Call of Duty Warzone Hits Over 6 Million Players in its First 24 Hours, Greatly Surpassing Fortnite and Apex Legends

Activision’s freshly-released free to play Battle Royale, Call of Duty Warzone has hit over 6 million players in its first 24 hours.

The stand-alone Battle Royale Mode for Call of Duty officially launched earlier this week and the game is off to a tremendous start. As announced by Activision overnight, over 6 million players have dropped into Warzone over the past 24 hours. “What a day! 24 hours in and over 6 million of you have dropped into #Warzone”, the publisher tweeted. “Thank you – we’re just getting started.”

Impressive numbers so far from Call of Duty Warzone, but of course, it’s all about sustained players numbers and we’ll have to see how Warzone keeps performing compared to the other popular Battle Royale titles.

Call of Duty Warzone is available now for free on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. As covered earlier, those downloading the title without owning Modern Warfare will be presented with a fairly huge download. Those who own the full version of Modern Warfare are only required to download roughly 20GB of data.

“Call of Duty remains one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time,” said Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard Chief Executive Officer upon the game's launch “With Warzone we are allowing players across the world to experience the fun of Call of Duty for free.”

“Warzone is more than a new era for Call of Duty, it’s a game-changer for players and fans. We’re delivering two incredible modes of play within this massive world that take the experience to a new level,” said Byron Beede, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Call of Duty, Activision. “The teams at Infinity Ward and Raven Software have created an amazing, free-to-play experience that’s accessible to all to jump in right away and have a blast. There’s a ton of content plans and live events to come that will continue to keep fans guessing and ready to experience new thrills.”

Yes lets compare the player count of the most popular franchise with new IPs. This doesn’t make sense at all and no, them all being free is irrelevant.
I generally don't understand the appeal of battle royale. I tried pubg and it's ok but I really see no point in it.
I'd take regular deathmatch over battle royale any day.

It took like 20 hours to download and then I thought it was pretty wack and instantly wanted to go back to Apex.
in other news, anyone still doubting my idea about Overwatch going free?Guaranteed playerbase bump.

I believe its going free to play when 2 drops. But expecting it to go free right now or even Overwatch 2 is impossible. We’re talking here about Activision-Blizzard

lol, Fortnite is bigger than CoD

edit: I mean apparently not this very second, but culturally Fortnite is much more relevant. The biggest thing since Minecraft isn't "new IP" anymore

No it isn’t. I’m talking here about the franchise and not only the BR

Remind me again how of Fortnite players actually plays the original mode?

Sure, but I think skill is what should matter.
Skill matters, but in BR if you've spent 20 minutes in a match you don't want to lose. You might consider other strategies like hiding out or bunkering in (in Deathmatch if you're not in the meat of the battle you're missing out). PUBG was really good at that (before cheaters). In Apex and Call of Duty skill matters more, so I don't particularly like them.

The only BR I liked was Apex. Basically the only reason being the fast paced gameplay that I can find in CoD. The sci-fi bullshit in both Black Ops (the BR) and Apex, made me stop quite quickly.

Now with MW I don't have that issue. I have yet to give it a try, though. The first MW suddenly came back to life in the promod scene, so that is my main FPS again.

I tried warzone and didn't like it. Once you get the mobility of apex, it's hard to go back to cod.

Also, lost of small things that might get "fixed", I hate to hear the guy breathing all the time super loudly while I run or the boxes that are super loud, and the suboptimal netcode, hell I would it if they lower the player count to improve that.

Also, the matches take too long to start and the button mapping... Ugh... I've been spoiled by apex.

Wondering how many will stick around after 1 month. The flood of people wanting to try a novel thing (CoD BR) won't matter if they do not stick around, though that hardly needs to be mentioned.
