Hasn't hit me yet that Matt's actually gone. I have a super weird grieving process. It'll be so odd when Matt is a "used to be" Doctor.

Bring on the 60th with McGann, Capaldi, Tennant, Smith, and Eccleston. Five Doctors II!

New words from Moffat where he's clearly kicking back a bit at those who are screaming for him to leave:

If Russell [T Davies] had stayed on, [the show] would still have changed. I remember when we had our handover chat, he was saying ‘so what are you going to do, are you going to change that?’ and I said ‘well, what would you change?’ and we both agreed ‘it’s time to kick a lot of stuff out’. And actually, it is time again to do that.

I just felt watching last time around [Series 7] that ‘oh, it’s time we fixed that and changed that and moved that up a bit and changed that tone’. It changes all the time, and it’s keeping ahead of the audience in a way. All shows age and they all age sort of in the same way. You learn how to do it, you get really slick at it, and then you think you’re really, really slick at it and everyone’s started to yawn. And you think ‘oh God, we’re really slick at this but everyone knows what we’re going to do’.

So now we’ve got to actually get a bit raw at it and do it in a different direction. It happens on every show – you get good at it and ‘good at it’ is the enemy in the end.

Looking forward to seeing if he actually succeeds in doing something vastly different. There's a rumour the DW TARDIS logo is going in the bin, though, and there WILL be an all-new new title sequence.
 
I was neutral/skeptical on Capaldi, but his "Mad Eyes" entrance has won me over already. I hope he'll bring a return to the slightly lighter, not-so-self-absorbed Dr. that we saw more often in Classic Who with Tom Baker (and to a degree Sylvester McCoy).

The whole "love interest for the Dr." thing needs to die a quick death, Time to make the Dr. less human again, more infuriatingly indecipherable.

And yes, leave Clara on a planet, alone....

Are the one year Capaldi contract rumors founded on a solid base? He seems like someone who would stick around for a couple years at least given how much of a fan he is.
 
I really liked the Doctor's "You're still worried I've got something up my sleeve!" speech to the Dalek ship. I know some people are a little tired of Matt's big speeches, but that was a good one to go out on, and I liked the self-awareness of it.

I think it is true but I wouldn't worry about it...like you said, he's a big fan, and the one year only deal is likely so that he can't get trapped in multi-year contracts. My guess is that he'll give the same 3 or so years as anyone else.

Even if he has been offered a one year contract, I don't see why that means he won't sign another one afterwards, or another after that. Maybe given his age, they just want to make sure he can keep pace with what is known to be a pretty rigorous shooting schedule which will likely involve a lot of physical activity. Please note this is entirely speculation on my part.

I think he will stick around, but him being a fan could actually argue for him only doing one year or whatever - he's fulfilling a childhood dream, after he's done a year he can say that he's done it and that will be his forever and ever. He's a much more in demand actor, has a wife and kid who he probably isn't shunting to Cardiff so he'll be apart from them for 9 months of the year, etcetera. There's a case to be made, so I can understand why people are having the conversation.

That said, I think the one-year contract suits everybody. The BBC is skittish about his age and a backlash, so they didn't want to offer him more in case they needed to ditch him after a year. He probably doesn't WANT to be locked into anything longer, because he's an immeasurably larger known talent than Matt was going into the role, and is significantly better known than David was when he did, too. Chris was on a similar sort of level, but even Chris didn't have an Oscar or the sheer number of BAFTAs and other awards Capaldi has. His Oscar is for Direction, even! He has a broad career compared to the other three.

I think he'll stick around longer than Chris, but not as long as Matt/David. And that's fine. He's going to be magnificent.

My main hope is that the further detached we get from Chris/David the closer we get to the BBC opening them up to Big Finish. Would love more Tennant & Tate stories in particular.

Only with the latest iteration have they made one that I've actually mostly liked, so I hope they continue on that slope back to the classic title style, as opposed to making something new and ridiculous. Same with the logo, enough with the gimicks, just get Doctor Who in some tastefully designed type and consider it job done.

I also wish the title music was less orchestrated. They don't need to go back to the original one, but I feel it would definitely benefit from being more electronic. There's just something inherently unpredictable and mysterious about synthesised music, and that's far more fitting to Who.

He's also a pretty major actor who might not want to get typecast as the Doctor.

I think Capaldi would be good as a one-year Doctor, a palate cleanser after 9, 10 and 11 concluded the 'Time War' super-arc.

As much as I dislike Moffatt at times;

1) He seems like a genuinely lovely person and an absolute Doctor Who maniac in interviews

Yeah it was a bit bombastic. Could hardly heard what Capaldi was saying when he regenerated.

As for Capaldi's contract, I'd be happy either way. One-season long Doctor who will be missed rather than outlive his welcome? Great. Amazing multi-season Doctor who makes them work damn hard to find a replacement up to scratch? Also good. I can't see a situation that's bad really.
 
When on Earth has the Doctor ever been "infuriatingly indecipherable"?

I might accept latter-day McCoy, at a push, but apart from that the character has never been anywhere close to that.

I would hope for at least two years, I don't know if one is really long enough to miss a Doctor imo. I don't miss Eccleston's (though I wasn't a huge fan of his Doctor in the first place) and probably wouldn't miss Tennant either after just S2.

I don't mind losing the DW TARDIS purely because, as ingenious as it is, it's been a bit overused but BOO to losing the title sequence. I like the fact that it looks like a photoshop disaster. There's something too sterile about all the 'better' versions on Youtube. And if this means I don't get Capaldi face in the titles then I'm writing a very strongly worded letter to...someone.

Moffat said it was a single run about a week and a half ago.

This isn't like the run up to series 7, when they obfuscated and span to avoid admitting the split. They're unambiguously doing a single run.

