the book will end with Korra without powers and Amon is on the loose... Book 2 will be Korra breaking the chi blocking done by Amon and becomes a fully realized Avatar.

I kinda don't want Amon's story to end so soon since he's such a freaking godlike villain. Not sure how they'll able to top how much of a boss he is with another villain.
That sounds really lame, especially when you think of that as the end of a miniseries. Because there wasn't supposed to be a Book Two when the Amon arc was devised. We don't know how far long writing it they were before Nickelodeon ordered more episodes, but I'm sure they had an ending in mind, and unless it involved Korra meeting a sticky end (unlikely), then they'll probably stick to it and have a new status quo to be disrupted in Book Two.
My theory is that Amon is going to use the power of love to unite the Avatar and himself in bringing equality to the world.
So I caught up from episode two today. The show is pretty great so far, but I wish they would delve into the bender/nonbender society a bit more. We aren't really sure what the populous really thinks of the whole situation.
I'm also glad Lin and Tenzin got to actually do something and not look like complete redshirts this time. It's annoying that they had to make Mako a douche to Asami to realize his feelings for Korra (instead of just manning up from the get-go and admitting he liked her best), but I figured it was gonna happen. I just hope Asami doesn't get completely chucked under the bus and become an Equalist or some stupid shit like that just because she's salty. Hey, maybe she can end up with Bolin.
I'll be extremely pissed if Asami becomes an equalist for that reason. Shipping aside, that would just be an awful, awful reason for her to change sides.
I'd like to think that these are friends who can have conflicts in their group without one of them becoming a bad guy. The original Team Avatar had plenty of inner conflict.
EDIT: Seems like a lot of people here really want Koh to make an appearance.
I heavily diagree. They stepped up their fighting choreography big time imo. The bending istelf was a bit lacking in some parts, but the rest was top notch.
I don't know what you're watching, but I think the animation is cleaner.. and maybe smoother, but the fighting styles the elements were based on is really lacking. A lot of bending moments are simply throw their arms around to bend. One of my biggest let downs about Pro Bending, aside from being incredibly boring, was it was mostly boxing jabs outside of the big 'finishing' moves.

The description from next week's episode has changed a little bit. Still the same title (
Turning the Tides
), but the old description read as:
The Equalists begin to attack Republic City.
The new one is:
Republic City gets bombarded by the Equalists.
I think the slight word change is key here, since it suggests that
the aerial bombardment of Republic City, in particular the dock yard, which we saw in the "finale" preview is actually from next week's episode, and not specifically the finale. The episode title actually kind of coincides with that. I thought it would be another Tarrlok episode, due to the suggestion of tides and water, but perhaps it suggests turning the tides in regards to the navy. Who knows what those boats are; they could just be cargo ships, or modern day variations on the Fire Navy, who may have landed in Republic City since things are starting to go south after Korra was captured. Why would they land in Republic City? Remember, the four nations have a stake in Republic City's success: they indirectly run the council despite it being a sovereign city state, and if they see that the council isn't representing the four nation's interests, but their own selfish ends, they're not going to be happy. Add to that the fact that a band of terrorists are practically running free in the city, kidnapping and taking away civilian's, council members' and metalbender police's bending, they're going to consider action. That might also explain why the Equalists are bombing them.

I think it stems from almost none of the main cast having any traditional training. Mako and Bolin both use more MMA-style bending, Korra "lacks restraint" and Lin predominantly uses metalbending which doesn't really have a style it's rooted in. The various criminals/triads are presumably self-taught also. Tenzin is probably the only one who has had any formal teaching in a bending discipline and taken it to heart. And he barely does anything.
I agree that some of the characters were not developed enough. Hopefully that happens as we move forward. I like all the characters, but more time should be given to their backstories, and what drives them forward. This happened over 3 seasons in the original, so hopefully they spend more time on it next season.

Someone on reddit posted a picture of a fire nation boat and emblem, supposedly from the trailer. So I think the fire nation may be coming to assist. And that would make sense - Amon is going from petty terrorist to waging outright war. Someone has to step in. Even the fact that the Avatar went missing in the city would cause heads to turn. The leaders of the four nations must be wondering what the hell is going on in that city.
Great episode. I really want to find out how Amon is able to do this crap. First he can take away people's powers and now he can just straight up overpower someone who is probably the strongest blood bender on the planet.
And a grown up Aang is what I've been waiting for all season and I have to say I wasn't disappointed by it but grown up Sokka was not how I would have pictured him.
But you know, for a book called "Air" there is an extreme lack of air bending being shown.
Yeah I wish Korra had those "filler" episodes like ATLA so the group can unwind and play off each other.
Like this whole season we've been in Republic City...and I barely know anything about it? Those "filler" episodes in ATLA helped build the world. We haven't had much of that here. Like I know more about Ba Sing Se than I do Republic City.

