Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

I imagine I have to disable any skins I have on?

Pixelvision :(

He updates very fast, although this is quite a lot of an overhaul. The Big Picture Mode doesn't look a lot like the original steam skin, so I don't really think he can just "apply" his skin but has to basically create a new skin for the big picture mode.

Why is that? I know the UI is built for controllers...I'm talking about games that do not support gamepads. Instead of using some 3rd party application...have something built right in.

I like this idea, a lot. Gaben needs to get on it.

It would be really nice if there was a workshop-like feature, where people upload their gamepad configurations or scripts, and other people can download them later on.

I like the on-screen "keyboard":

Edit: Great minds etc. :p

Animal Crossing on the N64 used this "daisy wheel" design for typing as well. Great minds do think alike!

It is available for monitors. You can launch it whenever you have Steam open, regardless of display.
Yes, but can you turn it off once you've activated it? I don't wanna be stuck in BPM forever, since there are games I prefer to play on my PC monitor, y'know.

Put simply, can you switch at will?

No once you switch you're forever stuck in Big Picture Mode. No way to turn it off until the beta ends.

Of course you can turn it off at will. Would be kinda pointless if you couldn't.

"later today"

Today is almost over here Gabe.. I know you live in Valve time land but pls :(

PSN is like this. If you're going to release at some random time towards the end of the day, why not just say '00:00 tomorrow'?

its not just a 10ft interface you know, it'll work fine on monitors too. I plan to use it connected to my TV and when just using my laptop. If I know I'm going to be playing some games with a controller, it'll be useful to not have to keep switching between controller and mouse, regardless of how far away you're sitting from whatever display you have.

The thing is... it must be ready to ship right? You don't tell the NY times that it will start today and then release a trailer and a PR message saying it's out when it's not ready. It has to be ready... why not release it..

I'd honestly like to know lol. Does it take a while to go through all the servers or something?

Valve time, also BETA

Unless specified, always assume that when they give any kind of timeframe, they're talking PST, which, seeing as they said later in the evening for BPM, means that most of the rest of the world will be getting it tomorrow.

So is there any solution for a computer system (regular desktop or one of the smaller form factors like the X-51) where I can turn the PC on through a gamepad (like the 360 wireless one) it boots up and starts straight into Steam BPM?

will have to try this out...

but really...been comfy couch pc gaming (with bluetooth M/k, 360 pad for nearly 3 years now)

-and Durante: you never cease to amaze

I was looking for something similar to this but I want to turn on my computer with Logitech Harmony. Is it possible?

seriously - the west coast of the US is just about the last big timezone in the world. PC games are a global market. Just fucking say 'Tuesday' if you're going to wait until the end of the day, as thats what its going to be in most of your markets by the time the monkey flips the switch.

This isn't just aimed at Valve, it goes for any company with stupid releasing methods

Agreed, guess I'll try it out tomorrow then.

It's the rest of the world's fault for not living on the west coast. If you choose not to live there then you can't complain.

What I can't understand is why would you flip the switch at the end of your working day. Surely better the release first thing in the morning so you can deal with the technical issues.

It's like the companies that only release software last thing on a friday night so you've got the whole weekend to deal with bugs and frustration.

Releasing it at the end of the day and you can escape the madness and crashes! Let the customer spend their night fixing things and trying shit out. Have your guys read the forums in the AM and have some answers..

Saves on overtime..

I propose the Moscow timezone for any future announcements.

I'll have to test it but can't you just go to your sound settings, right click the headset and say "Use as my default communication device"? I tested steam chat with the headset and it's working now (voice coming out of headset) but I didn't run a game to see how it behaved.

I haven't messed with it in forever. But, I couldn't get only voice through headset and sound through speakers. If I wanted voice through headset, the game would come through it also, which sucks.

Agreed. This was one of the first things I was told starting my new job, never put things live at the end of the week when everyone's going home for the weekend. It doesn't make sense, primarily due to the possibility of technical issues as you said.

About resolution support.

1080p (16:9) is our directly targeted resolution, as that's the best resolution most HDTVs support. You'll have 720p and 1080p as options in the settings UI, 720p is desirable if your GPU is lower end and doesn't have enough bandwidth to push drawing multiple layers of alpha blended 1080p images on top of each other each frame (as occurs in some of our UI). 720p is also obviously desirable in the event that your TV only supports it.

If you are running on a PC Monitor rather than a HDTV then the default will be to render internally at 1080p and then scale/letterbox to fit whatever resolution and aspect ratio your desktop is set to. If you set to 720p the same will happen.

There is a hidden command line parameter -fulldesktopres, this let's you tell us to render natively at your desktop resolution, so if you are 2560x1600 we'll actually create our render targets that size. Because some of our assets (movies, alpha masks, background images) are authored in 1080p they'll be scaled up (preserving aspect ratio), but your fonts will render at your full resolution and will look super crisp. You'll still get black bars if your aspect ratio doesn't match 16:9, because we haven't put in the time to actually re-layout and utilize space correctly in other aspect ratios (it's hard to design UI that sizes to different aspects vs fixed aspect).

Big Picture runs in a border-less D3D10 window in all these cases, borderless has some minor performance tradeoffs but is crucial to avoid bad resizing/flickering cases when launching into fullscreen d3d games. You can use another hidden (for now at least) command line option -windowed to make the UI run in a normal window that isn't full screen if your desktop resolution is larger than the Big Picture resolution.

Why wouldn't you? I doubt they are going home right after they hit the button too.

I work for a F2P browser MMO company. We are ready for deployment a week before we do. You need to test this shit thoroughly.

And that's just for updates and patches. No big features.

Regarding native gamepad support for games that don't support it....

We aren't solving this in the initial launch. We may do something with keyboard/mouse emulation via gamepad and the in-game overlay in the future. There is some other software that tries to do this already, but it doesn't always work well.

During the beta period we will be working to get most the games in our library tagged as "no gamepad support", "some gamepad support" or "full gamepad support" so we can make it clear to users in the living room whether a game will behave well without a kb/mouse.

Why would you fix shit until the very last minute?

This is a beta actual, not an "Ok we're pretty much done with this thing but don't want to release it just yet" beta. Thorough testing is the modus operandi today, not a final release.

What makes you think they weren't ready a week ago and just want to do a few more rounds of tests before deployment?

And besides, beta, etc. etc.
