Xbox-Skeptics: What Are Looking For Tomorrow?

  1. Free online and improved Silver service with a shift from Gold towards something like PSN+
  2. Clear evidence of a shift away from timed exclusives (I hate the practice with a passion) to full 1st party exclusive focus
  3. Clear shift from shoving Kinect into stuff it shouldn't be and focusing on what it would be good for
  4. Broad and varied genre support rather than a focus on shooters

Thinking about it, I expect to remain neutral/negative about MS approach to gaming and the role of a console as I doubt I'll see any of the above.
 
Nothing. Pretty much there is nothing Microsoft can do to get me excited for the system. it's going to be features I won't use, Kinect, and shooters. The only bomb they can drop for me which I DON'T want under any circumstances is EA exclusivity (not gonna happen). Would be pissed if I have to buy this butt system to play FIFA.

Also, what does "core games" even mean anymore? You will get CoD, maybe Halo, maybe Gears. With this AM's news (Kojima's twitter), maybe MGS5. You're not going to get JRPGs, unless you count Dark Souls 2 as a JRPG (I personally don't).

The next Xbox will almost certainly be a mirror image of the current Xbox, with richer experiences made possible by vastly more powerful hardware. Same with the PS3 -> PS4, as was made evident by Sony's unveil.

Anyone expecting a sea change in strategy is fooling themselves.

I'm sorry that my wish list offends you.

It's fairly obvious that there is pretty much zero chance of at least 3/4 of the things I listed happening, but what's wrong with wishing? What I'm wishing for isn't unreasonable because the competition is already doing all those things. The only reason it won't happen is because it's the opposite of the trajectory the company has been on since 2010 and the kinect launch. Also, when you say that "it will be a mirror image of the current xbox" - In my mind there are two versions of the current xbox. The 2005-2010 version (great) and the 2010-present version (post-kinect, not so great).

I predicted months ago that MS will have a stronger system. I still think that. I also think they will pay huge money for 3rd party exclusives.
 
I want Microsoft to blow me away and announce a great gaming console with a focus on games as a priority. the first years of Xbox360 style.

investment into first party studios, no more buying their way out of a poor first party offering, more incentives for being a Gold subscriber, rewards that aren't a slap in the face (20msp. really?), easing up on third party restrictions, a better place for indi developers, and getting rid of bad policies like no free DLC on the marketplace.

so, basically if MS continues down the road they're on I'm actually hoping this will bomb and blow up in their faces. like booing from the crowd, but that will never happen because it's on MS' home turf.

Stronger? In what way? More apps and services? I also think that MS will try to moneyhat their way to market leader again. Not falling for that though. I'm not going to buy a system where all the good stuff is behind a paywall (and only available in the US/UK). Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.
 
Well, after that sleek PS4 presentation and establishing themselves for the dominant hardware specification position, Microsoft would have to blow me away. Needs an amazing design, some fantastic features, free Live or someone saying "It's still not free ... But we have actual dedicated servers" -- That right there would cement me as a buyer day 1.

But I'm fearing a reveal that goes like this;

- Bla bla bla we're so excited, piecharts and we're the best.

- Dancing around the specs, not really going into the RAM thing because Sony has them beat.

- Showing off a bunch of stupid multimedia shit that is only for Americans, Europe might see it in 2 years.

- Live still not free, stays the same, goes all American and there's ads everywhere now.

- Call of Duty: Ghosts gameplay "Oh we have timed exclusive DLC"

- That's it folks, see you at E3.
 
I never owned an Xbox and this next console probably won't interest me either. I'm still gonna watch the conference, if I have the time, mostly because I'm curious as to where Microsoft is taking the Xbox brand.

Also, new system announcements are always exciting, even if I don't plan on ever getting them.
 
Services and features. Games matter but both systems will have great game libraries. Im not worried about MS banning gaming from the console. Services matter a lot. I started this gen 360 only and ended up PS3 only solely due to services. That's what I'll be looking for.
 
I have no doubt that they are going to be swinging for the fences with games. Their philosophy seems to be "attract the core players at first, then focus more to the casual".

The biggest thing I'm looking for is how Live Gold is going to change. Charge for multiplayer? fine, but add some damn value to it. Access to cable content (with no other cable subscription needed) alone would make me rethink about going PS4 first.
 
i thought 360 was pointless next to PS3, but I cant wait to see whats in store for 720... I hope they daze and amaze us.
 
Nothing really, I want to see a variety of interesting new games (ie not current gen games with a new lick of paint), a PS+ style subscription replacing the current paywall and what extra services they'll offer to appeal to people outside America.
I'm concerned about things like always online, blocking used games, faulty hardware and the amount of advertising.

There's a chance I'll be impressed my an interesting new game(s) but most of that is unlikely to be fully covered tomorrow.
 
There is absolutely nothing MS can do tomorrow or at E3 to convince me to buy their console over the PS4.

If they want me to buy a 720, they haveto prove they are committed to games two or three years into next gen. MS likes to trick their consumers with a dazzling opening act to get your money before slipping out the back door during intermission.

I have no doubt they will make a compelling case for the system this year but I'm on it for the long haul. Earn my support back.
 
A powerful system with impressive looking games. The PS4 already delivered on that in its initial showing so I am looking for the same from MS.

Most of all, I am looking forward to getting away from the dance publishers are having to do around next gen. Getting things out into the open.

this has always bothered me. how does Sony support most of their games with dedicated servers on a free network while MS charges us for xbl and we're stuck with p2p?
 
