Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

If you press F6 in the Big picturemode you get the debugger. You can edit realtime what you want to change. Only haven't found out how i can save this (p4.exe not found)

Interesting.

Digging around, I think I see why the custom icons don't work - the AppID they're pulling doesn't match with the ones generated when setting a non-Steam shortcut (at least I think they're generated AppIDs based on the filenames of the custom icons when integrated into Steam). I think that also explains why the custom icons for Steam games work - the AppID they're pulling is correct and matched up to the picture set by the user - but not for non-Steam shortcuts, where there's no "official" AppID to pull from.

I'm not a programmer, but that's what it looks like to me.

Does this method still work today?? I have the same issue with sound and need a fix

Yes. I last used it less than two weeks ago, before I wiped my PC. Unfortunately, the site with the program on doesn't exist any more.

It's a real niche problem and I'm sad to see the solution has vanished. If you find anything else that works well, let me know.

I really like that I can have steam hidden in the taskbar, press the guide button on the controller and whabam! There it is!
Is this true??

Does this mean I can be using Chrome (or whatever), and then just hit my 360 guide button and as long as Steam is running my tray it will automatically start Big Picture Mode?

EDIT: Also, can I create a custom category for emulator shortcuts? (i.e. "Wii Category (Dolphin)" with shortcuts to "Super Mario Galaxy", etc)

I was gonna lazily try out YouTube while in bed, but the power button is too far away.

To be able to at least turn off a PC through Steam would be a positive.

Yes.

This wouldn't work for me :( The guide button works as it should any other time, but having Steam minimised and pressing it doesn't open big picture mode. May be a problem with Windows 8.

i'm on W7 and it doesn't work unless the steam window is either in focus or minimized to the taskbar. it doesn't work if steam is just regularly minimized and running on the desktop in the background. i have to close it so the icon disappears from the start bar and then it works fine

Thanks, I'll try that tonight and see if it works for me.

Hey errr... Look what's in the latest beta:

Start Steam with -dev
Go to console and type install_folder_ui
Add an empty folder

Hmm, doesn't work here, I just get the 360 controller "Click for help" popup.

Oh, that's great, I hope it makes it into the standard release soon.

That should work if you make a "game" shortcut in Steam and point it to C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe

As arguments set -s -t 00

:)

Is that feature what I think it is?

I can haz Steam on SSD now? And all games on my 2TB drive? Without resorting to SteamMover shenanigans?

Yes to which part?

All of it. If steam is running in the background, pressing the guide button at anytime will launch bpm.

Setting up shortcuts for emulators to auto load roms can work through steam, setting up the shortcut/bat for the emulator itself can be complicated.

Right now, you have to have Steam in Large mode to be able to start BPM with the Home button on the controller. I'd rather be able to do that from Small mode.

Huh? No we're not. They just did a massive overhaul last year.

The last time Steam had a major UI update was in April 2010, when they released the current skin. I'd say that we are due for a new update to match the stylings of BPM. At least, I hope we are.

Anybody else getting nasty vsync issues in BPM? I want to make sure its not just something on my end.

Even with D3D Overider using v-sync/triple buffering (and I get the chime when entering full screen mode), I get pretty nasty tearing in the middle of the screen when cycling through things. Even on a 120hz monitor this happens.

I suspect this thing is rendering at some insane framerate. That would explain why it uses the GPU resources it does. Program desperately needs a fps cap command.

I agree. However, with the move to tablets and stuff that MS is doing, I don't think that's a priority for them. They seem to care more about one screen, than power users at their desks, or with elaborate home theater setups.

The best method right now to deal with a multi monitor TV + desktop scenario in Windows is to use UltraMon.

