Apparently a dissenting opinion around these parts but I loved it.
I totally appreciate people's complaints about the story. It was basically just a backdrop to 'The Matt Smith Hour'. But boy, what an hour. Such a varied, emotional, fantastic performance that summed up everything I loved about the character. The resolutions were nice and will probably satiate people for a bit, but I've never really been too concerned with answering 'questions' mainly because the answer will never ever be satisfying. I do like the idea of the Silence being manufactured as clergy so that people are more likely to repeatedly confess though.
But, yeah, by and far the best thing about the episode was Matt, which is as it should be. Such wonderful little moments. His interactions with the children were heartwarming. And I think my favourite moment of the episode, if not his entire run, was the tiny little piece between him and Clara when he's really old. She hands him the cracker but he's too weak to pull it so she holds his hand and helps him. Im sure you could draw any number of analogies for how companions help the Doctor when he's too blind to see that he needs help but...whatever, it was fantastically played.
I love that he gets rid of the bowtie and within an instant Capaldi's staring you down with little to no fanfare. Just an episode that's full of pleasant little moments even if the plot leaves something to be desired. And what a fitting end that the youngest Doctor dies of old age.
