You can always go mini itx route. Not all the boards and mini itx cases are expensive. Many of them are actually cheap and you can even put a regular psu in them.

They are not gonna be small size as steam machine exactly. But they will still fit under your TV no problem.

On the other hand you can always upgrade parts. Can't change GPU or cpu on the steam machine which to me is a big deal breaker.

Imagine paying 1400$ for the tb version and can't even upgrade it's GPU down the road. That's just a bad deal.

Asking this much or even if the very basic model of 1050$ for 8gb is just stupid and waste of money. People are gonna get robbed :/
 
I was going to get one but without any timeline or price i build a small form factor PC last month with small case, 9800X3D, 16GB RAM, 2TB NVMe, 1 TB SSD, AIO cooler and 850W SFF PSU.

It cost 1400euro, but i used my old 4070Ti as the card so technically anyone can build the same for 2k with a great 2nd hand gpu.

Yes 2k vs €1200 or so for Steam Nachine but you'll have a right thats upgradeabke and will destroy SM performance.
 
At $599 it could have been a fun niche product that I could tinker with and put in my living room. At nearly twice that price? Nah.

Good question. Price aside, it doesn't have the obvious hook of the Deck (portability). Even without the RAM/Storage crisis, this device was going to be north of $600 which wouldn't be a great value proposition either.

FYI you can install SteamOS on any AMD-based PC and play on your TV
 
At first, I thought if they price this right and do it right, they might actually knock XBOX out of the market. Now I think it'll fare worse than the original set of Steam Machines. I get that the Steam Deck is a really popular peripheral, but what kind of disposable income would someone need for this? More than they can afford I think.
 
It's simply very underpowered and far far too expensive.

Im willing to pay a premium for something that is better than what I already have, but certainly not worse.

Lol, no. My pc is more than twice as powerful as it. Ridiculously overpriced.

I love Valve and Steam in general, it's my main platform, but this is ridiculous. It doesn't bode well for the frame tbh.
 
No way, it would be a step backwards for unreasonable money. The specs of the Steam Machine (SM) only made sense to me if the price was at parity with the PS5 or Series X... I know this is likely not the case, but I can't help but feel the SM is less powerful, yet came out years later. I know it's because of component costs, but I'm so used to tech getting better for less over time.

I do have a Steam Deck and it is still great four years into ownership, and I also use Geforce Now on it. My only real disappointment is that Geforce only supports racing wheels by Logitech. I also have an old gaming PC with a 3080 for games not on Geforce Now, which is leagues more powerful than the Steam Machine. I'm good for now.

Here's my reason:
I'm currently using a docked Legion Go S Z1E for my bedroom TV and it's an eye sore. Plus I have to remember to turn it on before hopping in bed.

This gets me a device where I can access my Steam library of games for better performance compared to what I was using.

Plus, I can keep the controller on my nightstand, which I can use to boot up the device and TV.

I won't be playing AAA stuff on here and will be gaming at 1080p or 1440p on a 48" OLED from like 10-12 feet away.

I don't want a PC in the bedroom and neither does my wife.

Looks like I'll be paying for aesthetics, convenience, and a better experience than what I have now 🤷‍♂️ Price increase sucks but that's the market for you. It is what it is.

My main PC is a 4090. I also have a PS5 Pro and Switch 2.

I love this hobby and game however I can.

Initially when I heard the steam machine performance is average and very close to the PS5 I was like ok that is actually good news because that might keep the pricing low which will result in more sales which lowers the entry barrier to gaming and when game dev/publisher see how many users play on the steam machine they would start making/optimizing their games for it but that ship has sailed and capsized with the price reveal lol

Nah. No real point. I play my PC games on my PC. My Xbox is the console in the living room. Helix is gonna okay myvsteam games in the living room when that comes out and it's more powerful than a steam bo. So no need for me personally.



That don't mean it won't find its audience though. Maybe for PC gamers who want a small box in the living room or bedroom to play some of the less demanding games casually.

It's certainly gonna be an option for people who can't afford the full fat custom build PC.


If it was cheaper it would be a serious threat to the big three. But then again it's already in PS5 pro price ballpark but less powerful. They have really backed themselves into a peculiar situation here. It's a bit to pricey to compete with its most direct competitors ( series X and PS5) and less powerful than them too apparently.


But maybe valve don't expect this to be something that sells millions. At $1049 it's a rough sell.

Nope, I'm getting one too, just can't vote yet. Got an unused 2TB NVMe that I'm gonna pop in. My tower will be for graphics intensive gaming and streaming. Steam Machine is for couch indies and local co-op. I knew it was gonna be pricey given the market, and I doubt things are going to get better any time soon.

That's what I was thinking. If they could have gotten the price closer to 600 dollars. They would have been on to something. But it seems over priced and underpowered/ lacking in performance relative to SX and PS5. And yet it's priced closer to A PS5 pro. This was not a well thought out box.

It's already o own to be more powerful. The rap question is pricing and scalability if their hardware.



People thought series S was a bad idea but in reality it's existence probably makes a great case for itself in the current climate. Not to mention what it has done for optimising games on lower powered hardware. It's going to be a necessity of the hardware side of the industry in the future. Cheaper consoles need to exist. But powerful cost a lot more money than they used to make.


Ideally they even go with three skus next gen:

Low end console that can come in at sub 550 bucks.

'High performance' model will probably have to come it around 750- 850.


Custom SOC in a box that allows for a more PC like upgrade path …PCI slot for GPU, additional vacant slots to add more RAM. A real hyrbrid peice of hardware….. that being the one that the vendors like ASUS throw more powerful CPU and GPUs in…… of course…. This would be my personal option. Just build and spec my own Xbox in a larger console like chassis.
 
I put 'undecided' on poll only because I'm not making any big gaming purchases at the moment.

But I absolutely consider it an option I may reach for in the future. RIght now, I use a raspberry pi as a Steam Link (well, usually use Moonlight now, same concept) to stream games from a PC in my home office over to our bedroom TV. This is for all the games I play with my wife on evenings.

And I can tell you that 100% of the video games I play with her would run perfectly on this, in fact I don't know if the genres we play together would ever exceed these hardware requirements. Almost guarantee you that they won't in even 10 years.

Together we do mystery games (think Sherlock from Frogware series, or Return of the Obra Dinn), point and click (think Amanita Design), experimental narrative games (example: 12 minutes, or Firewatch), art games (Edith Finch kinds of things), occasional puzzle games on the level of Balatro etc, and much more... but if you haven't seen those genres in a while, you might not realize their upper end requirements haven't budged in ages. In fact, I don't think these genres have anywhere to go upward -- it's a waste of money to make them any more high-end or expensive than they already are, so they stagnated in hardware requirements ages ago.

Replacing the stream-from-my-home-office setup with a streamlined, slick looking black box by the bedroom TV would be very nice, a fantastic upgrade in usability. Sony and MS consoles are absolute non-starters, also... we get these kinds of games on deep sale all the time on Steam, and we'd be paying at least 10x in cost if we were stuck in those awful Sony/MS stores, not to mention she likes some pretty obscures ones that don't tend to reach other platforms. Consoles are just not competitive at all in this genre space, never will be.
