PAL Charts - Week 47, 2013

Killzone games keep getting made because SCEE top management refuse admit they made a mistake by purchasing GG for a fuckton of cash and then pumping even more money into them to make a "Halo killer".

Once they climbdown happens GG is not going to be around, at least not how it is right now. They will send in someone from SCE UK to fix it up.

Technically incompetent after having been bailed out for Killzone on PS3 and creatively lacking. Just poor all around.

I say this as a very, very disappointed Killzone fan. The only good one has been Mercenary, which was developed by SCE Cambridge. If they take over the franchise, it might actually be good. However, I would prefer them to work on their own games from now on.

Wow, quite the post. I agree with you though and always wondered about the Killzone franchise. Wonderful, deep universe with lowest denominator games imo.

I will keep in mind that Tearaway's prize in PSN Europe is much cheaper than retail. I saw on the swedish PSN that over 1000 people already has rated this game (which is only allowed if you purchased the digital version), which is very rare, compared to Killzone Mercenary - to this day, only 765 people has rated the game (and Killzone was released 4 Sep 2013).

(Yeah, it doesn't say much but I think MM sell some copies through PSN).

EDIT: Im still sad the retail version isn't on top 15 :(
I think the rating for Tearaway also includes those who have downloaded the demo. But yeah, the PSN price is indeed much cheaper. The PSN price is like 191SEK i think? While on for example CDON.se, a retail copy of Tearaway cost 299SEK.

You're agreeing with me right? Or are you saying the charts support his hypothesis?
He was talking about how important 3rd party support is in general, seeing how Xbox One has nearly outsold the WiiU already (if those reports are accurate).

i dont geddit.. tearaway has already bombed according to some, while its been on sale since the 22th... thats 3 days now.. amongst the xboner launch ??

It's 38th on the chart. It'll be lucky if it sold more than 1500 units. That's pretty bombtacular.

Still, it was always going to be this way. It's a creative new IP on the Vita released at the worst possible time.

Tearaway is on the wrong handheld for the audience it was going for, this is the reality(I know it was a 1st party studio).

Eh. Would it sell better on 3DS, assuming a larger marketing campaign and that 3DS could somehow run the game? Sure.

Would it sell that much better on 3DS? I doubt it. The dedicated handheld market doesn't seem very hospitable to new IP right now.

Guys, is it just me or Guardian is lazy with their shares in THE WORST WEEK POSSIBLE FOR BEING LAZY?!? Where are they?!? They should update today, right?

Maybe there's no shares this week...

They've occasionally skipped a week iirc. I wonder if Gfk knows places like GAF use it and mathemagic to deduce the sales of some titles.

It doesn't look good. They're normally up by midday. It wouldn't be the first time they've skipped a week unfortunately.

Sonic is Sonic. It doesn't matter if they don't market it that much (and they market it a lot), it does have it's fans.

Tearaway was a fucking great game, without any marketing behind it. Of course it would bomba, even with a great price.

And there's no way it'll come out in other platforms. People need to deal with it.
Dunno where this is coming from. I've seen ads for print, online and television. It's just false.

No, they can't! This week, they can't absolutely forget to post them. I'd be angry as hell if such a thing happened. It's one of the most interesting weeks in ages, how could they even think of not releasing the shares with a brand new console just released. It'd be asinine.

I was about to ask why PS4 software was barely in the list but then I remembered the console still has to come out this Friday.

Can anyone summon jvm? I suppose he's the only one who could contact Guardian Tech and get an answer to the following question: Where are the shares?!?

EDIT: In order to give to make this post more useful...when judging last places in charts, everyone should remember that numbers are higher than usual, since we're into Holidays. Even more with a big launch included.

Keep your hate flowing towards GG. They are one of the best studios Sony have period. And regardless how much you want Sony to close, Sony won´t because Killzone makes money, unlike plenty of games that Sony publishes.

That's a really shitty chart position for Zelda. Fuck.
I can understand Nintendo's thinking about releasing their flagship titles against the others, it's because they're catering to their customers not worrying about MS and Sony's...

