Have we heard about a targeted release date?

I'm kind of against celebrities joining. Basically they're cheap jokes, "hey Its Seth Rogen how funny is that" It's what ruined The Simpsons and Family Guy.

I don't like it either, way too self indulgent. AD shouldn't be a spectacle, the beauty of it was it had low ratings but they still did what they wanted. Now it's hailed as a classic so there's the temptation to do extra unnecessary fluff.

AD has always been a little self indulgent and the entire series is rife with cameos and guest appearances.

I don't think anyone needs to worry.

From The Verge:

Netflix has committed to producing 14 episodes of Arrested Development, but the company's plans beyond that initial run have been a bit unclear. That's no longer the case, though it's likely at the chagrin of fans. At an investor conference today, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings described season four of Arrested Development as a "one-off" that came to be under "non-repeatable" circumstances. A company spokesperson expanded on those words, admitting to The Wall Street Journal that it would prove "extremely difficult to get the cast together" for additional episodes. Obviously the show's ensemble, which includes Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Michael Cera, have busier schedules than when Arrested Development first hit TV in 2003. Still, it's no less disappointing to learn that this is likely the end.

Hurwitz has has been pretty vocal that there will be more story to tell after this season. It would seem to me that that difficulty of getting the cast together has been surmounted. What could the reason be that it would harder after this season as opposed to before? They all came back for the love of the story and characters, not the money, and filmed more footage than anyone anticipated.

Sounds like they are just playing it safe and tempering expectation.

Yeah, this is a bit surprising, but I would guess it would be to temper expectations. I hope.

Surmounted for this one season though. Doing S4 doesn't mean all the actors have automatically cleared their schedules for a S5. They'd have to jump through the same hoops to get everyone back together again if they want to do more.

Kind of amazing they're nearly finished producing season 4 (or so I'd imagine) while that fan documentary still hasn't come out.

Obviously the show's ensemble, which includes Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Michael Cera, is dealing with busier schedules compared to when Arrested Development first hit TV in 2003.

Kinda funny that they should single out those names as reasons why another cast reunion cannot. Bateman seems to be doing well in movies......but Michael Cera isn't going to be getting any more leading roles after Scott Pilgrim bombed. He's been completely off the radar since then. Will Arnett has been getting tv commercial work, but his current sitcom is all but cancelled. Those two have nothing significant going on.

I don't see why another Season 5 would be completely unworkable. I think Netflix just did this as a sort of PR/goodwill stunt, and realizes that a show like Arrested Development will really not drive up their subscriptions.

He's already been cast in a pilot for next season.

And he still filmed Season 4 despite having a regular job on a network sitcom. If he gets a new show or Up All Night miraculously gets renewed, I don't see how that would necessarily prevent a fifth season of Arrested Development.

It's purely my own theory here, but I think Netflix is probably not getting the results they wanted with House of Cards (which apparently cost them 100 million dollars). They are going to back away from big-budget stuff with established stars. They will still cultivate exclusive, original content, but it will be more small-scale projects. Instead of trying to coordinate a big and complex project like AD, they will veer more towards leaner projects from up-and-coming talent (something like say, Portlandia - though not that show specifically).

I also think they will back away from this "Let's release every new episode at once" strategy, and move more towards something like broadcast television. Maybe every week there's a new, fresh episode that can be viewed by non-subscribers for a single day, while paying members get extended access.

It wouldn't be the same hoops. They already figured out the logistics of getting everyone back which had to be the toughest part. There was no way of knowing they could do it and now they know they can. Pretty big lesson learned. And while they have everyone back, it would makes sense to talk about the future while they can. If they did absolutely no future talk with cast and crew, then they fucked up.

Tony Wonder to appear in new season

It’s neither trick nor illusion: Ben Stiller will appear on the revived Arrested Development, EW has learned. The film star will reprise his role as Tony Wonder, rival magician to GOB (Will Arnett), in one episode during the new season of the cult comedy, which Netflix will stream in May.Exactly how he fits into the plot is being kept under wraps. But it may not be a bad idea to check the dumbwaiter.
