VITA NEW MODEL Announced with built in 1GB memory!!

I love my OG Vita, Dat OLED! so I will not be jumping on the 2000 series.

What I REALLY need is a US release date on the 64 GB Memory Card, my Vita woke up this morning demanding it. Again Sony, Price really does not matter (though less than $100 would be appreciated)

My guess is that the US price will be be $100, since the Japanese Price is 10,000 yen, and the 32 GB moved to $80.

They still release games on Game Cards.

I would like 4 GB for the internal flash memory, but at least this will take care of people buying physical copies of their games, small PSN games (PS Mobile games, some PSOne games, and maybe some PSP games).

Why would IPS displays uses less, while it still requires backlighting? And I doubt Sony is gonna put a IPS display on this Vita. They don't even use IPS for their current flagship phone, the Xperia Z. They only start to use it with the Z1, which is still not released.
I hope i'm wrong though and it's indeed using a IPS, but strange they wouldn't announce it.

Because the screen looks phenomenal on the OG Vita. It's a stunner. Gobsmacking. Jaw dropping. Fucking gorgeous.

That said, they needed to switch to LCD to help cut costs going forward. This move was pretty much inevitable. As long as they pick a decent LCD, it's not the end of the world.
 
My biggest fear was that a Vita revision would have featured more buttons/a different configuration intended to create more parity with the DualShock4 for remote play, so this is a relief.

I bought my Vita basically as a remote play machine a month or so ago, so I've been using it mostly for web browsing. Ever since learning of the burn-in problem, I've been paranoid as hell about that static menu bar. I suppose if that terrible day ever comes I'll pick up one of the new models.
 
Pretty much the only major improvement I see are the bigger buttons for PS, Start, and Select. The original Vita was really spot-on with its design.
 
Shaking my head at all the OLED over-hype in this thread. I'm totally going to keep my OLED Vita until they're all sold out, then sell it at a ridiculous price to one of you suckers* and replace it with one of the new models.


*after I've made sure that the LCD screen on the new model is decent, of course

Lots of useful improvements here, like more space for your hands on the back, better battery life, inbuilt memory, matter back, thinner and ligher body, bigger Start/Select buttons etc. Screen being LCD is a little disappointing though. I think I'll stick with my OG model for now but
 
ITT OLED is being overrated.

Sony used a screen similar to the super amoled plus found in the galaxy s2 based on the sub pixel arrangement.

The oled screen offers deeper blacks, but less accurate colors that appear over saturated and less accurate than IPS LCD screens. Oled also appears less bright in direct sunlight. The blue color on oled screens also have a much much lower life than the red or green colors.

High quality LCD screens are just as good as oled screens. If oled were the clear cut best screen, you'd see them in all high end smart phones, but this is not the case at all.

What's strange about a likely far cheaper to produce unit?

If you want the OLED premium get one quick because this is clearly a cost cutting move to push for more mainstream pricing in the near future.

I'll take this path over never having an OLED version released period and them going with lower cost LCDs from day one. You can't expect them to keep supporting a premium priced screen when trying to get into sub-$200 pricing.

Save files mostly top out in the 70-100MB range with some games well below in the 5-10MB range. The biggest patch I could find size #'s for quickly was WipEout 2048's patch (which adds a ton of content and massive performance improvements) which was ~140MB. So 1GB would let you have a half dozen games with full patches before needing to even consider clearing off space. You could pretty easily get by playing only retail games with 1GB of internal storage.
 
It's worth remembering that this hasn't even been confirmed for the west yet (nor the Vita TV), and Sony have even said they are not sure if it ever will be.

Erm....no. This is their current flagship smartphone, Xperia Z, while every other phone is either using OLED or IPS displays. Even cheap Chinese phones are using fullHD IPS screens.

But they are gonna use IPS screens with their next phone, Z1.

An OLED screen isn't going to look better than a good IPS LCD so as long as they didn't cheap the hell out on it, it doesn't matter. Too much market speak.

Although this fails to address any of Vita's actual hardware problems.

The issue here is whether they use a high quality LCD panel, and seeing as they are trying to save on manufacturing costs...unlikely.

I was under the impression that xperia z screen is great except for the viewing angle

Yeah no SD card slot. The on board memory is nice but not enough for game saves and patches.

Maybe already answered, but you need a memorycard for most Vita games to make a savegame. Only a few allows for savegames to be saved directly to the game cart itself. But yeah, the 1GB stuff can be used to other stuff too, but at least it fixes the "must have a memory card to save" problem. It doesnt fully solve the problem needed for patching though, since some patches are fairly big.

It's not clear cut, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. And OLED are expensive to produce than LCD screens. Why do you think their are already IPS TVs and monitors for years for low prices and not a single OLED TV yet.
 
The biggest selling point for me is USB charging. Hate looking for that Vita charger.

I wonder if there will be people willing to swap my OLED Vita into one of these...?
 
If OLED is really dead, than I wonder if Sony has had a hard time getting costs down on the device through economies of scale (though VITA sales haven't helped with that scaling either).

Still, did I read right that this VITA is NOT cheaper? Than I really wonder if OLED screens are still cost prohibitive for Sony at this time.

They don't truly know. They just think it's better and assume it's better than all LCD screens, but it's not.

Better blacks but over saturated colors that aren't as accurate as IPS. Screen not as bright as lcd especially outdoors on a sunny day.

You'd think oled would be featured on more than just Samsung phones if our truly was superior, but LG, HTC, apple, Nokia, Sony stick to using super IPS LCD screens.

to give VitaTV some breathing room probably, you're gonna need VitaTV + mem card to properly use it, so the value package is already $150. not much difference with Vita already

Good point. With the way the Vita has performed outside of Japan, does it make sense for Sony to release it in other countries? I doubt this new model will galvanize consumers to go out and purchase one. It's all about the games.
 
I'll make a judgment once the comparison videos come out between the OLED and LCD Vitas

Both have their advantages, but oled is still not suitable for TVs on a mass production scale. The yields are shit. High cost to make.

uh, how are you going to play Vita games at those angles? If anything wont have any problems with washed out LCD due to angle, it is game console. You are going to be holding it in your hands and looking at it directly in any case or else you wont be able to control it properly.

i would like them to use same kind of display just for fun when people complain about washed out screen at some angle that nobody will ever be able to use it anyway.

That's a major improvement. Much better than this "Dat OLED" bullshit. Seriously, I know it's a good screen, but I know that it does have it's problems, specially in long term.
 
Today was a strange day. Vita needs games but it gets a settop box and a version without an OLED.
Which is fine but it should be cheaper

How I see it is, they'd need to drop the price in the west for this to be successful. I really don't know anyone who owns a Vita, but they all own a 3DS. Sure there's probably other factors too but the market is tougher for the Vita there.