...but they need to realize there's an overlap between their customers and MS/Sony, and that overlap is being bombarded from every angle about NEXT GEN! NEXT GEN! GABBO! GABBO! NEXT GEN! and it's hard to fight that.
Zelda should have released a week earlier and Mario kept for the week after PS4.

When I bought Zelda on Friday at lunch time, the clerks at GAME hadn't even opened the bloody delivery box yet coz they'd been so busy with XBONE customers. >:(

...But that's not a shitty chart position at all, especially considering how top 10 numbers are certainly way higher than usual due to many launch games charting.

The thing about this drivel you just spewed is that Sony has never been afraid to close a studio. Zipper, Team Soho, Pysgnosis, Incognito, bigbig all had the plug pulled on them. Not sure how Guerilla would be any different.

#8 on the UK chart is awrful, anything outside the top #5 probably didn't sell more than a few thousand copies.

ND, SSM, Evos, SP, PD, Mm and Cambridge are better than GG. Japan Studio is in a state of complete disrepair and London is a shell of what it used to be.

GG have not made a successful game commercially or critically since the original Killzone. Without the immense hype of Killzone 2 it would not have scored what it did. It was a poor game from beginning to end. The story was horrible (I mean seriously, the player was fighting for the wrong side being the invading bastards), technically they got a lot of outside help from Cambridge and London via the ATG, and the gameplay was just all over the place because shooting/actions were at the end of the graphical chain and it introduced a shit ton of latency.

GG, as they are, are not a good developer. They have potential to put out some good games, but they need to be seriously restructured in order to do so. Killzone SF looks like more of the same boring gameplay just dressed up in pretty graphics, but this time with a wallhack assist.

I'm interested to see what they do once Killzone is dead, but I'm not going to buy into any future hype.

The difference is the money involved and all of the personal stakes at SCEE. None of the developers you mention were particularly expensive to purchase and neither did they burn through cash at the same rate. The management team still feel they can get some ROI out of GG. I don't think that is the case any longer.

Also, Team Soho and Camden Studio merged to make SCE London. SCE London is bigger now than those two were separately, though they work on stuff like Home, Singstar and Wonderbook. :/

If your insinuating Nintendo rehash and make cheap shitty games then lol.

No I'm saying Nintendo needs those rehashed and shitty 3rd party games, just look at the top ten.

As nice as it would be to say "Fuck COD" and "Fuck EA" they are a necessary evil to get folks to buy the system to accompany 1st party, I reckon it's the reason why the Wii U is currently tracking below the GameCube.

So would I tbh.

It's so pretty - plus I a played a bit of it at a recent launch event and it didn't seem too bad.

Yeah I think the reason it got mediocre reviews is because it's basically just combat for the entire game, and the combat is the same more or less from start to finish.
Still looks fun to me.

yes such a beautiful game to show your newly bought console. I would just buy ryse to show it to my friends and family

This as well, game looks incredible.

Not a surprise it charted I think.

Something I didn't notice earlier, but Assassin's Creed IV for Xbox One doesn't seem to have had such a good debut. It's lower than FIFA 14 for PS4, despite PS4 coming out in the next days. On the contrary, ACIV for PS4, given the circumstances, seems to have had a good debut.

Last year

08 (__) PS3 Need For Speed Most Wanted (Electronic Arts)
09 (__) PS3 Wwe '13 (Thq)
10 (__) 360 Need For Speed Most Wanted (Electronic Arts)

This year

36 (34) PS4 CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS (ACTIVISION BLIZZARD)
37 (NE) XBO NEED FOR SPEED: RIVALS (ELECTRONIC ARTS)
38 (NE) PSV TEARAWAY (SONY COMPUTER ENT.)
39 (30) 360 DISNEY INFINITY (DISNEY INTERACTIVE STUDIOS)
40 (NE) 360 NEED FOR SPEED: RIVALS (ELECTRONIC ARTS)

Xbox One launch is definitely a factor, but there's still a big drop compared to last year.
Hopefully, PS4 SKU should do quite better.

