bwah but I don't...you reached first! this is the stupidest back and forth I've had on gaf. you said "this marketing campaign is unsubtle" I said "well duh" you said "well duh" I said "yeah...duh" and now I feel like we've collectively made the world so exponentially stupider that I I don't think anyone can justify the existence of the internet any more. shut it the fuck down

Jesus.

I've made a huge mistake.

After a few hours of work, I present:

Just started watching the Shield in season 2 now. The stew master himself popped up. Just makes me want to start a re-watch of AD now. All I know if I do I'll finish it in a few days. Then will need to do it again next month.

I might actually cry when I hear the intro song.

I wonder if they will keep at least "And now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything"

Seeing how people are still finding jokes/Easter eggs to this day, I wouldn't worry about that.

I just want to see a poster with the family together.

wasn't the original idea that it was supposed to be a "mockumentary" like The Osbournes?

I just saw an episode in Season 1 where Michael and Gob start fighting in a courtroom. In the scene, the judge says no filming is allowed, and then it cuts to a shot outside the room, with the camera trying to get some footage of the courtroom when the doors open every now and then. Implying that there is a camera crew there.

- A couple quick comments from David Cross on the new season over at NY Mag
Q: Arrested Development returns May 26, and Tobias will get his own episode. Will we get his backstory?

A: Yes. It’s what the absence of being on TV for seven years necessitates. Which is, you have to catch up on these characters. There’s flashbacks, there’s flash-forwards, what they’re doing now, what brings them together as a group again even though they’ve gone their separate ways, like a lot of families do. What happened when Lucille was arrested from taking the Queen Mary out? You have to explain certain things.

great now that song is stuck in my head all day.
Would you rather them tease a few new jokes that are instantly run into the ground by rabid fan hype?

exactly. the thing is you couldn't really even advertise new jokes if you wanted to. I don't get how people aren't getting that. like, even with new TV series the advertisements aren't "new jokes" they're like, a play on words involving the premise of the show. with returning TV series, even if they're returning after just a summer hiatus, the ads are always callbacks. what do you people want. If anything you should know from the show itself that advertising never makes sense:
"Why would a banana grab another banana? Those are the kinds of questions I don't want to answer"

They got wishy washy with it and ultimately decided it wasn't technically going to be a documentary, because it just wouldn't make sense for some of the scenes. It's more of a framing device than an actual plot thing, and they don't abuse the format with endless talking heads. They do use it for jokes sometimes, when it's convenient.

Mhm. AD's framing device or whatever you want to call it is not unlike Parks and Rec's: it's shot in mockumentary style, sometimes that style is exploited for comedic purposes, direct address (via voice over in AD, talking heads in Parks) makes the line between mockumentary and full-on fiction blurry. Other shows do this too now. It's a weird effect of the popularity of committed mockumentaries like The Office along with actual reality TV, I think. We find the documentary aesthetic so ordinary that we don't notice when it's being used problematically, or in a way that technically doesn't make sense.

I just rewatched the episode where Lucille is put in rehab last night and when Kitty flashes Michael at the Bluth offices, the cameraman (or someone) put their hand over the lens to block her out, so it's not like they don't call attention to it. (much like the boom mics and other things noted)

and they always use security cameras, newspaper clips, found footage, etc, to explain stuff the couldn't "record".

i think there was only a few scenes that's are out of this "framing device", a couple of first person shots from the episode where michael wants to take george michael fishing.

These posters have me concerned that there just going to rehash old jokes and play on nostalgia with this new season.

I initially had this response, but what else are posters for a beloved show coming back after years off the air going to use?

I'm not worried yet... Plus I expect some old jokes in there, so much of the show is based on old jokes and the show got better as it went on as they had more to work with it.

For some reason I was all excited for the show to air April 26th, then I realised I was stupid and it's coming in May. Now I'm sad...

Nice posters though.

Seriously some of the best marketing I've seen in awhile, but maebe that's just because I love Arrested Development so much. Too bad they couldn't have had this much of a push back when the show was actually on the air.

Youtube didn't exist back when this show was in its first 2ish seasons. Social networking was nothing compared to now.

Think about that.
