An article which doesn't contain much new informatin, but should put to death the conspiracy rumors.

The messages were instead what the source terms “kind of cat fight stuff.”

“More like, ‘Who do you think you are? … You parade around the base …You need to take it down a notch,’” according to the source, who was until recently at the highest levels of the intelligence community and prefers not to be identified by name.

The base being MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, where Kelley serves as an unpaid “social liaison.” The source reports that the emails did make one reference to Gen. David Petraeus, but it was oblique and offered no manifest suggestion of a personal relationship or even that he was central to the sender’s spite.

...

When the FBI friend showed the emails to the cyber squad in the Tampa field office, her fellow agents noted that the absence of any overt threats.

“No, ‘I’ll kill you” or ‘burn your house down,’” the source says. “It doesn’t seem really that bad.”

[snip]

This doesn't sound like a huge conspiracy to me. I think it's relevant that Petraeus himself was only messaged once in those exchanges. It sounds like Broadwell felt threatened by Kelley in general and wanted to knock her down.

And I'll just say it: Broadwell became famous partially due to her unprecedented access to Petreaus. The fact that she was having an affair with her subject, and was apparently insecure enough to feel threatened by a complete stranger, looks really bad. It's like"Mean Girls" high-school-stuff, where the alpha is trying to neutralize a threat to her status.

With respect to the timing of the resignation:
In all electronic surveillance, including e-mails, the FBI is legally compelled to adhere to the principle of “minimization,” limiting the invasion of privacy as much as possible to what is specifically warranted. This applies even when a case involves the worst kinds of criminals.

If Petraeus hadn't resigned we probably would never have heard about it.

wow.

The FBI agent who started the case was a friend of Jill Kelley, the Tampa woman who received harassing, anonymous emails that led to the probe, according to officials. Ms. Kelley, a volunteer who organizes social events for military personnel in the Tampa area, complained in May about the emails to a friend who is an FBI agent. That agent referred it to a cyber crimes unit, which opened an investigation.

However, supervisors soon became concerned that the initial agent might have grown obsessed with the matter, and prohibited him from any role in the investigation, according to the officials.

The FBI officials found that he had sent shirtless pictures of himself to Ms. Kelley, according to the people familiar with the probe.

it gets deeper. read in.

So much for my theory.

And the FBI is searching Broadwell's home right now. What is going on here?

One official said the agent in question sent shirtless photos to Ms. Kelley well before the email investigation began, and FBI officials only became aware of them some time later. Eventually, supervisors told the agent he was to have nothing to do with the case, though he never had a formal role in the investigation, the official said.

Paula Broadwell, at the center of the Petraeus case, poses with her biography of the former CIA Chief in January.

The agent, after being barred from the case, contacted a member of Congress, Washington Republican David Reichert, because he was concerned senior FBI officials were going to sweep the matter under the rug, the officials said. That information was relayed to top congressional officials, who notified FBI headquarters in Washington.
GAF, I hate the term "white knight." But if the shoe fits...

Yeah, it's weird. I'm guessing Petraeus was suspected of having an affair with Broadwell for good while, which is obviously a security concern. But all this other stuff has to be smoke and mirrors; a cover to draw attention away from the real reason why the FBI was investigating the CIA chief (come on, let's think about how fucked up that is.) The current story line is that the FBI kinda just.... through pure happenstance... stumbled into investigating the CIA director. That doesn't really hold water.

I'm guessing the deputy CIA director and other top brass within the agency knew the FBI was investigating him, and the FBI were likely given clearances to do so. I have a hard time believing it was for the affair alone, but I guess it's possible.

To me it's so much more obvious than you're all making it seem.

Pretty sure it went like this, knowing what we now know:

1- Jill Kelley, is a Republican supporter and knew that Broadwell was probably having an affair with Petraeus.
2- She managed to tell Cantor/or whoever.
3- Cantor told some other buddies at the FBI.
4- Meanwhile Broadwell found out Jill Kelley had ratted her out and was attacking her reputation.
5- Broadwell sends threatening anonymous emails to Kelley telling her to mind her fucking business and not mess with me, bitch!
6- Kelly is in direct contact with someone at the FBI who has become her contact on the matter, considering she is the source of the tip and that by now the FBI person is (or are, if many) happy to have shit on the CIA's director. She tells him about the e-mails.
7- Done deal.

edit: Just read the above. Pretty much nailed it.

The stupid, it burns:

NYTIMES: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/13/us/timeline-shows-fbi-discovered-petraeus-affair-in-summer.html

How can someone live that way....? Seeing a conspiracy behind every rock?

Again, correct, ha.

The only part missing now is why Broadwell sent harassing/angry emails at Kelley. Probably because Kelley, like that FBI dude, were spreading the rumors about Broadwell and she heard about it and got pissed.

So Petraeus went down because of a Glenn Beck fan who worked for the FBI, lol.

edit: More http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/11/broadwells-e-mails-werent-all-that-threatening.html

Since the FBI doesn't have time to launch a full-scale investigation into every mildly unsettling e-mail that winds up in Americans' inboxes, many have come to the conclusion that the messages Paula Broadwell allegedly sent to Tampa socialite Jill Kelley contained some pretty serious threats. However, if the Daily Beast's "knowledgeable source" is to believed, the Petraeus scandal actually started with e-mails that read more like something pulled from Gossip Girl, albeit with respected intelligence officials rather than sexy trust fund kids. The source, who "until recently at the highest levels of the intelligence community," says they didn't contain jealous warnings like, "stay away from my man," but were “More like, ‘Who do you think you are? … You parade around the base … You need to take it down a notch.’” There was “No, ‘I’ll kill you’ or ‘I'll burn your house down,’” the source adds. (Interestingly, while this suggests the image of Broadwell as an unhinged harlot is an exaggeration, the source goes on to characterize the messages as “kind of cat-fight stuff.”)

