if you're only doing it to let yourself to "get into the story" again, there's a function in game that allow you to re-watch all the in game cut scenes whenever you're resting in your inn room. maybe do that instead so you don't actually waste a lot of time and energy whenever you come back from a break. MMOs can be very different in both good and bad ways for those who never played them. I would say just give it a try with the free trial and see for yourself.
I feel that FFXIV at it's heart is a life style MMO. in that it allows you to "live" the game world, so to speak. some MMOs the main point is to grind and get gear and than go with a group to grind harder content etc. in XIV, you can of course grind the high end stuff for the most awesome gear too. but a big emphasis of the game is to just have fun. you can play with fashion (which a lot of people would tell you it's the end game, either jokingly or seriously), you can do gathering and crafting with one of the best crafting system in the current MMO market. you can go live in the Gold Saucer, the in game "casino", and play a huge verity of mini games. and if you really want to, you can even try to get a house and do gardening and interior decoration. it's one of the reason that the game had been so successful, since it's not only focus on "the end game stuff".
True but usually not as much as in MMO (by MMO I think of WoW which is my main experience in the genre so I can be wrong)i mean event normal rpg have kill w/e number of time quest.
Very instructive post. thanks
I liked all the Final Fantasy I played (X, X-2, VII, XV, VI and XII). Well XII not that much but mainly because of story and characters. I loved the combat system which is kind of MMO I guess.
Speaking of which, I absolutely loved Xenoblade Chronicles which also have a MMO style combat system.
I usually like JRPG and also like the few WRPG I played.
As of MMOs, I tried WoW something like 10 years ago. Fun but too many boring quest and not story focus.
Actually I tried FFXIV, when A realm reborn was in beta I think. I know I liked it but don't remember much. I drop it because it was MMO and time consuming. But I only played few hours.
Glad to hear that fashion is a thing. I am a huge Souls fan and I am definitely a "fashion souls" player type.
A bit scare of the "repeat dungeon " for grind but yes it's inherent to the MMOs I guess.
I'll definitely give it a try once I've clear a bit my backlog.
Haha you're such a good advertiser for the game.if you're not in a hurry to level up and just want to do something different, there are these activities call FATE out in the open world in pretty much every zone. they pop up randomly and can have multiple ones going on in each zone. they range from kill a bunch of the mobs in an area, to collect stuff to hand in, to kill a boss etc. they would all have a time limit and you get xp and gil from them (sometimes even items) even if you did not finish when the time runs out. and while the amount is not much, it still helps. and also keep in mind that once you reach level 15, you can get your own chocobo, and eventually you can summon it not just to use as a mount but also as your battle companion, thou only in the open world. you can set it's skills to tank, healer, dps, or even a mix of them. that way you can have an easier time doing these solo stuff in the open world. the chocobo would also grow with you and adjust to your level in terms of HP and such, so when you switch to a lower level job, it would also lower it's stats accordingly.
now the reason I mention all that is because depending on the class you pick, your wait time to get into a dungeon can sometimes be a little long. nothing outrageous, but still, if you want to maximize your in game time, you can always go out and do some FATE and stuff. also, remember to log out in a town or an inn, since that would give you xp bonus. and what would you like to play tank? healer? dps? tanks and healers usually get into dungeons pretty fast, while dps might take longer since there's so many of them. each dungeon would take a light party of 1 tank, 1 healer and 2 dps. while trials and raids would take a full party of 2/2/4 or 1/2/5.
don't worry about the repeated dungeons. they're usually fun enough or at the very least, not too tedious. and almost always pretty straight forward. and when there's gear drop, the jobs that can use those gears can roll need instead of greed so they can out roll other jobs that are rolling for it. and I'm glad you like the fashion part of the game. they're call glamour and you get a quest once you get to a certain level to open and start using them. you get a glamour chest in your inn room that can hold 400 pieces of gear total. keep in mind you can only use the gear that can be use by your current class. so if you are a level 33 warrior, you can't put on glamour of level 50 warrior gear or level 15 healer gear etc. but luckily a lot (and I do mean A LOT) of fashion gear are level 1 all class, so you don't need to worry too much. but there IS a reason for why a lot of people calling fashion (and housing) the true end game. those would often take a lot of gil or some connection to good crafters, so keep that in mind.
all in all, there's a lot to the game and I would really suggest you to just take the jump and give it a try. especially with the free trial right now, there's nothing to lose. try and see if you can get into a server where there's some GAFers playing so we can help. also, with the new expansion coming in Nov and patches coming end of this month and August to progress the story into that expansion, there won't be a shortage of players in game too. so that's always a good thing. hop on over to the FFXIV OT if you ever decide to jump in. we'll do our best to help with what we can.
