Will there be a $399 Xbone available at launch? (Kinect-less/subsidy/price cut, etc)

Since virtually anything is possible now, what are the chances of this happening? I personally think there will definitely be a $399 SKU out there by some means. How they make that happen is completely up in the air though....

I highly doubt it

Not that all devs are going to be packing their titles chalk full of kinect features, but the fact that devs are counting on it being there means its really, REALLY hard to take away

They'd have to make a firmware patch to make it so that Kinect isn't needed. I was under the assumption that you wouldn't be able to do anything without Kinect plugged in.

it was only a rumor by the thurcott(?) guy but there was the $299 subsidized model MS was thinking about but supposedly dropped it in favor of the $499 1 sku. Might've included Kinect still.

At best I think the only real options are 450 with a year of live( to add value) or a subsidized model. Neither seem likely especially at launch. If they're having production issues they'll be in short supply and there will be enough hardcore Xbox fans to sell out at 500. Next year maybe but still probably not.

A kinect free SKU would effectively gimp the console.

Why? Because resources are devoted to it, this cannot be undone. It would result in a waste of the power and OS assigned to run the kinect.

It will not happen. Please understand.

Kinect is part of the Xbox One design philosophy and heavily built into the OS

I think there will be no Xbox One without Kinect even though it might be technical possible

I don't think so.. as much as it may not be liked.. it is smart to make sure every box has a Kinect

And not sure what other corners they can cut

I hope they don't go Kinect-less. The only chance for more actual good Kinect games is if everyone that has the system has one.

Subsidized console, at best. $299 (3G/LTE?) model that costs you monthly.

In the long run, it will cost you way over $499, but thanks to great marketing people believe it's $100 cheaper than a PS4.

It's a bit like with the smartphones (in the United States). If you buy an iPhone 'for $199', there are a lot of people who believe the phone actually costs $199. In reality, it costs $649 - and you are paying for it every month, plus some profit, plus for your minutes/text/data.

Why would anyone pay the same price for 50% less powerful machine?

Without kinect it would have absolutely no special appeal and function.

I suppose it would be possible for MS to produce an API that diverts the resources away from kinect into standard, if they have not already done so.

But it would mean extra fucking around for any dev that didn't want to use a kinect, rather than extra for those that do.

I would still get the $499 Kinect version. I was never a big fan of it, but I feel like its a big part of the system design for Xbox One. Im willing to give it another go. Unless of course they sold the Kinect seperate for only $100, id skip at launch for games.

Subsidies, yes. Removal of Kinect - no. With the voice control and TV features Kinect is integral to the consoles identity. I'll be shocked if they mess with that.

I won't buy the One until a price drop or if they make a cheaper SKU without Kinect. And yes, I have seen TitanFall :p

On Jimmy Fallon they played COD without a kinect plugged in. Weird huh?

Maybe? Crazier things have happened. MS might blow our mind further and drop the price.

I am curious why so many people want MS to remove the Kinect camera. Did you all feel the same way about the Wii and WiiU? Would those consoles be better if Nintendo didn't have any motion controls for their games?

I am not fond of the higher price but I do understand that MS is at least trying to innovate by making sure that their camera accessory is with every box so that any game that uses the camera would not have any potential customers left out. The camera is just another way to try to immerse gamers into the games we play. Not all games will make use of the camera the same way. I highly doubt Halo or Gears will come out requiring camera controls only. Did you not see the Xbox One controller? Do you not think that the vast majority of games will use it? Outside of the price I don't see the issue.

If MS drops anything else from the Xbox One, it will basically be an Xbox 360 II (which is what most people seem to want)
