I am going to be all sorts of frustrated if I don't get a chance to watch this on Christmas. It's a packed day though.
At least its Christmas day for you, down here its Boxing Day early morning and the same day as The Hobbit 2 comes out, day is going to be packed for me.

I imagine this won't end up in any box set so I think I'll grab it solo.

In the UK at least they've already confirmed a "Matt Smith specials" box, which presumably will be Day of & Time of, plus things like the prom and stuff, out in January. Nothing from Worldwide on that, though.

I'm unaware of how good (or bad) the game is, but you can get the Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - Season 1 game for $1 in the Groupees Holiday Helpings bundle (minimum of 2 games, they have a suggested price but you can pay $1). It's not out on Steam yet but you'll get a key as soon as the game is released on the store.

It's not great. I haven't played the standalone episode they released after that (Gunpowder plot? Maybe I'm thinking of something else), but that one was supposed to be slightly better. Worth a dollar if you're really desperate for some Doctor Who gaming though (they're the best DW-games around, but that doesn't say much).

I still say Telltale should do something with the Doctor Who license. They're not perfect, but they're the best company around right now for something like that. A full 5-episode series of time and space-shenanigans, with the player controlling both the Doctor and his companion would be heavenly. Second season: an extra long season giving all 12 (13?) Doctors their own episode. Make. It. Happen. Telltale.

"like a Rutan, fleeing through an energy trench"

also, like the 6th Doctor part.

Thanks for posting it, love Strax and this was hilarious. Lol at Colin Baker part.

Wow, thought they were going to be bad like the loves and monsters creature but they actually look really cool and are a nice idea. I really like the Vastra one, and it was drawn by a 7 year old girl! :O Love the dinosaur feather part.
Also the kid that did Strax's one is a fan of Kill la Kill
QF1MHKe.gif

Im obviously joking, but would be cool for the kid lol

I had to look up what a lorgnette was. Bested by an 11 year old once again.

What I've always loved about these sorts of design competitions is how meticulously kids add detail. They actually put thought into utility which I appreciate in random sci-fi gadgets.
Yep, I remember when I was a little kid entering at a competition held by schools where you had to create a shoe from the future. Did a sports one with lots of detail (that remind me a lot of this drawings) that had 3 buttons that made the shoe have wheels, 2 little rockets to go faster and a floating thing lol I actually was one of the winners.

I read this and had this mental image of Smith/Capaldi yelling at Clara, then a little blurb that says "Clara will remember that."

Actually, if it had multiple endings where the Doctor's companion turned on him, that would be really amazing.

Okay so I managed to get a friend to watch Doctor Who with me and he actually liked it, I did not expect that.

I do need some advice on how we should continue now though. I started with making him watch The Eleventh Hour. Should I just continue now or should I make him go back to the Ninth Doctor? I really feel like the latter would be better if it works out, The Day of The Doctor especially wouldn't be nearly as exciting if you haven't watched the earlier stuff. I'm worried he wouldn't enjoy the Eccleston era however, especially Aliens of London/World War Three and The Long Game would be rough I think.

I suppose we could also continue watching series 5 to ensure he gets hooked and then make him go back? I really don't know.

"Kovarian will remember that... in this timeline"

I can imagine a version where you play as River through her timeline with a dedicated 'Spoilers' dialogue option.

In all honesty, as much as people hate River, she'd probably have some of the most interesting stories that don't need to be explicitly 'kid friendly'.

Telltale has described it as a "dream franchise" in the past, but that was before The Walking Dead blew up massive and won tons of awards, thus opening basically any American TV studio door for them. They could probably get Doctor Who as well, but it'd be a lot more hard work and probably a much more restrictive license than the other things they could do, and outside the UK doesn't really have the mass appeal something like TWD or GOT does, sadly. I think a Doctor Who Telltale game where you play as the companion would be great. Put the player in the shoes of an all-new companion, and have the 'season' be that companion's adventures with the Doctor, either with or without the current TV companion.

There's a weird thing where due to the way the BBC works and the license fee, Cardiff/BBCWW are encouraged to sign deals for things like games with UK studios, to keep the money in Britain. That's why The Eternity Clock (The PS3/Vita game that isn't great but is better than the adventure games & is a Doctor/River only adventure so is unique in that sense) was made by Supermassive Games (Guildford), Tag Games (Scotland) did the iOS game, Asylum Games (London) did the DS & Wii games, and the Adventure Games were done by Sumo (Sheffield) - they try to keep it in house. I am massively thankful the Adventure Games existed, though, as I got to go to the launch to cover it and got to sit in and drive around a Dalek for a few minutes for work!

Only one shitty iOS thing has been developed outside of the UK so far, and they did shop that concept to UK studios. Still, at least those Wii games gave birth to the Sonic Screwdriver Wii Remote.