Yeah, a few episodes with them just having adventures in the city would be great. We haven't really seen much of the people of republic city, and Korra hasn't done much to help them. In the original show, it seems like every episode Aang was helping a town, or a group of people, or something.
I love how fast the story is moving, but the show did get hit a bit because of the lack of filler episodes, which really helped flesh out the original.
Great episode! It was awesome seeing Aang go into the Avatar state and take away Yakone's bending. Pure badass.
Would've been nice to have a gotten a better explanation for Yakone and Tarlocks ability to bloodbend multiple people in broad daylight other than just that there are benders born with exceptional skills but that'll do I guess.
Amon completely shrugging off Tarlock's bending was crazy and to top it off he takes away his bending too. Now that is one thing that deserves a legit explanation. How does he take away people's bending and is not affected by the second most powerful bloodbender in the history of the world? Very interested to find out who/what is behind the mask.
My criticisms/the negatives: This season needed less probending and shipping (they pushed the romance too hard and too fast) and a few episodes that were somewhat slower and developed the city more and certain people (for example paying some more attention to say people who are not benders). character interactions and development that was less romance focused than what we got so far for Korra's friends especially Mako would not be bad. That and I would have liked more creative bending the fighting and the bending was not as good as the first show and I think they could have done better. Still, it is a good show and I am entertained.

Speaking of bloodbending, I thought it was clear that it was the amulet they were wearing was allowing them to bloodbend at such a level since when Yakone was attempting to kill Aang he made sure that his amulet was showing.

Hmm guess Tarrlok wasn't wearing it or it's hidden but from the flashback it seemed like thats what was helping power Yakone's bloodbending even though he likely could've done it without it.

Does it really matter how or why? Sokka's explanation makes enough sense to me. Some how they're gifted enough to be able to do it without the full moon, like Sparky Sparky Boom man could firebend with his mind.
I'd rather it be something like a moon amulet than lolgenetics. Bloodbending wasn't "rare" it was just a high level technique that had actual outside requirements for you to be able to do it. The fact that they took away the full moon thing is utter bullshit, imo. Toph was only able to metalbend because she was blind so her other senses were heightened, she was able to teach others the ability to feel the impurity in the metal but even then they can't bend any metal as was shown. Tarrlok's and Yakone's ability to bloodbend without a full moon because LOLGENETICS is a shitty plot imo. At least a moon amulet would make it a bit more believable.
EDIT:
Amon didn't get totally effected by blood bending because he's part machine calling it now. He's related to one of those people who were living in the air temple that had that wacky scientist guy, calling it now x2.

Interesting. I never saw that, but it certainly backs up my theory.
Considering the stake they have in Republic City, and the ramifications it has on their place in the world (especially if Amon takes over), I'd be surprised if the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom armies didn't roll in, especially when they realise what a fucking mess the place is in:
- The Avatar kidnapped by a bloodbending councilman.
- Rogue energybending terrorist taking away people's bending.
- The city's king of industry building robomechs to fight the metalbender police.
- The pro-bending arena being blown up.
- Draconian anti-non-bender laws being passed and ruthlessly enforced.
- Terrorists on motorcycles abducting high profile benders from the streets.
It's a complete mess, and it seems the authorities in Republic City have completely dropped the ball. If there's as good a time as any to mobilise the army, it's when word reached them that Equalists kidnapped the Avatar, whilst Tarrlok's ruse was still believed.

I think none of them were how I'd picture them, but they were all great and felt true to their characters. I instantly warmed to them in a way that I haven't warmed to most of LoK's cast.

Yep. I think Mako would look like less of a jerk if we got time to know him and his brother, especially the sacrifices Mako had to make for Bolin. The reason it's coming up so much this week is I think the contrast between the LoK cast and the old Gaang is apparent in the flashbacks.

