iOS Gaming July 2013: Filled with unethical beverages, like Lipton Brisk Iced Tea

psa seems like Deus Ex gets wonky if are on jb devices (make sure to get that tweak on cydia that fakes it so your device isn't jb, xcon), and even though it supports ipad mini, for some reason ipad 2 isn't supported o_O

TA forum folks mention it works on latest ios 7 beta.

Are the SOCs exactly the same between ipad 2/mini? I know it's commonly said that they are, but maybe there's some minor variation in clock speed or something else very small. I've done zero research on this, so just theorizing. There must be a good technical reason for not having ipad 2 support.

especially since by all accoutns the iPad 3 is less powerful than the two when you factor in the screen.

I doubt I was going to play Deus Ex anyway since it looked like a budget version of the console game, but it's still a weird move.

Man, I'm interested in Deus Ex but I have yet to successfully engage myself in a single iPad/iPhone game that wasn't a simple platformer or pick up and play title. For some reason I just can't seem to do it and I have no idea why.

I can never seem to sit down and play a tablet game for more than, say, 5-10 minutes.

Just played the first little bit of Deus Ex on the iPhone 4S. Compared to other "supports the 4S barely" games, this one runs really well on the 4S; smoothly and fully playable. Some of the text is a touch small, but it runs way better than, say, XCOM.

Great!!!
By the way, I'm really digging the music, congratulations.

You should post on TA too...there is thread where I left some impressions but it's easy to miss....I'm sure if a dev posts there too you can 'make some noise'....the game is really good and you will surely benefit from a larger player base playing.

If someone wants to play a game, my GC is Pitta (please specify from NeoGAF)....I can play at lunch/evenings European time pretty consistently.

Thanks, much appreciated! :)
Yeah, we noticed the thread on TA, gonna post there later on.

Next addition is probably Deus Ex and Swords & Arrows(?) - the latter really isn't my kind of game so let me know what you guys think (no pressure Kiriku :p, heja sveeeerige).

That would be awesome (and yes, representing Sweden :p)!

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
How is Deus Ex for someone who never played the game before? Good port? Easy to get into? How does it run on ipad mini?

its not a port. Kinda spinoff that doesn't have the budget so, probably not as good.

You should definitely check out the console version, especially when the rebalanced boss update thing is out soon.

10 hours into Orc and it's still fucking awesome. Haters gonna hate, it's not slow, it's perfectly paced on Warchief difficulty because you need to abuse the crap out of hit'n'run tactics.

Love it!

Apparently Deus EX runs fine on iPad 2 (jailbreak shenanigans helps installing). If true, this and the fact that Pacific Rift also doesn't support iPad 2 makes me wonder if Apple isn't trying to phase out the iPad 2 by making some developers hold support for the device.

edit: apparently not. From TA's comment section:

"Thanks very much for your interest in the game folks. Just to confirm we will be adding in iPad2 support in just a matter of weeks. It won't be long! (James from Square Enix)"

Hmm, Pocket Gamer has posted a review of Deus Ex. Overall they seemed to like the game, but when they mention the game can be frustrating with difficulty spikes and "clumsy" controls I'm not sure I'd enjoy it despite loving DE:HR. I wish there was a demo I could try.

Well the console game wasn't lacking on difficulty spikes either lol.

Added Deus Ex to the OP, along with the very brief introductory impressions we got so far. I have a feeling it's going to be competent with some 'clumsyness', which I guess comes with the territory of being a FPS/TPS kinda game.

I'll personally dive into it once the temperature where I live have cooled down a bit from it's current 32 degrees C. This is no gaming temperature. ^^

Someone summarize Swords & Arrows in a few sentences for the forthcoming OP addition pls!

Oh and tomorrow.. Walking Dead: 400 Days and Tiny Thief.. the iOS snowball keeps on rollin'.

Another oh, the Pacific Rim tie-in game looks pretty cool too, anyone tried it? Screens makes it look like Infinity Blade-esque gameplay is to be expected?

True, but I never really felt frustrated. Maybe annoyed:)
Eurogamer gave it a pretty middling review, though they didn't mention anything about difficulty spikes or clumsy controls:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-08-deus-ex-the-fall-review
I wonder if the reviewer feels the same as I do with virtual controls. They work, but I just generally don't have much fun playing that way.

Looks like a pass for now. There's too much else to play (and in my backlog). For starters it looks like Ravenmark Mercenaries is now out in the US...

Ooh, Swords & Arrows! Great to see more people flying the turn-based strategy flag high. :D

Speaking of TBS games... Ravenmark: Mercenaries has hit the App Store worldwide! EDIT: I see bonesquad beat me to the punch, heh

Go grab a Commander name of your choice while we're still in the early days. Would love to get into some head-to-head battles with other Gaffers!

