It's impossible to hate The End of Time, as that 'Master Race' joke is the single best pun ever made.

I swear to god RTD wrote that pun first and the episode around it.

And I liked RTD's run

Smith has encapsulated the best of perhaps all Who Doctors - being an excellent character in great episodes and consistently good within numerous shitty ones

I want Capaldi to have a cane that he either uses to deceive people into thinking he's old and decrepit, or smacks people in the face with. Make it a sonic cane or something, I dunno.

In all seriousness I actually have a good feeling about him rocking an ascot tie. One of the first Google image results seems like something that would suit him perfectly:

So basically the Curator?

He had some nice outfits on Inside The Mind of Leonardo.
I especially liked this one:

I'd like something along those lines. Though I guess it's a bit close to Smith's outfit what with the similar shirts and the suspenders under the vest

I watched the Doctor Who movie (8th Doctor, Paul McGann). There was some shit parts in there but overall i enjoyed it. I even watched the Night of the Doctor minisode where he dies and becomes the War Doctor.

Part of me wishes BBC go back to the 8th Doctor and Paul after Capaldis run and do a 'prequel' series of sorts or even just do a few eps where the 8th comes back.

"Wow, with those crazy eyes If Peter Capaldi ever says he's a mad man with a box, he's probably going to sound like a man who is oiling a chainsaw"

So, the SFDebris guy usually goes in depth with backstory, and he brings up the whole thing with Eccleston. He claims it mostly came down to Eccleston wanting some creative control, specifically, wanting a certain director, and he didn't get it. I don't remember hearing that story in the buildup to the 50th, does anyone know if there's something to that?

I would be completely fine with him dressing in something like that.

Will have to check that out, I've been watching some of the Doctor Who stuff on that site and if I had more than 15 GB a month for my Internet I would have gone through all of them (stupid can't get anything but Wireless at my address and Australias stupidly high 4G internet prices).

Also just going to put this out there guys, I'm really going to miss Matt Smith, easily the best Doctor since 2005

That was one of the rumours, yes. It was Joe Aherne, IIRC.

Whether or not it's true... well, I don't think we're going to know for quite a while yet. It's irrelevant, though- Nick Hurran would have been neck-deep in pre-production by the time the talks with Eccleston were going on.

It's Matt's best episode, imo, even if he himself isn't that great in it. Not his performance, just the way he's written, it's like a watered-down-for-a-wider-audience version of his Doctor. He plays it magnificently, and the episode itself is just brilliant. And perhaps the watering down is indeed justified a bit, as it was until last month the highest rated episode he'd been the main, single star in (Day of the Doctor & End of Time Part 2 both did more) , to be fair.

Without a doubt the best Christmas episode.

Yup, its just a generally all round feel good episode.
Exactly what was needed after The End of Time (Even though I love them)

As AP said, its Matts best. I cant find a single fault with the episode.
Even the soundtrack is on another level.

"Marilyn, get your coat!"

Cracks me up everytime.

Gambon is just great in a Scrooge role really. It's so fun seeing the Doctor not get on with someone. Being pally with companions? Meh. Arguing and forcibly changing a grumpy old geezer's timeline in order to save his friends? Awesome.

I just had a dream that The Time of The Doctor was a two-parter and I wanted to rip my hair out at the end. I'm actually glad this is just one episode.

... and Kovarian came back with blonde hair and had a two minute rant about being hungry and wanting cheese, and chicken, and chips.

Good fucking god that episode was terrible. And my SO wonders why I didn't mourn Tennant's exit.

Merry Christmas everyone! Here's an overly long scene of one man devouring a turkey with his hands, a man fervently spitting, and a healthy dose of implied incest.

In other news, the true face of the Doctor has been revealed. Which is both strangely comforting and somewhat unnerving.

You're definitely more forgiving than I of that special. I rewatched it about a year ago and found it to be much worse than my initial impression (which had been that it was rather bland and that I was very sorry for putting my two non-fan friends to checking it out -- a decade and a change later, they're the guys in the crowd cheering when panelists at conventions would discuss the difficulty going on with getting Doctor Who on American television). There were perhaps one or two scenes that I liked, and the rest made my brain gibber at its horriblicity.

But McGann was totally solid throughout the movie. And he was totally great in NotD. And I've heard that in his Big Finish work (the audio-only Doctor Who episodes) he's been spectacular. I think they have enough flexibility that they could very much incorporate him, and I hope that they do so liberally in the next few years. Heck, I was really hoping (not with any serious amount of expectation) that they'd do something really clever and intersperse his actions during his run over the next season or two with the current Doctor's. It would have been something interesting to build towards and not in the "random thing appearing after end of each episode" manner.

But, yeah, I'll take anything, even a few occasional well-produced webisodes.

Sorry. I had to invent a whole new word up there, because none of the preexisting bad ones quite reached down to the level of the '90s Doctor Who movie. ;)

I really liked the second half of part 2, but part 1 was total garbage.

You can laugh at the "Master Race" stuff, but it was so fucking dumb. Like, for the tone it was genuinely trying to achieve, so fucking dumb. It's like RTD took the criticisms of Last of the Time Lords and threw them into a river of fire.

It's why people who say Matt Smith turned the series "kiddy" are absolute morons. I mean, my god, you consider that high-brow sci-fi? Get out!

Doctor Who: Aberdeen researchers reveal 'average' face of Time Lord
The "real face" of television's Doctor Who has been revealed, according to researchers.

With Matt Smith being replaced by Peter Capaldi on Christmas Day, psychologists at the University of Aberdeen Face Lab have revealed the results of their "face averaging" technology.

Images of all the actors who have filled the role in the long-running BBC show were used to develop the result.

The team said it was a "remarkable" result.

David Robertson, from the Face Lab, said: "It's interesting that the face we have developed is not dominated by the features of any one of the actors to have played The Doctor.

"Researchers said the face could guide future casting directors"

what.

It's a children's show. The main thing I always say when people slag off that episode is just to recount my personal memory of it: Christmas day, at my aunt's house, with the whole family. My cousin, then about 9, tearing through the house as soon as the credits began, screaming excitedly that The Time Lords were returning and then spending the rest of Christmas night using his toy Sonic Screwdriver to 'scan' all of the family to check they weren't "about to turn into The Master". You know what, RTD? Mission accomplished! Respect.

I especially respect it because his excitement behind that also ensured he stayed put and deathly silent through some genuinely dramatic, personal two-hander dialogue scenes, which very few kids/family shows or movies manage to accomplish. The second Doctor Who stops doing stuff as camp as that and becomes wanky Star Trek slog I think I'll lose interest, to be honest, and I like (some) Star Trek. It's the reason why no matter how big a fan they are, people like Lawrence Miles (for instance) will never truly understand what the show is about.

RTD era had The Parting of the Ways.

Mofftat has The Wedding of River Song.

It's a two way street.

Doctor Who isn't supposed to be high-brow sci-fi. It's supposed to be fun.

Why aren't you having fun?

I would argue that Turn Left, Midnight, and The Waters of Mars are all darker and more serious episodes than anything in Moffat's run.

Turn Left is especially brilliant in deconstructing the silliness of the show.

So I can watch this on Amazon but never watched the series before, what's considered the best season overall?

Should I just try to watch it from the 1st season, just seems like I would have a lot to catch up on.
