1990's Cartoon Survivor (Do-Over)

i would not consider it shitty and i only read the manga as i did not like how they converted the manga into an anime but still it is from my point of view a far better series than gargoyles or Animaniacs

Edit :

Well there comes a good reason, i am from europe aswell and i never saw the American version of the DBZ saga so i cannot understand the hate towards it.
Well i should let go of it then

How can you vote for the anime if you only ever read the manga? It's a thread about the cartoon. Should we vote for Superman and Batman based on their ridiculously long comic book runs? That makes no sense. The anime was riddled with filler so much so that something only happened about every 5 episodes and even then it'd show Goku doing sit ups in a space ship or it shows the spirit bomb grow just a little bit bigger.

It's pretty much impossible to watch now(without it being the abridged version) because it's boring as shit.

I watched it several years later as it had been constantly on air here in germany aswell.

How the hell can DragonBall Z still be there?

I assume we are talking of Funimations crappy dub. And the series itself was a poorly paced adaption of the manga. Needs to die.

Kill: Dragon Ball Z
Kill: Dragon Ball Z

Save: Superman

Kill Simpsons
Kill Simpsons
If we could have killed this show in the 90's, it would have saved us from the last 15 years of Simpson episodes. That, and screw Lisa. She's a NARC.

Save Superman
Superman "died" for our sins, or whatever that monster's name was.

You need a spanking and not just any kind of spanking.

The only serious contender I can see on that list for Batman is the Simpsons.

But I don't know are we judging it in its prime, or are we judging it as the disgusting whole that wouldn't die?

I think it's best (and least confusing) if we try and stick to the 90s for this thread. It's why some shows bowed out when they did, and I think the point here is to celebrate nostalgia along with what holds up today.

That's how I've voted, anyway. 90s Simpsons is arguably the best television ever produced.

Fair Enough. My top contenders would probably end up being Batman/Superman/Simpsons/Dexter. Not sure on the order.

Gargoyles had its moments too. But I'm not sure it stands at the top.

Off to bed. I'll keep my Beyond votes for now. I'll change them in the morning if it seems like Beyond won't get enough votes and Arnold is in danger.

Yeah they dubbed it, and they sounded very strange to be the least :D
german is not my native language so i always found it a bit odd.

German Dub

lol Vegeta sounds like a little shit
His Catalonian voice was pretty cool. I think thats the best dub Spain got. Valencian was not that bad also. Spanish one is censored to hell and back (not the images but what they say, wich sometimes was rather funny lol)

Hey, I changed my vote last round, but if I'm being targeted anyway maybe I should join the campaign to Kill the Simpson's.
I've disliked that show for so long I don't even remember when it was good anymore.

Kill: DBZ
Kill: DBZ

Save: Gargoyles

Early DBZ hasn't held up well at all. All you do is watch people stand around and talk, then quick flashes appear in the air followed by a still frame of someone getting punched/kicked.

Just stop GAF, you're drunk. Kill the boy in blue.

Kill the blue monster instead.

purplish anyway

To be fair that was probably the best 20 seconds out of the hours of the Vegeta saga :p

At no point during that saga (that I can remember) do they do the whole "no one can see what's happening because it's so fast" thing. If they do it's for a second to explain to the viewer that this is happening at a higher level than the other characters can figure out, and then it's right back to the characters fighting. Standing around and talking is just... it's the criticism that DBZ always gets, but it was never as bad as people claim. The marquee fights are spread out, but there are fights and Dragon Ball-esque adventure in between that.

Anime still has detractors that are like that. If every episode isn't advancing the plot it's suddenly filler and not worth their time. I've never understood it.

I'll give the Vegeta saga a bit of credit for the marquee fights it was my favorite saga of early DBZ. I just really hated most of the Frieza and Cell saga's. IMO the animation took a bit of a dive in the Frieza saga and that's where it started the power level climb craze. At least in the Vegeta saga characters who were weak could still be meaningful like Yamcha cutting off Vegeta's tail.