Well, to explain this, here's the way this has typically worked: 1 Series = 13 episodes + the prior Christmas Special.

For instance - Series 1 is 13 episodes. Series 2 is 14, starting at The Christmas Invasion. They tacked TCI onto the front of the same production schedule they used for Series 1. (The way it works is it's Number.X. So Voyage of the Damned is 4.X, Partners in Cirme is 4.1.) They didn't, however, gain any TIME. They were given extra money but filming ran for the exact same amount of time as it did for Series 1's 13 episodes. This led to Love & Monsters, an episode which only features five minutes of Tennant & Piper, and while that was being filmed that pair was off doing another episode at the same time. The same thing happened with Blink, and in Series 4 they just split the two leads so we got Midnight & Turn Left.

This is where it gets a little bit complicated - The Next Doctor was just added on to the end of Series 4 as an extra episode (So Series 4 is 15!) and then the 2009 specials were produced in their own block. Because of this, when we reached Series 5, the prior Christmas special (The End of Time) was filmed by the previous crew. Series 5 filmed exactly the same as Series 1 did, 13 episodes flat. That's why there's no 'Doctor-lite'. Series 6 had A Christmas Carol at the top, and that led to another Doctor-Lite, following the Series 4 model - the companions carry The Girl Who Waited, and The Doctor gets a one-off companion for Closing Time. Series 7 was obviously significantly different due to the split.

Anyway, what this means is... Series 8 has no Christmas episode attached to it if it's following the old structure, because Time of the Doctor was produced under this year's remit. It's a 'reset' year, like Series 1 and Series 5. However, what we do know is that the BBC has commissioned 13 episodes for 2014, and Moffat has said that all 13 will air in that year, too. The way Moffat spoke seemed to indicate that'd be the total, which of course would include Christmas, as we know from ANOTHER interview that the episode was renewed in 2011 for Christmas Specials for 12, 13 and 14. Based on all this information, the obvious conclusion to draw is that the BBC reduced the number of commissioned episodes by one for the actual series and left the Christmas commission in place. This has since been corroborated by spoiler folk with insider knowledge and all that.

It does mean in the future if they keep the same schedule they did before reducing the series by one episode should eliminate Doctor Lite episodes entirely... so there's that. With the series seemingly shifting to an Autumnal broadcast schedule too it's likely they'll shift the Christmas specials to be at the bottom of each series, not the top, which tallies again with production plans for this year.
 
I hate how hard the regeneration hit me. Same with David Tennant as well. I'm super sad.

Loved the Amy Pond bit though. Really sad to see Matt Smith go.

On the positive side of regenerations, the joy I remember at saying goodbye to Colin Baker, now there was a Doctor I wanted to punch in the face repeatably. :P

May you never know such joy during a regen :D

I was rather apathetic towards Tennant's run because at the time I was in no way as big a follower as I am now. Watched the big event episodes, always missed a few in each series though. Also, I felt Tennant had got more than a fair shake at being The Doctor.

Matt on the other hand... I think he deserved a little more. Another Series 5. Series 7 was so shaky in a number of ways.

Even taking into account approximates, and the fact he lies about his age, definitely. He's at least 700 years older than Ten, (400 in 50th + 300 at least in Time of the Doctor). Considering that, he's been Eleven for over half of his life.

It's old clips of Chris, I think, circa 2005. It's just him talking about the Doctor as a character, and what makes him special. One or two of them are (Liz, for instance, as she's no longer with us) but most of them are all new.
 
Just watched Day of the Doctor finally.The episode actually did not disappoint for being a 50 year celebration crammed into a one hour long special. I doubt I'm alone in wishing that Eccleston could've set aside his personal issues with the show to do one final cameo, but that's such a small complaint. I'm quite impressed.

Clara is not growing on me though. She's easily the most attractive companion the Doctor has had, but man is she just flat and boring. If she was like she was in the Asylum episode, it would've been fantastic.
 
I wonder how its all going to work. Capaldi is a great actor but I don't know how well he's going to fit. The young flirty nature of Matt's Doctor with his companions is a big part of his run and what I found entertaining. Obviously it's going to be creepy as fuck if Capaldi does that. I'm sure he'll be very good in what ever style of Dr. they play him as but I'm also worried that the magic might be gone for me.

Right, 300 yrs to the first time Clara comes back in the Tardis. To the second time, I got the distinct sense that it was at least another 100 yrs or more.

For me it's sort of the opposite - she's grown on me quite a bit in the 50th and Christmas episodes. I'm not quite sure why that is, probably has something to do with decoupling her finally from being a macguffin for the show as well as a companion. The other thing that may help is they've sort of gotten away from playing her role more flirtatiously to now something more like the doting grandchild.
 
I'm glad I know near nothing about Capaldi. So many people dropping him already and I have no idea why. I'm definitely giving him a year or so to prove himself.

I don't know if I'd consider that dropping him. Alot of people are excited about what he could do with the role, we are just nervous about what Moffat might screw up.
 
Just watched it today after avoiding spoilers, and as par for the course with Moffat, it was lackluster and disappointing. Regardless it is a good stopping point. I'm done with Doctor Who until Moffat is no longer the show runner now that 11's story is complete.

I'll probably check up on spoilers once and a while to see if/when Gallifrey returns, but I really wish that Moffat would go away.

He doesn't care about Hollywood, that's the thing. On the red carpet at the Thor press screening he described it as a film he did "just to pay the mortgage", something which the studio supposedly wasn't very happy at. He does a lot of stage and niche TV work here in the UK and that's what he likes doing. Very old-school actor. That's his thing, really. He played the Doctor because he wanted to play a meaty role for kids, which he doesn't usually get to do. If you were to ask him, none of us should be discussing this show at all...!