That makes Killzone 2 critical succes

Killzone 2 is one of the best published games on the PS3. It´s easily top 5 PS3 exclusives this gen. Each of Killzone 2 and 3 sold between 2-3 million which make them profitable, which make Killzone a commercial success. You are hating on GG because you don´t like the games. Everything you said is wrong. I have seen you making the same statement. You don´t like Killzone, that does not make Killzone bad by any stretch of the imagination. Sony closed 3 studios in 2012, if GG is not making profit, Yoshida would have closed the studio. GG´s existence and Killzone´s existence are both success whether you like it or not.

Interesting that there's not a huge difference in chart position between ACIV XO and PS4.

It's a shame there's no Guardian splits to see how close they were and some indication of XO software sales.

3 PS4 games in the Top 40 for a system not even out yet is kinda weird to see. Poor WiiU can't even muster 1 right now. Be interesting to see how Mario fares next week though. Should do well hopefully.

These are only bundled with the Day 1 editions right?

Yep.
Given we don't have shares from Guardian, the only thing we can do for now are...estimates which are far more similar to guesses.
Let's look at how FIFA trended from Week 46 to 47, in the last three years

2010

EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (+76%) and Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (+24%) hold their positions at No4 and No5 respectively, overtaking EA’s racing title ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+2%) which has slipped down the grid to No6.

2011

‘FIFA 11’ (+22%) and ‘Just Dance 3’ (+22%) are the only Top 10 titles to increase sales this week with EA’s Christmas football favourite a non-mover at No5 and Ubisoft’s popular dancing sequel up 2 places to No8.

2012

There is no change at No3 and No4 as sales of both ‘FIFA 13’ (+2%) and ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ (-0%) remain reasonably static.

Now, this year we have a 328% increase due to Xbox One's debut, but I'm just talking about the other SKUs, here. Week 46 --> Week 47 trend has always been characterized by an increase, although 2010 was the year with the biggest one, and last year when it was almost absent: probably, FIFA having bigger and bigger debuts / following weeks influenced this trend. Having both PS4 and One SKUs releasing this week probably influenced other SKUs release, thus I'd estimate a steady trend, with no growth at all (probably, it's a little lower than last week). Thus, I estimate 23-24k for FIFA 14 on 360 and 12-13k for FIFA 14 on PS3, since this is how the game fared on both consoles during last week.

I repeat: this is just an estimate / guess.

Another question: what were the One SKUs available at launch? Was it something like
Forza Motorsport 5 Day One Edition Pack
FIFA 14 Day One Edition Pack
Normal Pack
Asking because some of the numbers we know could lead to knowing maximum / minimum limits for Forza and FIFA 14 on One.

Why would Sony close guerilla now? Aren't they working on a new IP thats supposed to be some sort of action RPG?

Again, I was referring to Puppeteer, not Tearaway.

Sorry, misunderstood your comment. Although I fully agree; Puppeteer would probably have enjoyed being one of the highest-rated PS4 games, and it would have got a lot more attention if it'd been on a next-gen console. Doesn't seem like the kind of game which would have been too hard to get working with better textures and higher framerate on a new console.

Yes. We'll see if the new direction helps them. I remain sceptical though.

I was really hopeful for Shadow Fall and while it seems 'decent', I wonder if it's time for Sony to let go of the Killzone franchise. It's an amazing technical showcase (as most of the series has been), but there's too much taint and baggage to go with it. Guerrilla should take their technical expertise, hire a new group of writers and level designers and take their lessons learnt to apply to a new FPS franchise.

Killzone 2 was received so well that they had to change the entire gaming by patching the controls because of all the backlash. There is a reason killzone hasn't really grown as a franchise and it isn't the lack of marketing behind it.

I don't see how selling 2-3 million could be considered much of a success either. This is a AAA 1st party FPS that received a huge amount of marketing from Sony. This in the gen where FPS blew up into the biggest genre in console gaming by far. Anything less than 2-3 million would have been terrible. Surely they would be hoping for more from one of their premier studios.
