Avalanche: "Microtransactions and subscriptions will be the next-gen of games"

I'd be really curious to find out how many cash cards R* has sold for GTAO... because $1mil was $19.95 and you can blow that in a heartbeat.

All of my friends that play (and I still do) completely balked at the idea of buying in game money when we saw what R* did to make everything about the process of making money a terrible grind.

People already forget about expansion packs, didn't they?

I know, I'm age dating myself. Oh well.

I suppose this is the part where I start rambling about the "good 'ol days" and how X year period was the "best time" of my life in gaming etc.

Yeah, well according to Gartner research Video Game Console hardware and software will be a $44bn market in 2013, Handheld $18bn of a total $93bn worldwide market. Mobile with all its shady F2P business models and overcrowded stores comes in at $13.2bn.

If you decide that you can't compete in a market where every consumer is a "whale" (a term which I find despicable) , then go ahead and compete for scraps with the rest of the F2P trash. Most F2P games are failures that make nothing. You had better make something good because if you don't, then you're done. Good luck finding funding to make the next one.

Sega channel for real this time.

its the future. Streaming games that change periodically directly to your tv that still plays movies and shows. Just sub for the DirectStation Plus package or Microcast Gold and you're good to go.

At least that's one way I could see F2P happening down the road.

Most retail games don't sell 15 million copies but that doesn't stop triple A pubs and devs going huge with their budgets and expectations, swinging for the fences and trying to snag the Call of Duty crowd.

I don't know if this industry pays attention to the norm, the gaze always seems to be firmly locked on the exceptions.

This is why I am glad indies games exist; that way, I can go into this current gen knowing there will always be a way out of garbage trends like this.

Games need to be games; not ways to milk customers out of their hard-earned money.

Ehm.

FUT is not a broken system. Its also seperate of the main game.

The card system is super broken.

I'll concede that its separate from the main game, but things like roster update subs do affect the main game.

FIFA is basically Microtransactions The Game.

You're going to like it damn it.

Because "Deal With It" worked so very well the last time.

Well, thank god for Indies. They don't gouge money out of consumers via microtransactions. They just offer a quality product which has a above average level of re-playability compared to AAA games.

Let them be stupid in continuing this unsustainable, broken ass model. I'll continue to laugh at them as they'll fail even more trying to do so while it starts affecting their profit margins.

Exactly why I'm going with most indie games & Japanese 3rd party titles next gen.

Just like last gen, I won't buy any $60 title unless they either come out as GOTY Editions, Ultimate Editions, etc., or if they have them as part of the "Greatest Hits" lineups.

If games are going to be free to download and play with microtranscations that's one thing, but I'm not paying full price for a title to then get nickled and dimed.

But what about the poor starving developers? They made this content so they're entitled to get paid for it right guys?

We were going to kill the used game market to help these wonderful folks out! Remember GAF?!! They're our friends!

Meanwhile contracts for Kiefer Sutherland as VA and Eminem for the OST are signed.

Lol at people saying they will just avoid mad max.

What this guy said is on the minds of every single publisher. Have fun paying for this crap.

The most egregious offender is Microsoft: Forza 5, crimson dragon, Killer Instinct, Ryse: Son of Rome, and dead rising all have elements of F2P game design in full priced games.

Yeah PS4 looks like it's avoided the brunt. But I'm worried Sony's big games might follow suit ...

Please don't Sony ... please ...

What is an acceptable level of transactions for people?

Pay $X for in game currency to shorten the in-game grind?
Pay $X for a thing that gives you only a cosmetic change (hat, gun skin)?
Pay $X to buy a thing that gives you an online advantage (gun, FIFA/NHL card packs)?
Pay $X to buy a new level?
Pay $X for the video to show you how to solve a level?
Pay $X to have the level cleared in game?

I say yes for the cosmetic changes, because those don't actually block you from anything. Anything else is no-no-no :(.

I dont think Avalanche has had one thing to say about next gen machines that has made me look favorably upon them. Welp, looks like I will be skipping a 3rd generation in a row.

So glad I've decided to skip next gen. It just keeps getting more and more greedy.

Have fun guys.

gog.com has a lot of good games that don't require any of this stuff, just saying.

If this truly the case, as it seems to be, then I think I'm going to be doing a lot more movie watching, reading, and studying up on foreign languages. :D Video games are an addiction of mine, but I know the difference between desiring something and needing it. Video gamers need to show publishers who push these anti-consumerist, price gouging, rip off behaviors how truly unessential they really are. I don't want my hobby to become what the mobile market is all about', but it may be unavoidable. I don't have to partake in it, though.

I'm really glad used games weren't messed with. I can only imagine how these bastards planned on exploiting no trade ins.

Now instead of people getting stuck with shitty free to pay games they can just return it to Gamestop when they get bored for something that values their time.

It's the main reason I will be renting next gen, what with this and the prices in the UK I can see it turning a lot of people away from gaming.

Board games are fun, so are geocaching, reading books, drawing, building models, hobbies abound that don't gouge you at every turn.

I'll always have my gaming memories and I still post on GAF but I'm not into this industry like I used to be.

Chose another gen to play
Because of the future you can't micro-transactions are required to use next-gen on your game

Seriously now, Nintendo is safe. The publishers who do this kind of shit don't even care about Nintendo anymore. And Nintendo themselves would not do this. Sadly people would rather put up with this instead of going Nintendo :/

The card system is super broken.

Oh come on, ive played a dozen games this weekend with a mate and thete was nothing broken about it.

It's pretty hard to make a Free 2 Play game that traditionalists would appreciate like Dota or World of Warcraft for subscription style games.

The percentage of games that are good without these business models are most likely higher than the percentage of those with them.

Not all microtransactions are created equally.

For a $60 game you should get everything unlocked and able to use from Day 1. A F2P game when handled right is fantastic, take Warframe. What Microsoft is doing right now is just disgraceful.

Subscriptions for MMO's, I have no problem with. You know what you're getting yourself into before paying the $15 a month.

$60 games with micro transactions don't sit well with me, and a dev can tell me it's the future, but that doesn't mean I have to accept their interpretation. The beauty of course is that I don't have to buy their games. If a dev or pub wants to abuse me as a customer, I'll walk away. It was a defining factor in my choice of a PS4 over an Xbox, and doing it for a single game will be far easier than that decision. I'll keep voting with my dollars, so do what you want to do at your own peril game devs.

Is there anyone here who bought an Xbone and passed on Forza solely due to microtransactions?

I must be getting old, in my day we could cheat in single player games for free. Magazines would even dedicate pages to detailing various cheat codes for all sorts of scenarios. Now they expect you to pay for them!

Video games, they grow up so fast...

Punish your customer base because they insist on being able to trade used goods.

As gamers and consumers we have no other course of action than to reciprocate this blatant show of contempt by simply not playing their games.

Thank fuck for games like Project Eternity and Witcher 3. Premium games with microtransactions can go fuck themselves.

Why in the world would you boycott the game over a feature that will never affect you?

The gaming community gets up in arms over additional options and wonders why the industry is trying to move away from them.

Pretty funny quote from the Bravely Default thread.
