Week of August 18th to the 24th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at toddhunter!

What fighting games do you currently play, what are your all time favourites and why?
I only really play USF4 now, mostly because it is my favourite fighting game and mostly because my PS3 died so I can't play any anime (I really enjoyed BBCP while I could play it).

While I'm partial to SF2 and all the associated holiday arcade memories, I'll be boring and say SF4 is my favourite fighting game of all time. While purists might balk at that, I essentially think this is because it was my first "online" fighting game and online was a real game changer for me.

While you could easily argue there are "better" fighting games, SF4 is the game that drew me back and made me want to learn just so I could fight against the seemingly endless line of challenges on PSN (and later PC).
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
To combine the answer, I don't like playing any fighting game with "team" or assist mechanics. TTT2, MVC3, Skullgirls or KOF (to some extent) all lack appeal to me because I enjoy the purity of one character, one set of moves and your best play against the other player. While I can certainly see the appeal for some and the dynamic Marvel style is fair enough, I see no need for a game like Tekken or Sfxt to dilute the gameplay to fit in more character choices.

Hopefully this trend is coming to an end.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
Like many people, it was long days spent in an arcade either playing or watching other people play. I rarely had money growing up, so it was generally a case of standing by the machines all day hoping somebody would come in that I could watch.

Looking back now, the guy running the place probably thought I was a bit strange.

At this time the NES and SMS came out and gaming really started to take off. I'll play most genres today, if done well, but I tend to avoid shooters because they don't hold my attention.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
I always liked Vega (Claw if you will). Put simply, he has a big claw on his hand and young Toddhunter thought that was pretty damn cool. Other than that, I tend not to think about it too much and will just play whoever is fun. Even after years of watching it, I still don't know who half the cast of MVC3 is supposed to be.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I'll pretty much play online. Unfortunately Australia is a very big country, but the population is very small and spread out across a wide area (and timezones). This makes meeting up with somebody in person very difficult but can also be challenging for online play.

Remember how SF4 was my favourite game? Well this is in no small part to actually being able to play it online. Marvel? I couldn't get a game after a month or so. Anything anime? You might find one or two regulars but then it is trying to connect to Asian countries. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.

Hopefully I'll make it to Shadowloo this year, but it is still a long flight and they always put it on a busy weekend for some reason.

My style? I'd call it "Momentum based". I like to sit back and work out what my opponent is doing and then start to go in and "do my thing". This works extremely well in BBCP where you can score a knockdown and then start up with all kinds of bullshit.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I feel I'm pretty good at reading opponents and predicting what they are going to do. This puts me in a good place to react or anticipate their moves and come out on top in the exchange (and then make them guess wrong again). The problem with this is I really struggle when my opponent does nothing and just turtles me out. I'll grow impatient quickly and start making mistakes, as I try to open up somebody without the real skills to do so.

I'm also a "jack of all trades" in pretty much every game I play. For example I feel I can play everybody in SF4 to a pretty good level, but nobody at a high level. Basically I just get bored sticking with one main and would rather learn the whole cast. Because of this, I can be pretty limited in how good I get.

But on the plus side I'm not "guy who plays only Ryu for five years straight" so I'm ok with my choices.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Besides beating some Australian players nobody has ever heard of, there really isn't anything of note. The dream is to make it to EVO "one day" but that is a long, long, way away.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I just want 1v1. Tekken 7 looks like it is going down this path so I'm pretty hyped for that.
Anything else? I'm sure it'll work out somehow. As long as there isn't some terrible F2P model on top... and there probably will be, I'm sure I'll be buying whatever comes out and giving it a go.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Have you done it yet? You should do it.

If you are sitting out or whatever, Horseress.

1) Worst thread title choice.
2) I agree with Toddhunter that Tekken-style team play is a bad fit.
3) Toddhunter needs to explain his Pam obsession, and how big his picture collection of her is.

Don't worry Kalamari, I'll tell those nerds to fall back

For sure. We also need to play some USF4 soon, I've been a bit lazy on getting back into it and busy with trying to get shit prepared for school, but I want to at least play a bit before school starts because at that point I won't really have the chance.

I didn't know VF had that many people playing it

What do you think this is, Real Bout?
I'm kidding of course, I play RB2 myself.

I didn't know what to expect from the teaser, but NYG9 was cool - really laid back, as usual. And it's always fun to see a little bit of Final Tuned, even if I don't know anything about it.

Don't know if you guys have been paying attention but supposedly it's back. Lapchi still wants to do the Masters Series and is postponing it till early 2015 so that he can get Daigo and Kazunoko on board for this. Since this is a PPV, I think they're presence was necessary to justify paying for the event for a lot of people. It sucks that the date conflicts with Topanga League but I'm glad Lapchi did whatever it took to make sure this event still happens.

Earlier this week, articles on Eventshubs and tweets from our head honcho Lap Chi created a lot of speculation about whether or not The Masters Series will go forward.

First things first, The Masters Series will still happen. We’re not giving up on this idea because we’re passionate that it can work.

The WHEN has become a little trickier. The Masters Series was originally schedule for Nov. 7 – 9, dates that we have recently learned conflict with Topanga League A. As The Masters Series is a celebration of our past champions, we feel that simply substituting new players into the spots of past Canada Cup champions would go against the spirit of the tournament.

In order to accommodate Kazunoko and Daigo’s schedule conflicts, The Masters Series will be moving to early 2015. We want to do this event in a very specific way and would much rather compromise on the dates than the quality.

So, what does that mean for November?

There’s going to be a Canada Cup 2014. And with that, another Master. Since we’ve had to refocus in very short order this week, we’ll need a little more time to get everything put together.

Give us a week, and as they say, we’ll release the documents.

In the mean time, we still want to hear feedback from everyone. Please click the link on the right to fill in a quick survey which we will be using to select our side games.

Have the feeling it's Pokken. After Harada planned to announce a different game at Evo, I think this is it.

I really hope this is it.

Even if it's Pokken we're not getting much more than like a still image of the Pokemon walking around an arena or something anticlimactic, lol. Pokemon reveals are so exciting, but they always piss me off.

Yeah.. Harada definitely did not plan to announce Pokken at EVO. For all we know it has nothing to do with Namco.

He is lying. I saw the Tekken 7 logo on the big screen Saturday before the announcement. His story about putting together the reveal trailer at the last minute was ridiculous.

I wasn't going to announce Tekken 7 but when it got leaked I went into my hotel room and created this voiced cg trailer to show to you all.

Well this makes your point of view on the subject from the last topic much more relatable.

It always frustrated me though, because the one game you could always count on finding competition for online has had ass netcode over five years of revisions.

lol, it's been this way ever since I started. Afraid I don't know of any other YT channels that host multiple FG match sets, ones that put up vids on a near daily basis, and thus I mainly stick to Game a-cho.
