DevJobFail: The worst game job applications ever

I assume these people haven't been taught how to do CV, apply for job and Interviews. When I left school and was struggling when applying for job I was wondering why weren't these skills taught at school.
No fewer than 3 of the courses I took in college had major parts of the curriculum devoted to job seeking (resumes, interviews, cover letters, job searches themselves, career fairs, etc).

I kind of wonder about the quality of a school that doesn't do this to some extent. It's the whole point of attending.

Refusing someone because of their email address sounds like a major jerk move =/
And not bothering to register a free e-mail address with a presentable name sounds extremely lazy.

I guarantee you I have the "worst resume that has ever existed in the history of resumes" story.

Not going to say where this happened other than to say that it was a very well known studio, but I once saw a resume come through that was basically the following:

That was the entire resume. I'm not shitting you, I couldn't make up something this stupid.

I don't even... father's name?
country club application? I just...

what?

Your email address should be your name. i.e. john.smith@mail.com

If you had an application from Mr. Smith above, and one from Ninja_Skillz@mail.com you would give more consideration to Mr. Smith because it's more professional, and doesn't sound like a fucking 13 year old boy's email address.

Reminds me when I used to work for a bank and we received a credit card application from a 65 years old lady using the email "sexybitch18@mail.com" haha.

Yup. It's been gone over plenty of times. Any basic seminar class which is usually required should discuss it. My school also has a carreer services where you can go to get help. The guy at ours is a pro. The amount he knows about interviews and resumes is ridiculous.

let me guess.... he didnt get the job because Nintendo doesnt believe in achievements, right?

Clearly you didn't click the link as he does get the job.

It's about presentation, you need to look formal and not act like you're e-mailing a friend.

Well my school was a crappy private school, luckily my uni has some courses that teach this stuff.

I don't expect someone's personal email to be "professional". How fucking stupid.

I swear more laws need to exist to control hiring practices.

It's the internet equivalent of showing up to a professional interview with a t-shirt and khakies, while everyone else is at least wearing a dress shirt and decent pants.

First impressions are everything.

He doesn't seen to have much interaction with people outside of schoolwork and internship, which shows considering he now made a freaking MLP resume.

So I should have to make a whole new email because some scumbag has a stick up his ass about what people's emails email addresses should look like? Sad that this kind of discrimination is even allowed.

This attitude will get you far in life

I get this from time to time.

"Shit this guy is a CCNP?"

*checks GK*

"No, no he's not."

I've also had guys who were 2/3rs CCNP who couldn't even setup a subinterface, so they are equally as useless.

What's GK?

...And, how does that even happen? I am CCNA certified, and I find config commands to be the easiest part of the material.

Yes, you should make a professional email address. Not just for names but also to protect your personal life from mixing with your work emails. Are you gonna complain that dress code is discriminatory too? Be professional or stay out of professional jobs.

Because someone else with the same qualifications will put the time in to look more professional and get the job over you. Stop acting like you are the only person that will apply for a given job and the employer doesn't get a choice.

Unless you believe that your skills are so sought after that you can do anything you want, then by all means, do whatever you want.

...are you serious? Yes. Jesus.

If you want that job, absolutely.

You should have two emails by default anyway, one for official business revolving around your professional life that deals with professional matters, and one that you can use for other things like social media and more lax communication.

Please don't tell me this is news to you.

I know, the father's name almost made it seem like a joke. I will say it was a foreign person's resume, maybe he just wasn't accustomed to hwo things work over here. But still, you would think he would have asked someone for advice. Or something. Just name, father's name, and hobbies. Weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Did his dad...work there? Was he like...someone high level?

It's not like they are unfairly judging you based on something you can't control. It takes less than 5 minutes to make a genric email which is just your name and maybe a number, period, or underscore in case it's a common name.

It's fair. It is something you made yourself and it says something about you. Interviewers only have so much to go off of and if two candidates are similar I'll take the person whose email isn't SniperKing@yahoo.com

Jesus Christ people - there is discrimination in many forms and you just have to deal with it. If you are trying to get a job, how much effort does it take to clean up your presentation a little? Yes, use a professional email. Yes, check your grammar and formatting in your CL and Resume. If you want to stand out, make it appropriate to the type of job and type of company that you are going for.

