Develop: Sony studios have started PS4 projects, Xbox Next aiming for 2013 launch

Take it for what you will...it's nothing too amazingly surprisingly (i.e. someone could pretty easily make this stuff up), but I guess Develop ought to have reasonably solid contacts and stuff.

Preliminary work on PlayStation 4 games has begun at several internal Sony studios, Develop understands.

A trusted source connected to the matter has told Develop that various game projects are at very early stages, though didn’t reveal which of Sony’s sixteen first-party studios had been delegated the work.

Few in the games business expect a new PlayStation to launch before 2014 – the next few Christmases will likely see Sony marketing software for PS3, Move and its new Vita handheld.

It is a company convention at Sony to remain constantly engaged in R&D work on future platforms – in fact PS Vita development began soon after the release of the PSP in 2005. But Develop has been told that several SCE studios now have teams working on PS4 game concepts that could jump into full production if given the green light.

Many developers believe PlayStation 3, which first launched five years ago and has gone on to sell more than fifty million units, remains a high-end machine.

In a new interview with Develop, Epic president Mike Capps said it would be a “very tall order” to build commercial hardware that is a generational leap forward.
“I mean, PS3 is still very bad-ass,” he said..

Microsoft and industry partners are working towards a 2013 launch of the next generation Xbox, Develop understands.

Multiple sources across the industry, from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms, have told Develop they expect the console to be fully unveiled at E3 2013, months before its release. The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility.

E3 2013 reveal? I expect them to announce it at next years E3 but not go into too much info about it so they can build up hype for E3 2013

Seems about right, although 3 years ago I would've bet on next gen starting 2012. I wonder if one or more platform holders try to pull stuff like mandatory online, DD-only, Retail-Steam Model or 70+$ for standard editions.

I care more about what Japanese studios are doing. I wish one of them would say something about what their next gen plans are.

2013 Xbox

2014 PS3

So, basically what everybody had been expecting. I expect both to be powerhouses.

Nintendo has to be happy, especially if they get the Wii U out next summer.

Xbox Next doesn't sound that bad compared to what theyll come up with.

So, shall we play the game "which SCE studios are making PS4 projects?" I'm going with London and San Diego.

The more casual studios?

I'm going for Guerilla, Evolution and Naughty Dog.

Uncharted 4 incoming

Going with Naughty Dog, GG, and maybe Sucker Punch.

I'm not buying any next-gen consoles at launch or even within their first year unless my current-gen consoles unexpectedly die and the new ones are fully backwards compatible, but I'm interested to see what the next generation will be like.

I'm not very interested in graphical upgrades (they're very nice, but expected), but very interested in new console features and things like improved AI/physics.

Actually, Evolution is a really good shout. A new racing IP from the project Gotham guy at launch? Sounds about right!

Edit: Yeah, I can see them working on some downloadable stuff and tech demos!

Some of them still haven't even put a game out this gen. You would be wise to scrap any expectations for next gen since they couldn't handle this one.

Hopefully they work on tools and a decent middleware solution to entice devs

They seem to have done a better job of that with Vita, hopefully that carries over to the PS4. I'm interested to see what they come up with in terms of an OS though, considering what they've gone with for the Vita.

I can already see Microsoft's E3 conference for next year.

Some demos of third party, multiplatform games, like Call of Duty and the like.
A bunch of boring Kinect bullshit that I'll sleep through.
Reveal of some trailers for the next Xbox, codename announced, 2013 launch window
End with a Halo 4 trailer.

Uncharted 3 is the last PS3 Naughty Dog game confirmed.
If the PS4 isn't coming until 2014, they can turn around another 2-year dev cycle to get a game out in 2013. I'm not saying you're wrong - it might be smart to give them three years to get something out for a 2014 launch window - but it's possible for them to turn out one more game this generation, IMO.

Definitely Santa Monica studio. We have not heard anything from them after GOW3. And i refuse to believe that they are just helping other studios and not developing the next GOW.

I don't know about the OS, but the UI will definitely suck based on Vita. XMB and minimalism are dead.

So basically what they did this year except for the next xbox stuff.

Well, what if God Of War 4 is announced at the VGAs?

I really think they will be releasing another game this gen, the God of War 3 assets probably costed too much to let it go to waste. Plus its already going to be 2 years since they released a game and Sony has nothing for Fall 2012

I'm glad someone else was thinking the same thing. I used to pretty much only get Japanese developed games but no I think I only have 4 or 5 out of my 60 retail PS3 games. It's really sad what's happening over there.

"Uncharted 3 isn't just an incremental update," he said. "We did change lots and lots of things - but graphically speaking, it's not going to have the same gap [as between Uncharted 1 and 2]. It was never going to happen.

"The way we made it, how much of the PS3's power we were using... that huge gap that you saw between Uncharted 1 and 2 is the kind of thing that really only happens once per generation," he continued.

"We pushed it really hard. Uncharted 2 to 3 is still a jump, but it's a narrower jump. And going forward, it depends on what we do.

"But I don't think you'll ever see that same jump again, at least on a PlayStation 3. There was just so much power left over in the PS3 when we made Uncharted 1 that we figured out how to use and really took it to town when developing Uncharted 2."

ND should be on board for it.

I don't see Sony launching later than MSFT.