I don't think less pro-bending is a good thing. Sure it upsets a few people who want "real" bending, but I'm not too bothered about that as I care more about the universe, where it is going, and the stories told in it than fights. Plus I think the ones in Legend of Korra are neat anyway.
But the romance stuff was definitely pushed too much. The whole 'The Spirit of Competition' episode should've been scrapped unless it served a purpose, which would've been to put the shipping to rest. It's only gotten worse since, with the Mako<-->Korra<--Bolin love triangle changing to Korra<-->Mako<-->Asami love triangle. And Mako's "feelings" for Korra feel so forced and unconvincing, whilst his stringing along of Asami makes him look like a douche. And whilst there's nothing wrong with there being douche characters, the writers are also trying to make Mako into a sympathetic heartthrob too, and that's ridiculous.
But as it stands, the shipping stuff is just zapping quality seconds from other stuff, like fleshing out Mako and Bolin. I mean, at this rate, Asami has more character development than that pair. I think episode 5 would've been better served not being a forced romance episode to satisfy the fangirl shippers, but an episode about Mako and Bolin's past. As I suggested earlier, perhaps an episode about a bending triad member trying to blackmail Mako or Bolin into a matchfixing scheme by having them throw a match (and Korra's reaction to this, maybe?) would've been a much better use of the 23 minutes. It suits the period, it gives us some insight into the bending triads, and it also opens the door for some proper Mako and Bolin back story. Instead we just got smooching and (admittedly hilarious) tears.
I guess this will be my first post among Avatar GAF, but I have to say that I am really enjoying the Avatar series. I decided to sign up for Netflix earlier this year, and while browsing the shows I got into watching Avatar. (never paid much attention to the show prior to this) Anyway I went from Season 1 episode 1, all the way to the season 3 finale and I can't believe what I had been missing out on all these years. The show is fantastic and has everything ranging from great animation and action to quality characters and comedy. In fact, I would go so far to say that Avatar: The Last Airbender is the best show ever put out on Nickelodeon. (Toph, Sokka, Zuko, and Uncle Iroh are all incredibly memorable characters to me)
Anyway I just finished The Last Airbender a few weeks ago, and finally got caught up on Korra. (watched my first episode live today!) I can't wait for the next two weeks of the show. Although I'm kind of disappointed that the show will go on break soon, not to mention how short the seasons are for Korra. For what my opinion is worth, going straight from watching the Last Airbender for the first time to Korra, I have to say that Korra lacks a strong cast unlike the previous series. (really miss the original cast, but seeing the flashbacks were a treat) I noticed how others here think the show plays out too fast, and I have to agree on that front too, I think Korra has some good characters, but they never get a chance to interact with each other because there is no downtime in the series.
Anyway, overall The Last Airbender and Korra are both excellent shows but I wish that the new team Avatar had more downtime in between all the conflict in order to develop the characters more. (I will say though, that I think Korra is a better lead character than Aang, and that Amon is my favorite villain in the series)
It depends what your friend is in the show for, really. If he just likes to watch fights, I can kind of understand why people would find it slow-paced. If he's someone who likes seeing a plot unfold, with new layers revealing themselves each week, Legend of Korra is damn amazing.
It's bordering fan fiction levels at this rate, especially if they go Makorra now. It's like, the most awful about-face you can do as far as romance subplots go. Completely, panderingly awful and unconvincing.

There's a big difference from Combustion man who gets beat up by a boomerang and Yakone who simultaneously bloodbends the most powerful Avatar in the history of the world, the most powerful earthbender in the history of the world, an entire police squad, the entire Republic City council and about 30 bystanders. Thats pretty freaking powerful. Not to mention as far as anyone had known, you could bloodbend one person at a time.. during a full moon only. And that power causes Aang to take away his bending which as far as we know is the only time that he has ever had to do that after he did it to Fire Lord Ozai.
An explanation for such power wouldn't have been a bad thing. The episode was amazing but just saying; what's wrong with explaining it?

Yes. Then Korra and Asami can cry over him together, before realising how much of a douchebag he was after they've stopped grieving.
The thing is, I have nothing against romance or shipping. I think shipping is rather unhealthy to the individual, but hey, we're all allowed to dream, right? But when the actual canon looks like it's going to handle the romance subplot in a manner that suggests trolling whilst slowly satisfying a fangirl's whim is the main objective, rather than character development purposes, then something is seriously wrong.
I still love the show, but I really wish there was a romance filter or something. It's getting too much right now.
