Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

So to utilize those elements we just add them to our launch executable?

Or can you access console with a controller?

Don't understand the question. The resolution support quoted is to do with the way that Big Picture Mode renders itself via the graphics card to the screen.

I work for a F2P browser MMO company. We are ready for deployment a week before we do. You need to test this shit thoroughly.

And that's just for updates and patches. No big features.

There is no universe where this thing hasn't been finished before today. But for whatever reason they might be having issues pushing it to over 50 million users all at once.

Having that in their promotional material is probably going to give ASRock a nice little boost in sales for that box.

Talking about hardware reminds me of this recent quote:

It gets more interesting from there. "We're frustrated by the lack of innovation in the computer hardware space though, so we're jumping in," Valve declares. "Even basic input, the keyboard and mouse, haven't really changed in any meaningful way over the years. There's a real void in the marketplace, and opportunities to create compelling user experiences are being overlooked."

Hmm.... I am thinking Valve will be working on a new controller method for Big Picture Mode. It makes sense when you think about it.

I am not a PC gamer, but this looks very attractive to me. A Wii U for Nintendo games, and Steam for all the other stuff that won't come to it. I wonder how expensive a minimum spec PC would be to make?

Do you know the meaning of the word "beta" with regards to computer software, because it sounds like you don't.

i think what valve/someone needs to do now is to make like a Cat5 orlan box for streaming hdmi/usb over your electric sockets. would be waay cheaper and hassle-free than making another htpc or whatever.

If you live in a place where you can run some Cat6 you can pass HDMI and USB over that.

I currently have it setup so both mine and my gf's PC's can connect to both the TV in the lounge and the rumpus. We are using HDMI extenders over Cat6 and USB extenders over Cat6 (with a usb hub). I usually play PC games in the rumpus on a plasma while my PC is upstairs, the HDMI straight into the receiver and in the USB hub I have a bluetooth kb/mouse dongle, a wireless 360 receiver, Logitech desktop mic and a G25.

I have been using this setup for about 6 months now and it is flawless (apart from a couple of teething issues with the USB hub).

If the Cat6 runs are short (in my case no longer than 30M/100ft) you can get away with cheaper HDMI and USB extenders. If not you will have to buy something more expensive.

The HDMI extender I am using:

About $40* on Ebay

And the USB extender I am using:

About $80* from a local store (USB 2.0)

*Australian prices

I have also used powered USB cables in the past without an issue.

What's a rumpus? It sounds.... Dirty ;)

I'm from US and never heard this before. We call it basement or cellar...not sure what "rumpus" is
Google says:

rum·pus/ˈrəmpəs/
Noun:
A noisy disturbance; a commotion: "he caused a rumpus with his flair for troublemaking".

That's the only way I've ever heard it used before now.

I guess it's what people in the US call a basement? Basically a room downstairs used for gaming, movies etc.

Okay. I wish my house had a big basement. Although. If I had a 'rumpus' for gaming. My wife would never see me.

If used with room you get the context I was going for:

rum·pus room
Noun:
A room, typically in the basement of a house, used for games and recreation.

I assume this will still launch other applications for you? I plan on using this as an emulator launcher as well. I just need to figure out how to launch individual games with their own settings like that.

I saw something with an N64 emulator where it was like a hub. No idea what it was, looked perfect for that though.

I know it is beta and all, but while we are talking about it:

That's not a very pretty button now, is it?

Makes me think that they might be doing another UI overhaul and that's a temporary measure.

What is also interesting, is that my Steam's font has been in italics ever since the last UI change and I never fixed it, so now I'm used to it.
