Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

Looks pretty damn good, but I've already noticed a somewhat significant issue: The menu you use for switching categories disappears off the top of my screen, making it impossible to see anything but the last few categories.

I'm at work for another 4 hours. Post screenshots please!

Okay.

Can't see how to get BPM to display on my TV rather than the monitor. WoW I can pick the display, for example. Not so here, or I can't see that option. Putting the window on the TV first and hitting BPM still makes it run on the PC's monitor.

I'm guessing you need to make your TV the main screen.

It won't connect. :(

I'm as excited for this stupid thing as I was the day I took home my PS2. And I'll probably just lose interest in 5 minutes anyhow. lol

This is worthless unless every game on steam also has a big picture UI mode. Most PC games out there are unplayable on a TV because the UIs and text are so small.

No it isn't. The games that do support controllers will benefit greatly from this. It should also help push developers to have proper controller support and UI adjustments.

lol wat?

"most" is taking it too far. I've run into like 5. Mostly older text heavy RPGs.

It is sort of worthless in general if every game doesn't support controllers (games that could), but this is the step needed to get people to do that.

Anyways. I need d-pad support. I hate using sticks for navigation.

Seems like they want to use those buttons for other features. I could get used to it for that.

My hopes is that this serves as the impetus for devs to start pushing TV-sized fonts. I'm going blind here with monitor sized text...

I have yet to play a game that supported a gamepad that was unplayable on my TV due to UI or text.

For reference I own around 140 games on Steam. (Also a few on Origin and Impulse)

Looks very slick, I like it.

I'd like a borderless window mode so I can run it on the second monitor instead of it defaulting to my main display.

its really good and will work great on a tv. although while i'm on a pc with keyboard + m i see no need for it.

also is there an option to jump to chats quicker?

This needs to get fixed, right now:

I can't see the categories above the edge of the screen, so I can't see what I'm selecting, which makes my entire category setup completely useless.

And not being able to use the D-pad to navigate sucks incredibly hard. That's an oversight I can't believe they've made, considering how awful it is to navigate an interface like this using an analog stick.

Does the fact that I'm opted into the Steam Client beta have anything to do with why I don't have this yet?

I got the update the moment I did opt in, so no, that's not it. Try opting out and then in again, perhaps?

BTW, is there a way to automatically filter out all the games with no controller support in your library when in BPM? Otherwise they should add that.

Beta.

Love how you can just hit the home button on the 360 controller to launch into Big Picture Mode.

Only gripe is you can't navigate with the d-pad.

It should have updated and given you the button in the top right. Maybe try opting out and re-opting back in again?

Okay, I just checked and it looks like I got automatically opted out again or something. Opted back in and updating now.

Wheeeeeee!