Kill: Hey! Arnold
Kill: Hey! Arnold
Save: DBZ

Keeping the same votes as yesterday. DBZ had way too much cultural impact to go down so soon. Hey! Arnold felt incredibly safe and generic.

This is the part of the survivor series where it gets hard.

Kill: Rocko's Modern Life
Kill: Rocko's Modern Life
Save: DBZ

I liked Rocko's Modern Life, but I can't put it higher then the others on the list.

DBZ I voted off before, but I think I'll let it last a little while longer, Before I vote for it again.

Btw Anihawk, thanks for reminding me of the Helga on the Couch episode. It's a great illustration of what that show was at its best.

I watched it yesterday after it was mentioned and... yeah...

I never realized her mom was a drunk. I mean, they don't say it, but...

She's a drunk. The Dad is a borderline abusive asshole when he's not being a neglectful asshole. Helga being loopy makes so much damn sense.

no problem. it's an example of what made the show so unique, especially for a show with a kids audience.

i can understand that people think it's generic because it takes place in a real world, but i think that's what sets it apart. maybe it's like a kids king of the hill, if that makes sense. maybe that's why i love both so much.

miriam being a drunk is hinted at several times throughout the series. one episode, she asks helga for some hot sauce to add to a concoction she's making in the blender. another time, she's doing community service for a week. in another, arnold asks helga if her mom had her driver's license back yet.

it's actually really fucking sad, and it gives helga a real place to come from. her parents don't fight all the time. they don't physically abuse her or anything, but she comes from a severely dysfunctional family and can't express herself like a normal nine year old. it gives episodes like arnold's christmas and arnold's valentine even more of an emotional core when she tries to open herself up some more.

oh and as far as retcons go, it has one of the best in explaining her attire. because of one compliment arnold gives, helga spends the next five years wearing pretty much the same thing.

and in dexter's lab didi steals a thing and dexter chases her. funny.

I was a kid with functional parents, so it just never occurred to me that she was drunk. I guess they couldn't actually show alcohol since it was a kids show, but that probably would have been the only way I'd have noticed. I knew she was a bad mother, I just didn't know why.

i had a functional family too, although i had alcoholic parents. calling them smoothies and being generally depressed hits more close to home than if it it was in the forefront, like 'a very special episode of hey arnold'

Stoop Kid (which I just watched) is also a classic. It deals with a real life problem, agoraphobia, in an amusing way. I found longest Monday incredibly exciting as a kid too.

Any other episode suggestions? Now I've watched three.

I have no episode recommendations but your discussions made me realize what a damn good show Hey! Arnold was.

Can't believe we're about 30 mins away from starting top ten rounds.
Should be interesting to see what makes it in.

I always liked the Chinese Checkers episode with grandpa, or the one where Arnold and Gerald get stranded at the end of the bus line.

I think the Christmas episode was one of the best Christmas episodes I've ever seen in a cartoon.
If I remember correctly it was about one of Arnold's neighbours who only wanted to see his daughter again, and Arnold has to go through hell and high water to fulfill his wish. And it was all for a secret santa I think.
It's been a long time since I've watched it though.

i love the longest monday. that's actually the first voice of arnold as wolfgang. the second voice of arnold returned in a season 4 episode as another bully named ludwig.

heat/snow - extremes in weather from the perspective of being a kid. hits me in the nostalgia every time
arnold's christmas - great episode about christmas and what it really means to be giving
arnold's valentine - the final episode with 'first arnold' torin caudell. excellent music from jim lang. probably my favorite episode of the series.
pigeon man - another episode in which arnold befriends a weird guy. ends on a very different note than stoop kid

these are all the touchy-feely episodes. for more humor oriented ones:

the sewer king - arnold has to get his grandpa's watch home in pristine condition
the haunted train - arnold, helga, and gerald board a haunted train
helga's parrot - a parrot recites a poem written by helga about arnold, and it threatens to expose her secret to the world
arnold's weird cousin - arnold's cousin arnie visits, and everyone's a fucking asshole. it's great.
arnold as cupid - arnold tries to get 30-something loser oskar kakoshka back with his wife
