1990's Cartoon Survivor (Do-Over)

It's time again for List Analysis!

This time, it's "Just when was that show on air anyway?"

Here I've dug up the first-run airing dates, and sorted by most recent season, as that's probably the best metric for how fresh some of these shows will be in our minds. Tie-breaks are done by first season. From these, I also calculated the middle season, which is another way of looking at when the show's "centre of influence" was.

Ended in the 90s:

I see you quickly edited Superman, ReBoot, and Recess into the "aughts" list! I was about to say, I thought I'd caught a small mistake. Thanks for the list, very helpful.

I know I'm skipping ahead here, but I have to ask based on your avatar: would you say Gargoyles is the #1 90s cartoon?

I would say at least top 5 for me, however I would have to give a little more respect to Batman TAS. If it wasn't for that show disney wouldn't have felt the need to combat it with the creation of Gargoyles. I would say my top 5 would be in no particular order:

-Gargoyles
-Batman TAS
-ReBoot
-Beast Wars
-TMNT

Luckily I built myself a DVD/Blu ray rack out of a wall in my mancave so I have plenty room for them and more, lol.

kinda thinking it might be worth dropping DuckTales if that's the case.

For perspective, Ducktales is no worse an offender for being of the "wrong decade" than:

Batman Beyond
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Home Movies
Spongebob Squarepants

We have 15 shows that partially aired in the '00s, and only 3 that partially aired in the '80s (The Simpsons is in both categories!). Personally, I think that if that's a valid reason to shoot down a show, then the '00s side needs to be culled first.

well, if we're gonna do 2000s after this i don't think it'd be a terribly big deal to cut those 1999 shows either (or at least the ones that averaged 2000/are better known as 2000 shows.

DuckTales is a fine cartoon, but it says 80s more than 90s to me.

The name of the game in this thread, to me, is picking the definitive 90s cartoons, if that distinction makes any sense.

You can make any justification you want, I'm fighting for Spongebob until the bitter end.
It will make top 10 or so help me.

kill: recess
kill: freakazoid
save: hey arnold!

i don't dislike any of these shows. i'm just playing the long game here.

also, it's 'hey arnold!" not 'hey! arnold'

How can we be fighting between Freakazoid! and Recess? Neither show deserves to be killed off yet.

Kill: Aladdin(TV)
Kill: Aladdin(TV)
Save: Freakazoid!

swat kats is going to win because of all this infighting and it will be glorious

also, what is swat kats

Kill: Gargoyles
Kill: Beavis and Butthead
Save: SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron

Gargoyles was just plain generic, the 90s would have survived without that show. Beavis and Butthead is just too stupid/gross for my tastes, and SWAT Kats is awesome.

Gargoyles was far from "generic", it was quality TV. It had a more serious tone, akin to Batman, then most other shows, and was well written, acted and with a strong art style.

Gargoyles at least had an interesting premise: creatures betrayed by man whom have been locked in stone for centuries come back. Swat Kats was another regular joe by day, super hero by night show that included missiles. Gargoyles also had better art.

I'm 28 years old in 3 weeks, fucking sue me. I don't really remember it at all, I think they had jets or some shit? I do however know that I didn't like it, or it did not appeal to me.

No worries. To each their own. I've been doing too much soap boxing in this thread anyways.

Kill : Freakazoid
Kill : Freakazoid
Save : Recess

It's my opinion that Freakazoid is without a doubt the worst superhero show on this list. That being said I did like it as a kid, but I can't let Recess die over it. I loved recess to be honest, it's worse than Hey! Arnold that's for sure, but come on, it basically had Frankie the Enforcer and it had Ellie for The Last Of Us - worth atleast one save in my book!

Kill: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Kill: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Save: Recess

TMNT won't go this round, if you want to save Recess you need to put both of your kill votes into Freakazoid.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I'm also amused at how this thread is actually getting me a little riled up over nothing but cartoons hahaha. Maybe that's why I keep coming back... to be amazed at my own childishness

A lot of radical hate for a show never watched. And with the voting mechanism it only takes a little over %33 of angry voters to kill any show haha.

Yeah this is the same way that Weekenders died. One dude (who was in his teens when the show was on) led a campaign against it posting two low res shitty photos and saying "This has to be bad". People who hadn't seen it started voting it out.

Kill: Goof Troop
Kill: Swat Kats

Save: Freakazoid

I never got into Swat Katz, I wasn't into Goof Troop and I only occasionally watched Freakazoid, but it was more entertaining than recess (which I only saw a little more than a few handfuls of episodes)

One guy is taking this super seriously and is purposely posting bad images of shows to make them look bad so people who have never seen them will vote them off. I didn't want to vote out Freakazoid but if it saves Recess then it has to be done.

People forget that Goof Troop, Home Movies, Johnny Bravo, Tale Spin and worst of all Ren & Stimpy are still on the list. They should've been targets a long time ago.

Ren & Stimpy was a target early on that was greatly defended. Homes Movies and Goof Troop have also had kill votes. I've yet to see any for Johnny Bravo or Tailspin, somehow. I don't think either show is greatly loved. Probably like Hercules they've simply been forgotten.

Those will never win in the final rounds, I'm guessing people want to cull out tougher competition first while the votes are still scattered (I know that's what I'm doing).

Tailspin, the Simpsons, DBZ, Beavis and Butthead, Rocko's Modern Life, and the Powerpuff Girls have practically had zero votes, if any at all. I've seen a few for Johnny Bravo though.

FTFY.

Like everyone else mentioned, I think all of those shows have had saves, kills, etc. Ren and Stimpy, in particular, has almost gone a few times.

You could have also gone after Aladdin or just made a case to save Freakazoid. It's a game of survival!

I've seen a few for Johnny Bravo and Tailspin.

I think PPG and Simpsons have been the most safe so far. Even seen a Batman vote I think.

Yeah, I think nobody wants to touch The Simpsons yet.

Recess is getting heat this round, but it also has almost gone a few times prior, too. Freakazoid had a few occasional kills, but always a ton of saves, too.

Kill: Freakazoid
Kill: Aladdin

Freakazoid wasn't funny when I watched it. Best part was the theme song.

Aladdin was forgettable and well past Disney's peak of afternoon goodness.

Just wondering, when you start the 2000-present survivor(hopefully we can do that one next) can we have a submission period? I only ask because we are still missing cartoons off the 90s list like Magic School Bus, Pepper Ann and Sonic Underground.
the submission period would be right after the final round. I'm gonna ask for suggestions in this thread.
The thread itself would not appear until sometime near the end of the year.
Dont want to burn anybody out.