Article says one wonders why the FBI gave it attention to begin with, but from what we know it was one person in the FBI who made a huge fuss out of it because of their own close-ties to Kelley (more like white-knight, sending shirtless pictures of himself). He is probably the source of the whole leak.

the FBI agent friend who first heard Kelley's complaints about the e-mails is now under investigation by the agency for questionable conduct, including sending shirtless photos of himself to Kelley.

So basically, a rogue nut.

The October the same agent reportedly leaked information about the scandal to GOP congressman Dave Reichert, who then told Eric Cantor. “I don’t know if it would have taken this course without Cantor,” said a person involved in the investigation.

Perfect. The Republicans are responsible!

I await the 11th dimensional chess checkmate.

Even after learning of the investigation, Petraeus initially had no plans to resign. Peter Mansoor, a retired Army colonel who served as Petraeus's executive officer in Iraq, tells the Washington Post, "Once he knew it was going to go public, he thought that resigning was the right thing to do. There is no way it would have remained private.” Petraeus and Broadwell had attempted to keep their e-mails secret by saving them as drafts and then logging into each other's gmail accounts. The Associated Press notes that the trick is "known to terrorists and teenagers alike" so unsurprisingly, it didn't fool FBI agents.

lol

I have to ask this question

what does sexual scandals and cheating have to do with a person's ability to do there job ?

who gives a fuck as long as it wasn't illegal or underage sexual w/e ?

So what is Jill Kelley's role in all of this. Mistress? Originally I was under the assumption she was threatening to tell Holly all

WaPo: "FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of “potentially inappropriate” emails between General John Allen and Jill Kelley."

it don't stop.

According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of “potentially inappropriate” emails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa woman whose close friendship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall. Allen, a Marine, succeeded Petraeus as the top allied commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.

I give up.

Not all jobs are created equal. That's the first and last thing you have to understand about this situation.

Blackmail.
If he had to deal with people underneath him having affairs and having to demote/end their careers, it would look pretty bad if it was publicly known he was doing the same thing.
Adultery is a criminal offence in the military.

A honey trap is a classic way to get information from people with sensitive information.

This has turned into a motion picture...

Wow this just took an interesting turn. Four families lives turned into soap opera's just like that. This is like the plot of an episode of cheaters, Joey Greco would be proud. Has any of these people ever heard of divorce? I'm sure it would be better than all of the embarrassment.

Considering Jill Kelleys pastime. Sounds like she was just a uniform obsessed groupie. Her whole role was an unpaid event planner for the military basically. She just took on the role of the slutty girls hired to be slutty at the clubs allegedly

Maybe Burn After Reading wasn't so far from the truth.

So a weirdo FBI agent with conspiracy on the brain and 2 GOP house members who believed him got the general fired? Haha.

No, and FBI agent with a serious boner for Jill Kelley trying to white knight his way into her panties.

By the sounds of it they all thought they could bring obama down with the general lol.

The fbi also needs better psych testing.

How is this going to bring down Obama?

So FBI agent with boner thought he could win her heart by talking down the general and Obama as the frosting on top?

Why did canter hold this info?

This movie will be interesting . Get affleck to direct.

No, he thought he could assuage Jill Kelley's fears about someone sending harassing emails. The cybercrimes unit almost called bullshit on the entire thing, but the FBI agent somehow convinced them otherwise.

This had nothing to do originally with Broadwell, Petraeus, or a potential security breach, which makes it all the more amusing, stupid, and worrisome.

It's not a feeling you get very often.

I don't see any way it could, but one of the articles mentioned that the fbi agent thought there was a cover up to 'protect the president'. Apparently that's why he got in touch with cantor or the other guy. Maybe cantor and the other guy first thought there was more to the story if the fbi agent thought there was a cover up concerning obama. I mean when an fbi agent comes to you and says that, you'd think he was serious. Though I didn't read all the available articles so I don't know if that's how he brought it up to cantor et all.

Any idea that this to protect the president is profoundly bullshit. Why would Cantor hold this in his pocket for a month during an election season if that was the case?

Also, Petraeus isn't dead, he just resigned. He will probably still be dragged to the hill to testify in anything serious.

I don't understand your point here. I'm saying the guy thought this not that I believe this has anything to do with obama. And cantor didn't mention it because it had nothing to do with obama, seems obvious. I'm talking about how the fbi agent thought it had to do with obama, went to cantor et all and possibly made them believe it had to do with the president.

Oh, I believe he went to Cantor to try to either grease the wheels on the investigation, inform him of the coming shit storm, or tell him after the investigation turned up no security breach had been found, to go over the head of his boss and inform someone higher up.

In all of those situations, dude needs to be fired pronto.

Yea, none of us are saying it would bring down Obama . That's what one of the articles said and what fox news is pushing somehow that this was a cover up to help his election.

It's funny stuff. That FBI agent blew it, lol.

Hmmm I still do not understand why he resigned.

You cheat, get caught , get a divorce and continue to do your job as cia director.

Is it really that hard ?

That "white knight" FBI agent is a foolish moron, and I hope he gets into some serious trouble.

If it wasn't for him, Petraeus would not have resigned, and I doubt any of this would have made the news.
