That is true. But there isnt much about these models that makes me think that they couldnt be done in a real time rendered cutscene.
ND use a much higher quality skin shader for cut-scenes (for starters). As for real-time, they do use a render farm.

I hate all prerendered cutscenes
Even when gears of war did it
Even 343 guilty spark in space and cortana talking to the gravemind
Hate em all
(That's why I was super happy halo 3 legendary ending wasn't prerendered unlike the other 2)
I really hope more games don't rely on pre-rendered in-engine cut-scenes next gen with all 3 consoles have more disc storage. Anything pre-rendered is just not impressive on a technical level IMO. Sure they look great, most of the time, but real time cut-scenes are what I want.
I was mostly thinking about Killzone 3, should have pointed that out. Do you have any source for that by the way? I do think it might be the case, but i would like to read more about itND use a much higher quality skin shader for cut-scenes (for starters). As for real-time, they do use a render farm.

I also like it for games where the character can have different appearances. That would really only apply to Reach out of the whole series, but it was still cool.Real-time all the way, I agree. Not because it's more impressive on a technical level, but because it allows for things like customized appearances in cutscenes and, well...

Yoshi's Island is still the best-looking game I've ever seen
First post of the page too... it's always great to be reminded of how beautiful Yoshi's Island looks even by today's 2D standards.Thank you for this completely unrelated post.

Based on that comparison, the former looks better indeed. Maybe they use some extra textures and lightning there. It never occured to me because the cutscene models doesnt look way above in-game from what i can remember. But looking closer, maybe there are some extra techniques being used in the cut scene. It is a bit hard to see 100% because the bottom gif is shaking, got lower framerate and are bigger in resolution. It is also not the same model/person.Pre-renderd:

The 3D effects in Yoshi's Island still blows my mind.
I'm thinking of all Killzone 3 gifs on this page. From what i've seen from the game itself, the cutscenes doesnt strike me as something that are above the game itself in technical terms (it has been a while since i've played Killzone 3 single player, but at least from what i can remember). But you're right, we dont know for sure if better texture and extra lighting effects are added or not. Cutscenes in general can also make things look pretty nice because of the fixed cameras and the extra animations that can be done. For example Mass Effect, does the models look just as detailed in the game itself compared to the dialouge models?

Wait, what Halo cut-scenes were pre-rendered?.
Super FX 2 chip was a beast!

This reminds me of how much i want Nintendo to make another 2D sprite based Mario game again :\ But i love seeing that stuff anywaySuper FX 2 chip was a beast!

Looking even more closely, the texture details on the facial skin looks very detailed, maybe more than could be done in real time on today's consoles yeah. Playing the game on a 40" TV, i remember that scene looked really good, but i didnt think strike me as it could be pre-rendered.I was commenting on this video posted before:
http://youtu.be/okEHi9Xl6QE?hd=1&t=4m33s
IMO that could be beyond what current gen can produce in real time.
Wait, what Halo cut-scenes were pre-rendered?
There's guilty spark after the halo ce credits (very brief)
And
Cortana talking to the gravemind (Halo 2 legendary ending)
That's it. All others were realtime.
Thankshttp://twitter.yfrog.com/gz91aafwj
This is the talk on their skin shading:http://advances.realtimerendering.c... 2010 Advanced RealTime Rendering Course).pdf
As for KZ3, the pre-rendered stuff was also done at 1080p (and 1080p 3D), so no they wouldn't be real-time on a single PS3.Even so, they can go much heavier on particles in various scenes.
Almost. Starfox uses Super FX, the previous version of that chip. Yoshi's Island uses Super FX 2.Is it the same chip used on Starfox?
Do you have links stating they are pre-rendered? It's been a while since I played either game, but from what I recall neither scene seemed beyond what was possible on the xbox.
Both had compression artifacts that irritated me
Both sequences were easily doable in real time
They were still pre-rendered
I'm not trying to make a counter arguement on this by the way. I'm just wonderding about it. I just wanted to point that out in case it looked like that![]()
Guilty Spark flying in space at the end of Halo CE. I'm pretty certain Halo 2's legendary ending was real-time.
Are you seriously questioning this? They were both post credit sequences

Wat. Both of these Killzone 3 cutscenes are from pre-rendered videos in the game. I even double checked to make sure.Pre-renderd:

Different lighting conditions and different facial expressions (yelling vs pouting).Lol, the first one looks a lot better than the bottom (lighting, animation, etc).
Thing is unlike with the original trilogy, the Reclaimer Trilogy has already been planned out story-wise. So, it's mainly the tech and probably bits and pieces of the story they have to work on. I'm guessing the next game will be late 2014.Halo CE = 2001
Halo 2 = 2004
Halo 3 = 2007
Halo 4 = 2012
Halo 5 = 2015?

Halo killer
Someone made the mistake of making a gif of Halo 4's graphics, when everyone on gaf knows that Killzone has the best gifs.

I forgot that PS3 games have exclusivity on having the best visuals.
How careless of me.