In line with the health benefits of extremely unethical beverages, Mercenaries is free to play with IAPs. But... please trust me when I say that we've done our best to balance the game and steer it far away from paywall or pay-to-win shenanigans. You don't have to spend a cent to enjoy the game and defeat other players as long as you have the tactical wit to overcome them.

If you decide to spend money, it'll be to pick up new brigades to change up your style of play - much along the lines of League of Legends. (You can also grind within the game to earn silver and grab the same brigades.) We're not very interested in heckling you to give us money if you don't want to.

For the Game of Thrones fans, you'll have a rad time customizing a banner to outshine the high lords of Westeros. Heh.

No iPad 2 support for Deus EX: The Fall. That's weird considering it supports iPad Mini.

Oh well, guess it's time to upgrade.

Honestly though, the iPad 2 is like the longest supported electronic deviced I've bought in a long ass time.

It was worth every penny.

TWD: 400 days supposedly drops today, yes? Still don't understand how it's being released for iOS. Is it a standalone, or do you have to have the original game reinstalled? My 16gb mini can't take the releases of Xcom, Limbo, Deus Ex, lesabel, Frozen Synapse, and now TWD: 400 days

Ok if you are even remotely interested in Deus Ex, I highly recommend The Fall. This is a proper title with great production values for an iOS game. It's not a poor knockoff like the mass effect infiltrator.

I played it on the ipad 4. The menu is beautiful, better than HR's menu even. I've had no framerate issues so far. And the game runs at full 2048x1536 with some form of AA implementation. I did not see any jaggies. The models and animation are a step down from HR, but the image quality is beautiful.

The game is fully voice acted. The quality of VA varies depending on the actor, but overall it's not bad.

And finally, the controls are surprisingly very responsive. They don't feel floaty at all. And you're not restricted to tiny dual sticks, as you can touch and drag anywhere (left half for movement, right for camera). Alternatively, you can double tap on the ground to move.

Was so scared that this would be shit like ME: Infiltrator. Very reassuring.

It's out 11th, and from what I hear the original TWD app will be updated to add the new episode as an IAP.

If devs are gonna drop ipad 2 they better not drop the mini :/

iPad 2 support for Deus Ex is coming soon™ as per the devs comments.

I could do it of course, but... I don't want to turn into some kind of marketing machine in here. :p

^^ added it to the OP with some impressions dug out of the thread so far. :) Do you guys have a launch promo trailer or similar out? Couldn't find any so I used a gameplay video from TouchGameplay for now.

In summary, new OP additions (cropped out impressions and such so safe space here):

((Waiting on Ravenmark Mercs impressions, I know Pitta has given some in the past but I can't find them at the moment(!)))

English is not my language but I'll try...

Swords&Arrows is a damn polished async medieval tbs warfare game.
I'm having a blast playing it, even if the games I'm in are a bit slow right BECAUSE OF PEOPLE DO NOT TAKING THEIR TURNS (HINT HINT HINT). :p
Seriously, it's like a medieval version of Uniwar...combining the same accessibility with a more complex system (like different terrain modifiers and research trees), all in a super slick package with a nice graphical style.
Game is Universal and free with a single 'no ads' unlock (ads are not intrusive tough).
Notable: when on iPad you can play both on portrait and on landscape (like Carcassonne)...something I really appreciate.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-08-deus-ex-the-fall-review

I think it's bit unfair on a mobile game after all. Playing it I feel like they could've easily port Human Revolution to mobile devices. I don't know how about AI, it did seem slightly dumber but... it is a mobile title o_O And if you play stealthily this is not going to be an issue. Yes, level design might not be as good as the console game - for me it's too early to tell but I don't expect anything on the same level.

This game is going to get lots of slagging for what it's not rather than what it is. And it's a shame because it plays and looks like it shouldn't look or play on iOS.

The control IMO are flawless, and if there's anything that I can criticise is the awful writing and voice acting. The main guy has the same annoying, constipated voice like Adam Jensen had, but with English accent. I don't think the original game had good writing either but here it's much worse. Either way, I am really impressed, this is really setting a new standard in mobile gaming.

Snuggles

erotic butter maelstrom
Can you still punch random people in the face? That was probably my favorite thing about Human Revolution.

This sucks!

One of my favorite games, Monpla Smash/Smash Planet, is scheduled to shutdown by the end next month.

I lost track of the time I played this since last fall.

Seriously?

That's their piracy prevention method. It unfairly affects people who buy the game on jailbroken devices, but hey what can you do...

I've started adding games in the Update section that I feel deserve highlighting, poke me if there are others you guys spot. :)
