Final Fantasy VII soundtrack appreciation

I own the OST, as well as the Reunion Tracks disc, and I have to say that FFVII has one of my favourite videogame soundtracks ever. There are just so many memorable pieces...Red XIII's theme, the battle theme, Cid's theme, the sweeping overworld theme...just a ton of memorable and classic tracks. I can flip any song on and be instantly reminded of a particular point in the story. FFVII, the game and the soundtrack, will forever hold a special place in my heart, as sad and cheesy as that sounds. :p

Yeah I'm playing through it again and everything about the game is so cool, the music is a big part of that. You can argue with other tracks, but I think it has the best boss music hands down, there is no comparison.

Also I've been trying to figure out how to play Cosmo Canyon on my pennywhistle. It seems to go a note too low and I have to do a slide over the octave flip (VERY hard) so I'm guessing I need a lower key whistle for that. I knew I should have gotten that set of Gens.

FFVIII soundtrack shits all over VIIs

A little harsh, but noted. I liked FFVIII but didn't get into it as much as VII. It did have a great soundtrack though. I think I might order one of the piano collections actually.

Meh, I find it much more conventional, and thus less interesting/memorable. Nice tunes, but they just fail to stand out and say "hey, check out how cool I am, I have my own groove" like FFVII's do. What FFVIII has is some of the best use of FMV, but lets not get too far off topic.

This is correct.

Though the three or four very best songs from FF VII are better and more memorable than the songs from FF VIII. But when taken as a whole, FF VIII OST > FF VII OST.

That said, neither can best FF VI, which is about as close as you can get to perfection, especially for an OST with that many songs.

FF9 has the best Piano Collection, and the OST is up there with FF6.

FF7 is just below them, which is its fantastic too but not the best. Cosmo Canyon/Red13, Overworld, tifa, aeris and some of my fVORITES.

listening to the FF6,7,8 soundtracks...

FF7 stands on the heads of 6 and 8s.

FF6 has some really good tracks but REALLY takes a slam to earth. FF8 again has some great songs here and there but just takes a nose dive. yipes! FF7 is almost pure quality from beginning to end.

Same here. I feel like running downstairs and starting a new game of FFVII. Actually, I think I might do that before the summer is up. It's been a while since I've given the game a run through. It would be my fifth time through it. It's the FF title I've played through the most. The only other Final Fantasy that I've played through more than once has been FFIV.

I only played through FFVII one and a half times (memory card got wiped half-way through my first time, so I had to start over), and that was right after the game came out... So it's been AGES since I've played it, probably due to me losing my copy of the game a very long time ago :(

With that said, I doubt I would be able to play through it again today, I wish they'd remake it or something.

i hope they remake it. With full orchestra for the music and everything :)

I have that one copy of the FF concert done in 2002 and the FF7 music is sick :)

The Reunion OST has the FFVII theme in orchestrated form, and it sounds damn beautiful

What is it about Cosmo Canyon and whistles? I was messing around with it a couple of months ago. Mine's a D, and I figured it out okay. I can't remember if I was actually in the right key or what, but it sounded fine.

there were a couple dragging parts in FF7 though, and if they were to remake FF7 on newer systems but had the old invisible enemy system... it wouldn't fly.

They would also need to clean up the whole sephiroth/jenova thing too. Like in the beginning you think Seph is all badass, but at the end of the game is was sort of like a "wtf." feeling. With some reworking in the story and some of the game systems, it would not only be the best, but the ULTIMATE game evar.

Well on a D whistle you can easily play it in A (start by only covering the first two holes), but thats not how high the song is. You're supposed to start in E which on a D is covering all but the last hole, but if you try that you'll soon find out why it doesn't work. If my music theory is correct, you'll need an Bb whistle to play it right, and this recording of a Bb whistle sounds right in comparison to the game.

That recording is actually a Generation Bb, which is the lowest in the set of whistles I should have gotten, sure sounds pretty. Ah well, a full set of 6 goes for about $30, so it won't be long before I can get them. Now if only I had some friends who like whistles to practice with so I wouldn't drive my family insane, haha.

FFVII music is pretty great. We play the soundtrack at work sometimes, and people who are just casual gamers or whatever will look up at the speakers... they know what the song is, but can't put their finger on it. So then you tell them and they're like, "Oh yeah, that game ruled" etc.

As far as being my personal favorite, it's not. I'd take the soundtracks for NiGHTS, Panzer Saga, and SotN over FFVII, in that order.
