Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

I'd totally recommend the wired PC 360 controller. It's only like $30-$40 depending where you go. The wireless one is terrible from my experience. I constantly lost signals and it has some issues with certain games.

I use the wireless one all the time and have never had an issue with it.

the wireless 360 controller? I've personally never had a dropped signal and I'm not even sure how using a wireless one could cause issues over a wired one.

I've only used wireless and I have never lost connection in my 2 years of playing plenty of PC games with it.

That's weird. I went out and bought a wireless receiver back when they first came out and have never had a single problem with it or any of the controllers I've used with it. Maybe you just got a shitty receiver or something?

Can I use this for stuff other than games and web browsing? Think they'll ever build in support for like movie libraries and stuff? I just like the idea of controlling my computer with just a gamepad (not to do any work, mind you).

The vast majority already don't, which is, assuming we're correct on what Valve is exploring, likely the catalyst behind the idea. Creating a method of de facto split-screen can't exactly be used nefariously to effectively remove traditional split-screen if said feature is being ignored.

But at the end of the day, for all we know, all Valve has planned is a system similar to that of the X360 and PS3 in that games that support traditional split-screen can be played with two separate accounts (and, to be honest, a de facto split-screen system is probably setting expectations too high).

I know, even Valve's own games that contain split-screen modes on the consoles have to be hacked on pc, but I can just see "Big Picture Split-Screen Support" plastered under the list of "features" when games could easily have that built in from the outset, requiring only one copy to play.

The official Microsoft wireless receiver has a tendency to break (specifically a fuse). There are posts about this all over the web. It's easy enough to repair with a little soldering. Mine hasn't crapped out since I fixed it the first time.

With the soon to be available software marketplace on steam I assume the spectrum of things you can digitally rent on Big Picture Mode will become larger.

Not that you're biased ;)

How about a variation on the phone text entry model? Use the analog stick to point to 12346789 (centred is 5) and just press A 1,2 or three times to enter a letter. You have the benefit of a recognisable interface (phone keypad), a familiar input method (text message entry), and only one action button so you arent trying to decode what colour does what
Still needs more button presses for no real gain. If gamers are capable of executing the complex input sequences required by modern titles then using a single stick and 4 buttons shouldn't be a problem.

Ah, so that's probably what happened to mine. was working perfectly until one day it just stopped. Can you link to a guide?

edit: nevermind, Google to the rescue.

Totally wishful thinking but I hope BPM brings the rumored "app store" Would be awesome to have Netflix, crackle, youtube apps etc and being able to control them from the couch.

The app store isn't rumoured, Valve has officially confirmed that they will be selling software soon. In fact it was supposed to go live a few days ago but, you know, Valve Time.

I have had issues with a few older games, but never signal loss problems. Did you have an official Microsoft adapter?

They never said which year it was coming out.

Never had major issues with wireless 360 pad, but wired is the way to go. No battery charging, it's alot lighter, no syncing or driver issues and it is cheaper.

I don't know...maybe got a screwed up one? I couldn't go more than like 10ft from the dongle before the signal dropped =\

Did you buy it online? Possibly a knock-off, for a time when Microsoft stopped making them for a bit there were tons of fakes online (Even on Amazon.com through 3rd party sellers)

Although I've had no connection issues, there is an issue with older games from this generation recognizing the triggers correctly on the wireless. Games in the last few years don't have any issues at all though.

I've heard this also. Anecdotaly, I've been around two since they first came out (one for me, one for my brother) and both are still working perfectly.

IIRC the Assassin's Creed games (or just II) don't work with a wireless 360 pad unless you install some unofficial patch.

Edit: found it

Yeah, it's fucking annoying. At least on part 2, they would "work" but the buttons were all mapped wrong and you couldn't map the triggers. The user made patch works perfectly, though. If Ubisoft weren't so incompetent I would have expected them to actually patch it themselves. I think Brotherhood and Revelations both work correctly out of the box at least.

Sure. This is the one I used.

Before I made the soldering connection finalized, I used a tiny piece of aluminum foil to verify that bridging across the fuse fixed the problem.

I kind of stupidly used too cold of an iron and desoldered the entire fuse off, but it seems fine with just the solder bridge.

I would really like the to let me use voice chat through a 360 headset while in game sound comes through speakers/TV like on 360. I'm already using a 360 pad, why not let me use the headset as intended?

I'm using the wireless xbox controller with the reciever, and when I plugged my headset into the controller, it worked. It was a old cell phone headset, not the official one, but It came up on windows as a microphone and worked. (sounded like crap though, as dow most xbox headsets...IMO)

Nope...got it from bestbuy...it was like $70. It was like the the signal would always be out of range and the alignments had to be just right between dongle and controller. Was weird. I remember trying to play SFIV with it and if I was like 10ft away on the couch it would disconnect.

I am sooooooooo looking forward to this, ten metre hdmi cable plugged in, and wireless pc 360 controller ready, if this works well I think I may have to build myself a little steam box.

Was just going to ask about the wireless receiver for my friend. He only has wireless 360 controllers, but I can't seem to find a single seller of the receiver that I'd consider reputable (aka you are going to get the real deal and not some knockoff that may or may not work).

I can't imagine them ever being able to give DOTA 2 good controller support, unless they actually made some changes to the game itself

I can see it working, just not that great.

Courser Movement: Left Analog Stick, L2 to adjusting movement speed.
Abilities 1-4: ABXY buttons
Abilities 5-6: Start+select
"Right Click": R2
Items: L1 + ABXY Start Select
Map Movement: Right Analog Stick, with L2 adjusting move speed.
Attack Command: L3
Unit Management: D-Pad

Hey, if you could play Starcraft on an N64, you could do Dota with a 360 controller.

Use wireless 360 controller with a 360 headset from my couch all the time. Wireless receiver as well for connection and never had an issue 20 feet away.

I dont understand? I have already been able to connect dvi to hdmi to my Tv for years. How is this any different? So its just adding controller support?.. hrmm

No issues with the wireless controller here. Only game I've had an issue with is Assassin's Creed 2.

Guess I was just unlucky with mine then :( Oh well, I have the wired 360 controller and I like it. Nothing to install or batteries to buy/charge and works great.

No it's an entire interface for steam that allows you to navigate steam entirely with a controller. SHOP, PLAY, CHAT, Browse the web all with your gamepad.. It turns the PC into a console interface for couch gaming...

Thats a pretty big difference than having a tv hookup and needing a mouse and keyboard to navigate and play games

Yeah but both game sound and voice chat comes through it rather than just voice.