If you really want the job, put a little effort into it.

What is your general reaction if you are unable to find the person you're looking for in any form of social media?

I want to know this, too!

The "professional email" thing was something drilled into my head at University (the University even GAVE us "professional" email addresses). It takes less than 5 minutes to set up a gmail...even if you have to go NAME_NAME12345@gmail.com (like mine is -_-;).

I see these resume examples and it makes me feel better about my resume...at least I try to emphasize why my pointless experience is meaningful! (Though, I did apply to a major studio for a..I wanna say it was a Social Media Editor or something, but I wrote the cover letter at night and tried to be sort-of 'edgey' to fit the company's messages in it's marketing.....I didn't even get a letter of rejection from them.)

So it seems that being able to:

- spell properly
- use correct grammar
- not act like a giant, (excessively) egocentric dick when describing yourself

will put you ahead of the game these days. I have a hard time believing that anyone serious about getting a job would put 'don't call me, I'll call you for my starting date' or anything similar on a CV or cover letter. The thought of that would never cross my mind - it just seems so wrong.

In my case, I've been at the same job for nearly 15 years, but I've always tried to stick to the basics on my resume. This includes only listing skills that I've used enough to confidently answer questions about during interviews (generally 10k+ lines of self-produced code in a programming language, for example), a proper e-mail address (a gmail address that actually contains my name and *only* my name), but also includes simple things like SPELL-CHECKING!

Yup. I consider myself lucky to have the job that I do with the hair that I have. It's not even outlandish, it's just different. Different enough for people to make a snap judgment and lock the door behind me as I leave.

It's your livelihood. You do what you have to.

Not game related, but a guy who was interviewing for an IT position at a company I used to work at, this was just a few years ago, in 2012:

Interviewer: So what do think is the future of the IT field?

Guy: Let me drop some motherfucking science on your ass, have you ever heard of virtual machines? They are the future of server management.

Yes, he actually said that, and we had already virtualized our entire environment, along with everyone else in IT at the time. This guy thought he was a visionary or something!

First one to make me chuckle. Motherfucking SCIENCE!

Manuel Correia, SixMinute (@gr9yfox):
I know someone who sent a porn video along with his portfolio ...and got hired!

Holy shit hahaha.

If an email name is the deciding factor for interviewing/not interviewing... you probably don't wanna work there.

Also, I would be very interested in a programmer who did a my little pony resume. People here are free to call it unprofessional if they wish, but honestly? If I want a game programmer I want someone who can prove they're creative. And boy does that resume ever stand out. Also amazeballs sounds like a person who's funny enough to interview too. Some of the other ones are a bit more sketchy, but people I can get down with go against the grain of stuffy garbage like resumes.

Much like that other interview I read, if I was going to decide to hire somebody, it would be because of their prowess. If I was going to hire a writer I would ask them to write something. If I was going to hire a programmer I would ask them to code something/examine some code and fix it. Same for an artist, etc.

I'm sorry, but it looks unprofessional. You may see it as discrimination, but I see it as a reflection on the person. I would not hire someone with an email that I find to be unprofessional; however, a highly qualified individual can get by, but it's a point against him/her. I think something like ninja_skillz will get an eye roll, though not necessarily a flat out shut down.

Just don't send a resume with something like gam3r4l1f3@yahoo, smokerryday69@hotmail, 420baller87@gmail, etc..

Nope. If you have two applicants and they're b oth roughly even, the one who thought more about the e-mail address he/she was going to use had more foresight and will almost always get it tipped in that persons favour.

Obviously, if someone is ridiculously more competent than the other applicants, they're not going to lose out because they have a silly e-mail address, but when it comes down to it, that is something the other guy thought about that they didn't.
It's not like it costs anything or takes more than a few minutes to make an e-mail address that is "firstname_lastname@freeprovider.com".

When I worked at High Moon, we got an application for an environment Artist position...all his portfolio had was a shitty 3D animation of two skeletons having sex.
