This is a tremendous loss as he was THE greatest actor of this generation - hands down.

I'll be watching 'Love Liza' again tonight, seems it wasn't such a stretch for him to play that role after all.
 
I really felt like him and chip kelly are like long lost twins and that if they ever made a movie about chip kelly, phillip seymour hoffman would be the guy to play him. RIP because dude is such a talented actor.
 
Gotta love all the judgmental freaks out there. Obviously it is so fucking easy to kick an addiction, especially opiates. You have no idea what that drug does to the body/mind of someone who has used it. It consumes your every waking moment, to make matters worse we as a society have convinced ourselves that opiates are not that dangerous. After all, they are prescribed by doctors. The majority of people who die from opiate addiction got their start in a doctors office. They got their start because of a surgery or illness. Then they started consuming more and more, eventually moving onto higher doses and finally turning to heroin.

I hope the individuals in this thread who are saying horribly insensitive things never have their lives or the lives of their loved ones destroyed because of an addiction that starts with a trip to the doctors office.

I'm not talking about his mental state when already addicted. He must have started somewhere, and I don't know the circumstances but the assumption seems to be it was a conscious decision.

One of my absolute favorite actors ever. I'm talking top 20 ALL TIME. Fuck everything.

This is a celeb death that has hit me pretty hard. My condolences to his family and friends. We all lost a great one.

I guess this was all I mean. I simply don't understand how someone makes that leap. I understand that they're not thinking rationally, but heroin is heroin. They must know what's likely to happen. It's sad.

You think that's rational too? nope it's not many times begin with friends pressure to try with them, or just for fun, because many future addicts think they can handle the drugs, the others who get addicted are weak...this logic seem rational to you? no? well they aren't but that's how people are in the real world...
 
Fucking bummed out.... Such a waste of talent. When you heard PSH was cast in a film, you knew you were about to see the real deal. Whatever the role, he made it memorable and engaging. All the great performances he could have given, all gone. This is even harder to swallow after having seen The Master recently. Drugs man....

the conscious decision making process of a healthy human mind is a far cry from rational to begin with.

Heroin is heroin? Opiates are opiates. Prescription opiates can be just as deadly than heroin, actually I would argue that they are more dangerous. Prescription opiates are deemed acceptable, after all its a prescription. Heroin, however is viewed as being a dirty horrible drug.
 
I liked him in movies such as Mission Impossible and Everyone loves Polly. Dude was funny as hell but could pull off more serious roles too. Plenty of other movies he did that I cant remember at the moment that I enjoyed his acting. RIP. :(
 
Anyone that's unfamiliar with Philip Seymour Hoffman, I'd encourage you to watch PT Anderson's The Master. A masterpiece, and Hoffman's performance is one of the best of the last couple decades.
 
one of the greatest performances in cinema history was the unreal transformation in Capote.

I just watched it in December and was absolutely looking forward to an award filled future.

I wish the best for his family and friends.Its truly heart breaking.

Drugs are one of the worst curses to ever exist.

May he rest in peace and may his work live on forever.

What great american actors are left? Matthew mconowatever is really becoming something but that's it... Almost all the great actors are European. Anyway if fassbender dies I'm gonna go fucking crazy.

I'm not arguing your point...But you've highlighted what I'm saying as well, which is that a lot of people don't understand how addictive or dangerous prescription pills are....including many, if not all, of the people who take them. For a person to move on from a prescription pill that is misrepresented, to a drug that is known to be highly addictive, scarring, and often lethal...is a rock-bottom transition that I can't even begin to understand. I'm not being judgmental...I simply can't imagine what it must be like to be in that position.

In my neck of the woods, heroin is actually cheaper than prescription meds if you have to go to the street market. At the same time it produces a similar high. Most addicts that switch to heroin mainly do it at first for financial reasons.

It's fine not to understand, but then again nobody ever claimed to understand someone with such a unique talent as him in the first place.

People are different, and extraordinary people doubly so. This applies to unique individuals in any field at any point in history.