That's the main barrier between Who and Telltale, I'd think, other than how busy that studio is now. Moffat's son is a gamer - he runs a youtube channel where he posts Minecraft and COD videos (of course) and I've been saying for ages somebody should send him a DL code for TWD and tell him to play it in front of his dad.

This sounds perfect. Telltale and Moffatt both love crushing fan hearts, it's a match made in heaven.

If we're going for UK studios only, they could at least pick decent ones. We have;

Revolution
Media Molecule
Rocksteady
Traveller's Tales
Sony (some)
Rockstar (some)

Not saying any of those would be ideal for a DW game, but still.

Of those, MM, Sony & Rockstar are obviously locked into IPs of their publishers for various reasons, and would never do Who. Rocksteady are owned 75% by Warner and 15% by Square Enix, so they've far more lucrative IP at their fingertips. TT is basically the Lego studio now (and though there's an argument for Lego Doctor Who, it again isn't 'big' enough on the international scale for Lego to do it.

I don't think a good studio alone is enough, though. Sumo are a great studio - they did Sonic & Sega All Stars Tennis/Racing/Racing Transformed, Outrun Online, Virtua Tennis, some work on LBP2/Vita, as well as some serviceable port work. Thing is the Adventure games had a development time and budget that just meant no matter what they did it was never going to stand up with the best stuff, sadly.

They couldn't pick one that's locked to a platform

There's also

who'd probably at least put a lot of effort into the cinematic sequences

I'd like to see a studio like Wadjet Eye Games get contracted for Doctor Who games. It wouldn't require a large budget at all and I think their graphic style would be charming for a Who game. Of course they're not a UK studio but you UK types have to share more Who love! Spread it out! ;p

My friends bought me that sonic Wii remote a couple years back. It's cool but impossible to hold sideways comfortably.

A friend of mine accidentally saw a spoiler somewhere the other day too. Hopefully she's not spoiled on anything else as we'll be watching the episode together. Smith was our first Doctor so it will be cool/sad.

After the BBC America trailer I'm done with media, no more pics and videos until the special. I'm glad Who-GAF is good about tagging spoilers, I managed to go pretty much blind into DotD and I hope I'll be able to do the same with TotD.

dammit, I just read a huge spoiler and now I'm mad at myself for it lol

Any links?

Ugh, why release them on Bluray then.....

The previous DVDs are notoriously bad with significant artifacting, especially early on.

They may not have been produced in HD, but at least the new blurays arent making things even worse like the DVDs did. It's the best quality youll see them in.

That's why I got them.

It also gets better in later seasons. Series 1 looks the worse because it looks like they had some vaseline on the lens to create a soft glowy style that has been popular in the past.

Kinda off topic but I just watched the "Human Nature" 2-parter for the first time. About me ignoring this show for so long I only have one thing to say: I've made a huge mistake. I'm glad at least I've finally seen the light.

I'm obviously not going to catch up with the show by xmas day, but holy shit, I don't mind.

Cute little video interview with Orla Brady about the episode.

She seems adorable. Kinda hope she comes back, purely because she's a fantastic actress. Gonna be really weird seeing her in the episode while I work my way through Fringe at the moment.

She said character development moments for her were cut due to time elsewhere, but I hope they either make it in on the DVD or get worked into a subsequent appearance, maybe. She's a very lovely actress, one of British TV's underrated actors, I think.

Most definitely. Have you ever watched Fringe? It's kinda what I always wanted Torchwood to be.

I have, yeah. Fringe is definitely closer to my personal ideal of what Torchwood should be (in a sense, anyway), but I personally don't think Fringe at its best comes close to Torchwood when it really does things right. That's rare, but all of Children of Earth and the arc of Owen being a 'living dead man' come to mind as really quite brilliant bits of sci-fi. It's just for everything like that there's a Cyberwoman and the like.

With a small amount of tweaking Fringe could have fit right in with the Doctor Who universe. The alternate universe was very, very similar to the one that we saw in Doctor Who Season 2. The alt universe on both shows had a slight technological advantage on the regular universe. They both used airships as well.

I'm sure there is some crazed FanFic writer out there that linked Walter Bishop to the cracks in the universe as well.

Fringe is absolutely what Torchwood should have been. I guess my expectations were too high. I expected Torchwood to be something similar to Warren Ellis' Planetary.

Speaking of tangentially related TV shows, I've been watching the Thick of It. What a great show that is. I really hope that I don't now exclusively associate Capaldi with Malcolm Tucker and don't just expect him to yell at everyone as the Doctor though.

Also, really excited for a Moffat come-at-me-bro Doctor speech as performed by Capaldi.

I despise Children of Earth. The cheap, forced feels by introducing a character we've never heard of insults me as a viewer.

On a happier note, SFDebris is doing a Doctor Who double feature this week. Reviewing "Day of the Doctor" on Monday, and changing up his usual "Worst episode of A Star Trek Series" Christmas theme to the worst serial of Doctor Who, and he has chosen "The Twin Dilemma"
