Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

I don't get it...how do I get Steam onto my TV? I thought that was the point of this, and not an new interface to use on your PC.

The same way you connect every other device to your TV? Hook your PC up to your TV via HDMI cable. Set your PC next to your TV and use a short HDMI cable, buy a 30 ft long HDMI cable from amazon for $8 and run it yourself, or set up a more expensive but convenient wireless HDMI to your TV. Your choice.

Stop leading him on, guys.

Use the Re-scan channels function on your TV. Steam needs to run in Big Picture Mode, though. Otherwise the TV won't find it.

Well yeah, you could always do that.

But to get it to work that way I had to wrap aluminum foil around my TV's aerial antennae (which I had to dig out of my closet since I haven't used them in 10 years). Pain in the ass.

Hmm, since I updated to Big Picture Mode, RadeonPro doesn't seem to be working (with DarkSiders II at least). Anyone have this problem?

I tried out big picture mode with my mouse earlier. Surfed through my game collection/lists, watched some videos on game pages, browsed through some pictures, checked the chat interface, surfed the web(NPR, GAF and my OT) and even watched youtube. It's absolutely delicious. I can't wait to use this on my TV with my future HTPC. There is a bit of stutter when you switch blocks, but it's a lot faster than XBL and way more aesthetically pleasing than PSN. Love that the games are the major focus on this UI.

A single HDMI cable connecting your PC to your TV. It's not that different from a console...

I am beginning to wonder how many console gamers were unaware that modern HDTVs and PC monitors are functionally identical until this announcement. Would explain a lot of comfy-couch-controller comments.

RadeonPro was working with Dark Souls last night. One unique setting I have enabled in that profile though is "Force aggressive API detection level" in the tweak tab. For some reason I need to force that setting to prevent a crash in Dark Souls after the latest DSfix. Maybe that is a contributing factor, here?

I do. And many others do because it changes how people play games. People group together and ignore objectives just to inflate their shitty gamerscore, which is a meaningless number. Stick to Xbox if you want that trash.

I assume you're talking about games with shitty multiplayer achievements?

Solution: no shitty multiplayer achievements.

Does BPM make anyone else's GPU temperature go up? As soon as I start BPM the GPU goes into a high power state and the idle temperature goes from 29 to 45.

As I've posted quite a few times, this is not a low usage app. So it's not real shocking.

Console OSes are sluggish and hide things with built in animations. This thing is absolutely instantaneous with actions and as smooth as knife through butter (if you have the hardware). It seems to come at the cost of significant GPU usage, though. Because of the tearing, however, I'd love for technical gaf to answer whether or not this could be caused from it rendering at an insane FPS. D3D does nothing to stop the tearing on even my 120hz monitor.

Windows 8 64bit+Ati 5770 combo crashes on BP mode after 20-30 sec of use, always :/

Too bad since the BP stuff seems awesome.

I just checked. Freaky, The temperature went up from 29 to 45.

So this broke my steam client.

- Opt in beta
- click restart, client closes, nothing happens
- click on "Steam" program, says it's already running
- force the steam.exe process to quit, then try starting app
- See update progress bar, crawls until half-way (takes 4 hours) then gets stuck at 49%
- Only solution? well last time this happened, I had to wipe my data clean, re-download and reinstall all my games.

Fuck....this....shit

Report that on the Steam forums.

This is after all a BETA. Like a real beta, not one of those fake marketing betas. They are looking for feedback/bug fixes.

Dude, no. Post this in the official Steam thread. Pretty sure the answer is just delete the blob file.

GabeN, please never bring "gamerpoints" to Steam. Please please please.

Never delete your steamapps folder, and you will never have to re-download any game. Cut and paste the steamapps folder in a safe spot while you figure your problem out if you want to make sure that doesn't happen.

Weird, I'm not getting any tearing at all. However I'm only on a 60Hz monitor. The performance outside of games is great but according to FRAPS it runs at 24fps when using the in-game overlay. Hopefully that performance can be increased as the beta progresses.

Thanks for the input but I know about the blops solution. Did not work before, so I don't see it working now :(

It just repeats.

Solution last time was to reinstall Steam as a whole, then the update happens again, BUT this time it hangs for much less time and eventually finishes very suddenly. Then comes the agonizing process of re-downloading games.

I'll still try with blops since I've got nothing to lose. But yeah....

I kept getting this random sound effect that sounds like a bowel movement. Really freaked me out in Dark Souls.

Anyone know what this is for? Is it a notification?

Move the steamapps folder somewhere else, delete steam, install steam, move steamapps folder back.. profit.

So if you keep rapidly switching from one image to another, you don't have tearing in the middle of the screen?

At the very least I know I'm not the only one with this. So it's not all on my end.

Well just checked with the 'one image to another' multiple times thing and no tearing for me.

I deleted the profile to Darksiders II and remade a new one and it worked after that.

*Shrugs*

Oh well, at least it fixed it. :P

Thanks, will try that.

Just so I can contribute, I DID actually see big picture mode running on a friend's PC earlier today, and was impressed with how smooth everything was, but holy hell his system went nuts.

Granted he never plays anything beyond Team Fortress 2 and World of Warcraft, but he freaked out at how loud it was after big picture mode was on for a few minutes.

I'm on my phone and don't have the time to check the whole thread so sorry if it's been answered, but say I want to play Torchlight (the first one) with a controller on Steam on my TV, it's possible? What kind of controller do I have to use? I have a wired 360 so I guess that would work?

While looking at the games in your Library, was pressing the bumpers to jump to the next letter always there?? I remember pressing the bumpers yesterday to speed up the scrolling and nothing was happening.

On another note, only thing that's showing right now behind my Library in the main menu and on the recent games that shows up when you click on it is my DayZ shortcut, including the custom icon which doesn't show up when I'm looking at all the games. And I haven't played Dayz in weeks.

Since I find using controllers are the best for PC gaming, this interface is real slick and nice. I like it.

Same here.

I know what people are saying about lacking, late, etc... but me being primarily a console gamer who tries to be more of a pc gamer this is a huge gap that has been bridged.

Hey, we've stuck it out with Sony while they got their online, features and UI worked on. I think I give Valve some of my patience and let them do what they need to do. I'm sure it will be worth it.

No tearing here whatsoever, neither on my TV nor on my laptop screen (both at 60 Hz).

Thanks, will try that.

It could do with going into 'standby' if you haven't used it for a while - eg just turning off any accelerated GPU stuff/dimming the screen so you can leave it sitting there without wasting too much power or being noisy.

Is there a way to browse to other games in the store than the default categories in the genres? I can only see Featured, Top-Seller, Coming-Soon and so on. How would you find the rest of the store, or is this just not yet implemented
or am I too dense?

Tried it yesterday and really liked it. Games seem to run all wonky, like starting up in 4:3 windowed mode and other such random oddness, but in terms of the UI itself, I dig it. More so than what's being done on the consoles, which says a lot, IMO.

BPM opens for me when Steam is minimized to the tray and I hit the Xbox Guide button, but I do get a warning about Steam being set to compatibility mode prior to BPM opening.

Guide button seems to be working for me now, but if I have the main window open it needs to have focus.

Also got rid of the useless Xbox help popup by removing Xboxstat.exe from autorun.

Win 8 64bit here too, 6950 for me. Crashes a few seconds after I start it up. I take this as a sign for me to go back to Win 7 again. I've had enough of Win 8 for now.
