Crysis 3 Cost $66M To Make.

How many people are credited for this game?

This was a 2 year development?

66M$ sounds too much, somebody do the math.

Im pretty sure it was revealed that the sales from GT5 prologue by itself covered the entire budget for the full game, so all of the sales for full GT5 were pretty much profit at that point.

Another game with an official budget - God of war 3 cost $44 million to make while also creating an entirely new engine for PS3

I think he's wrong, or there's something seriously wrong with Crytek's development process.

They'll need to sell over 2 million units to break even. Probably 3 if you account for marketing and advertising.

With the games alone they never broke even. Deals with armies is their way to go. The games are more or less just big fat commercial breaks.

$60mln for 6 hour campain.

Market is about to crash

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 made a billion dollars in 15 days... but sure the market is going to somehow magically crash. The problem is we need more mid tier games and less AAA games. Hopefully that will be fixed by next gen.

Doubt that much was spent on the actual game. I can't imagine EA put that kind of money behind a franchise that has had midling success. My guess is that's the cost to develop an engine that will compete with unreal.

Wouldn't this mean that Crysis 2 that was much longer and had much more all new assets and tech that Crysis 3 reused would have a budget of like $80M or more?

If that includes marketing that seems pretty typical, but if not its definitely on the higher end I don't think a series like Crysis justifies it :/

I'm pretty sure I remember Crytek saying they lost money on Crysis 2 overall :-/

I wonder if this includes marketing?

I'm pretty sure it does. Development on the game for 2 years on previously existing technology can not have cost 60 million dollars. Especially not in Europe where the game was probably made.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Looking at Amazon, the 360 SKU is almost out of top 100, lower than OUR CUTTING MAJESTY METAL GEAR REVENGEANCE on PS3, that came out on the same day...eeeeh, do we know how much the other Crysis titles sold in US?

Probably around 950k for Crysis 2 depending how you interpret this:

Crysis 3

US sales estimate: 950,000 (including boxed PC sales)

"Although the first two iterations of the franchise were well-reviewed, we think Crysis 3 will do well to match its predecessor's performance. Its Amazon ranking is well below that of many other spring launches, and with a likely late February launch, it will not have a lot of time before competing March releases hit retail."

Can we see this 66m as the cost for "Crysis 3 + CryEngine 3" ?

If the CryEngine 3 does well , and powering up future games , 66m should worth it , no ?

I think you need to do some research about the cost of life in Frankfurt, Germany.

It still seems to be a bloated number though.

CryEngine 3 was developed alongside Crysis 2, not 3. Although undoubtedly there were improvements made during the development of C3.

FarCry = CE1
Crysis = CE2
Crysis 2 = CE3

Next gen is going to be very interesting. I laugh when I see all these spec threads and all these console exclusive gamers are flexing their e-penises on how much more powerful their preferred console is. 360/PS3 has some amazing looking games already. And if the next generation games are 5-10 times more powerful, how much is it going to cost to make truly exceptional looking games? And will studios that don't have as much money as AAA studios have the resources to fully utilize the specs to their fullest potential?

Can't wait to see!

Mediocrity is expensive.

So their message is "hey third parties develop games with Cryengine 3 and triple your cost"

They're also developing for (at least) 3 platforms now whereas with Crysis they were PC ONLY.

I thought the whole point of sequels in the video game industry was to make money on a game where a lot of the costs were sunk on the original title. No way they make their money back.

That seems like a meaningless question. Small studios haven't generally been able to use specs to their fullest potential for over a decade. The more pertinent question to ask is how much more easily smaller studios can make better games on the new hardware. And the answer is likely to be "a lot", given how much easier it is to develop for.

I've often wondered if Gears' low numbers are largely due to the fact that work that goes directly into the engine isn't counted as part of the game's budget (even if it was engine work directly inspired by the requirements of the game).

Admittedly, that's a bit of an accounting trick, but given that the engine itself is a standalone product, I can see why it's reasonable - but that's not really an option available to all developers.

Gran Turismo 5 cost $60 million a full year before it came out.
The game was announced at E3 2005, so we can assume it was in development for 3-4 at that time, and they had to scan hundreds of cars and tracks and model them, plus record sounds and built an entirely new engine and deal with online and multiplayer for the very first time.

GT5 and GT5:prologue are the same 60M$ budget. Polyphony spends average of 10M$ annualy because they never stop working. Also, their game budgets are heavily inter-sected because they are integrating projects into one-another and also share various developments with non-gaming projects they're working on.

This is why the industry needs to change. Seriously, $66m for a lot of pretty graphics. I wonder how much Far Cry 3 cost, I imagine Ubisoft did it for less than half that cost, I very much doubt console gamers will be able to tell the difference and since that is where the majority of sales come from Ubisoft will be laughing.

Wonder if well ever get another open world game from Crytek. Would've liked to see another game that's like Far Cry or Crysis 1. Shame that they had to go with the linear dumb down route with the Crysis games post Warhead to try to get that consoles gamer money. Funny how Ubisoft was far more successful continuing the Far Cry series and keeping it open world while still using a modified Cry Engine 2.

I don't understand how this works out. The game is simply smaller in scope than Crysis 2 and has the engine already developed. I would assume the point of Crysis 3 was to help amortize costs from the development of 2--which could be factored into this number here.

I don't believe the game cost 66MM on its own. If it did, just shut down the industry wholesale.