Tomorrow it will feel like an actual reveal.

Yes I know how the console looks may not seem important important, but when you reveal the actual console, it makes it feel more official.

So technically Microsoft will reveal their console first.

There are things that can make me buy an xbox along with PS4, and that thing is GAMES, the reason we buy consoles in the first place.

A surprise new IP that looks amazing will get me and other possibilities like Lost Oddessey 2, Alan Wake 2, Shenmue 3 (lol), a RARE game that looks good etc.

Ah didn't read the whole comment, well yes I agree with this, it's always better to wait and see what happens, especially with the whole RROD nightmare that made me quit on Xbox 360.
 
Games and a comparatively specced system to the PS4. They also need to up their anty for Xbox Live, if they expect people to pay a monthly sub then they need to add more incentive.

This. Going forwards, I don’t want to support a company that insist on extorting a toll just to enable basic functionality (like online play) out of the box ever again. Being the only company in the world with the nerve to charge users a fee to use a browser/netflix/youtube on hardware I already paid good money for, I say “…either implement it as content subscription like PS+, or go fuck yourself”.

At this point it's just curiosity because there's no way I'm giving MS any more of my money. So I'm not really looking for anything. Should be interesting though.
 
Microsoft would have to pull a complete 180 on a number of things. Mainly free online play, no Kinect and games that actually do something new (or in other words, not just more fucking shooters). We almost certainly won't see any of these things though, so meh.
 
What am I looking for:

Free multiplayer.
Not hiding basic features behind a paywall.
A much better focus on providing services outside the US.
Not locking accessories like the hard drive so MS can price gouge for ridiculously small drives.


What I expect:

None of these things.
 
Free online multilayer is the first gate. Without that, I won't consider the system regardless of whatever else it may offer.

Assuming I get that, I would only need one must play exclusive title . Or virtual reality. Lol.
 
Hipster non-developers running around with fake enthusiasm. Lots of Kinect and multi-media apps. Lot of social none-sense.

That's what I expect. I'd like a return to 2006 and free XBL multi-player, but I'm not holding my breath.
 
- Show me that games are the top priority going forward.
- Actually show some interesting exclusives.
- Less focus on Kinect, apps, TV and services in general.
- No more fee for playing my games online or getting demos on time.

I loved the first Xbox and had a blast with the 360 over the years, and have even owned 3 of them. But the paywall, the lack of interesting exclusives, the push towards Kinect and more non-gaming related features has brought me to the end of the road with Microsoft. So much so, that I just went ahead and sold my 360 again. But I will of course leave the door open to be sold on the Infinity (or whatever it's called). We shall see.
 
Honestly, I'm hear primarily for the fun show. I'm pretty much PC only now (though I was an Xbox Live member from console launch until last year).

However, if they could show me something truly amazing with Kinnect 2.0 or something new I cannot do with my current rig, then I'd consider purchasing one.

Illumaroom is not it. I just watched that video for the first time and that seems really stupid and gimmicky, much more so than the first Kinnect even.
 
I really hope they show games, but is MS and they invested a lot on Kinect and other services that doesn't appeal to me. Hope I'm wrong.
 
What I hope gets announced:

- Kinect NOT mandatory and NOT included in the box.
- Full offline functionality for single-player games.
- Used games not restricted.
- No more paywalls for services that are free or I already pay for.

Forced Kinect or no used games would be instant deal-breakers.

I'm buying one day one. I want to see their vision for the future. While I know a lot can be replicated on the PC as I have mine hooked up to the television, I want to see how this vision corresponds with their games. I love the Halos and the Forzas and the PGRs. I'm excited
 
It will take software from the B-tier devs that sold me on 360 to sell me on Durango.

What I'm looking for tomorrow is a lack of things that would unsell me: Always-on, no streaming feature, no used games, an even worse controller with the same third-party restrictions.
 
An email app.

A Skype client.

Fifteen minutes IllumiRoom demo.

A ten-minute sales pitch for yet another camera based entirely on voice recognition (which will also be rigged and fake).

At least once during the ten-minute media apps segment, they will trot out and demo one of their tablets as a remote control device.

100% hot air about the hardware; i.e. they will describe it in loose adjectives ("It's a very fast machine!"/"Developers seem very happy with it!") but omit any hard details to put their claims into context.

Nothing about Xbox Live subscription pricing or included services. Not a word. "Wait for E3" maybe.

Proud announcements of a couple timed DLC moneyhats.

Announcement of price! Actually the subsidized price! Standalone price in 7pt font footnote at the bottom right.

Actually, that's... not a bad list. I'm not hyped for the Infinity very much (stop calling it the Nextbox, for fuck sakes), but everything you listed sounds like a good deal to me. Especially #5.
 
I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

That being said, I'm more interested in what they do not say, than what they do.
 
All I want is good exclusive games. Timed exclusives or console exclusive don't count though since I have a pretty good PC and I don't mind waiting a few months for a late port. I'm not terribly interested in Halo, Gears or War, or Fable so I hope they introduce a few new IPs. I would also really appreciate if the console supported my Logitech G25 racing wheel.
 
Having a good pc I'm not sure there is anything that can impress me tomorrow. Halo 10 and COD 47 certainly won't. Would have to be something completely original and not available on pc.

Also I'm tuning out at the first mention of kinect.
 
As somebody who has never been into the Xbox brand or anything it offers, I would need to see a dramatic shift away from their usual approach to...everything. That ain't gonna happen.
