It has been added to The List. I may check it out soon as the more I continue to procrastinate with Utena, the likelihood of me watching other anime increases.
I find it weird how the show is basically about fanservice but the art is just so plain.
The main character is the best thing about the show. It's pretty refreshing to see someone like him in anime.
When I looked back for it, it was related to review scores. I guess that makes sense.
In which case, it should be Where All the Waifus Are Made Up and the Posts Don't Matter.

Akatsuki never fails to deliver the douche.
In all seriousness, this whole test is starting to get damn tense. It's a cliche setup with the "something goes wrong during an exam" thing, but the way stuff functions thanks to the setting makes it pretty interesting. Someone fucking with the barrier to make the damage real instead of mental is a neat idea for this kind of thing.
It was also nice to see the student council get that smugness ripped off their face. Though I'm not sure why they thought they could take Akatsuki in the first place. Dude is broken as fuck.

So, I guess I should actually say something about Ringing Bell.
This film was directed by Masami Hata, who I haven't heard of before, but he directed and storyboarded a number of things in the past, including Little Nemo. I really liked the way a lot of shots were framed, with thoughtful use made of depth and symbolic imagery. In addition, a really neat aspect was the use of the seasons as a framing device, and various shots of nature that signified them. Not only does this help to signify the passage of long periods of time in a film that's short on it, but it also functions as a way to establish a coherent world for the characters to inhabit; even more, you could say it indirectly touches on the themes of the work, which involve the circle of life and the inevitability of its progress in nature.
The background art is also really well done, and the animation is extremely expressive. I have to imagine some of the animators studied wild animals because there are sequences of very believable animal animation. I also really liked the way the
scene was animated with brief flashes of light and dark. It provided some very memorable and visceral imagery.
As for the story itself, see my previous post. If I saw this as a child I would be scarred for life. Actually I'm not sure the "as a child" phrase is necessary. The feeling of dread early on isn't something that would be out of place in a Disney film, but where it goes after that... I'm not sure this is a movie made for kids as much as a movie made to destroy them.
If I could make a complaint, it'd be about some of the more on-the-nose dialogue, but I guess that's a function of it being for kids.
Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go crawl into a corner and hug a blanket.

I don't think a P3 adaptation would work as well with P4's shoestring budget given the more serious tone. A movie would allow them to concentrate their funds a little better, right?
edit: or is the implication that P4 is selling so well that they should be able to make a decently budgeted TV series for P3?