I had a setup as follows:

Monitor 1 + Monitor 2 | PC | <---Several feet---> HDTV

All of them were hooked up to my PC at the same time (both monitors over DVI, and the HDTV over HDMI). I used UltraMon to create two profiles, one where Monitor 1 + Mointor 2 were used, and another where Mointor 2 and HDTV were used. I then had those profiles saved as shortcuts, which I pinned to the start menu. So to get the TV interface was simply a matter of pressing Start --> "TV Mode".

It worked really well.

The only issue I had was sound, but I found a real lightweight program called 'Win7AudioSwitcher', which had a cool function that remembered what your default audio device was in relation to your primary monitor. So I taught it to remember my PC speakers for Monitor 1 as primary, and HDMI audio when the HDTV was my primary. It worked perfectly.

Basically, what I'm getting at is that it's probably not too difficult to put basic monitor and audio switching as I explained above into Big Picture Mode. If it can be done with third party applications, I can't see why Valve can't have it built into Steam. With a bit of configuring in the options, you could tell it which monitor to go to and what audio device to switch to when you press that 'Big Picture' button, and then Steam knows to revert back to the old one when you go back to the desktop.

Hey man, thanks for the heads up. I just downloaded the two programs you mentioned ('Win7AudioSwitcher' and 'Ultramon') and after tinkering around a bit made two quick shortcuts, pinned them to my taskbar, and now everything switches to my HDTV with the click of a single button. Figureing out how to get Win7AudioSwitcher to do it automatically took a bit. Apparently, you have to uncheck then recheck it (defualt is checked) and then cycle between what you want a few times.

Now I need to figure out how to not have big picture mode start when I hit the Xbox button. I have a script that lets me shut down my wireless controller if I hold the Xbox button for 5 seconds, and it's real annoying if it keeps popping me into Big Picture Mode when I want to turn it off.

Oh geez, that was two years ago?

Regardless, Valve isn't really one to keep that kind of stuff updated, if their track record is any indication. I seriously doubt we'll see a UI update for another couple of years, especially considering all the Community stuff they just added matches to current UI.

On a side note, this still crashes for me. Looked through the group and apparently they didn't test AMD drivers with Windows 8. You know, who has AMD cards anyways right?

This is exactly what I wanted.

I can pick up an Alienware X51, have it boot into Steam, activate big picture mode with the 360 controller, and I'm good to go.

SteamBox!

Actually the community stuff has blue all over it. I wouldn't be surprised to see the whole client be changed to look like that.

Holy crap this is awesome, especially the integration between BPM and the 360 controller.

Yeh, I was totally caught off guard by this as I haven't been following the gaming side of discussion for a bit. Jumped online and saw this, downloaded it and I'm in love with this already.

I always play games (cept strategy) while laying in bed and using my Xbox360 controller so this just makes things way easier to manage. I am usually a console before PC kind of gamer but with the systems being so old and PC games looking better, running better and being way cheaper (up to half price on Steam even before Steam sales) this has been a real no brainer.

I'll be buying Borderlands 2 on 360 just because that is where my friends will be but if that wasn't the case every game would be on PC from now on and I'm seriously reconsidering whether I will be a console again. I probably will just for exclusives but the way Steam is heading it's getting more and more of my game time to the point it's overtaking my console time, my 360 has been little more than a media extender for awhile now.

I just wish Steam Achievements were better integrated, aside from friends it's the one other last feature that keeps me on Xbox Live. With no running total the achievements feel kind of pointless, that is a feature Microsoft really nailed when the 360 came out and it's now the only achievement tally I bother with (didn't give a rats for Trophies as it came late) and I really do enjoy Games for Windows Live titles, which I have never ever had a problem with even after formatting so I don't understand the general GFWL hate that does around, I like that it's all tied to my Gamercard.

But yeh apart from adjusting to this new Steam OS and finding the quickest way to navigate etc, it's been exceptional so far.

Yeah, this is what I've been talking about. The new Steam community pages look nothing like the client any more and big picture mode just cements the fact that Valve are capable of making amazing looking interfaces these days. Need I remind you of Steam 1.0? :P

Gross.
