What are you expectations for Persona 5 (still not announced)

Just curious about this GAF.

Should they drop the high school setting ? What mythology should they use ? Should it be harder/easier ? Any specific gameplay improvements you'd like to see ?

Personnally, I'd like some better level-design for the dungeons, since I hate randomly generated dungeons. I never got that especially in games considered as "dungeons RPGs", shouldn't they have a proper level design for each dungeon ? The reason why I liked dungeons in P4 was mainly because of the (amazing) setting each one of them had, and certainly not because of the level design.

Sidequests that takes you to actual new places would be a nice addition too. And a bigger overworld. I don't have any request about the story/setting, I trust them on this. Also, Catherine's engine please.

-Meguro OST
-Play as a girl
-Grimdark atmosphere
-Demon negotiations
-Be on the PS3/360 and not in handhelds!

I want to be able to play as a girl, if they're going to continue to insist upon social links.

This. Also, MOAR SOCIAL LINKS!! Freakin' love that stuff. I also really like the "lighter" tone of Persona 3. The daytime stuff is pretty cheery and I love the contrast between that and the dark hour stuff.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
College or yuppie setting would be nice.

As long as it's for PS360 with Catherine's engine I'll be happy. Also an older cast would be cool, Persona 2 EP style; I don't think they need to drop the high school setting but maybe they should shake things up a bit and make the protagonist be a teacher or something.

Edit:

-Demon negotiations

This NEEDS to come back, I want to dance and imitate the sound of motorcycles in front of demons again.

I'd want them to go for dungeons designed to the tips of their fingers as well, but I can imagine that this would negatively affect the overall experience, in a way. Your first exploration will be a better one, but coming back to it in a new game+ or to grind ... not sure how I'd think about it.

I doubt they'll drop the high school setting. This game is still about adolescence, be it your past or somebody's current.

The only improvement I'd be looking for: more J-Pop battle themes. Maybe you could set them yourself in a menu, switch to a different one, once you've gotten bored of the previous one.

I've only played P4 - which is a crime, I know - but I think that if they continue that approach to the game here's what I'd like to see:

- Continued ability to control each character in your party (I heard that in P3 you can only control the MC... still a big deterrent for me to try that game)
- As others have mentioned, Catherine engine would be great.
- Character customization through personas is phenomenal in 4, try to stay close to that formula
- College setting as opposed to High School would be nice
- I'm actually a fan of brighter atmospheres, but that doesn't seem to be SMT's thing :p
- God it's so hard to think of things that would make P4 better.

I'd hate to be in Atlus' shoes. Lots of expectations for this game.

Or maybe they could change with the story, like in Tales of games.

Then get Persona 3 Portable since you can control all characters.

College setting, a more pressing story like in P3P. More evolved and deep social links. Better dungeon and monster graphics and attacks. You should also be able to recover health and magic while walking in the dungeons. More costumes too.

  • Cell Phone (maybe something similar to GTAIV's phone but also including Catherine's text system)
  • Option to be female
  • Less hassle when creating Persona with skills you want
  • Demon Negotiation from Persona 1/2
  • Rumor System from Persona 2
  • Surprise appearance of Chie Satonaka

Persona 4's difficulty level would be nice. Mythology is definitely the usual mix like in previous games so I wouldn't worry about it.

I remember Hashino mentioning that his team wanted to try a different setting for the next persona game. I'd say a college setting would be perfect for P5. MC should be at least 20 years of age or something around that range...

Now that looks like an excellent design for an adult protagonist.

The press-turn battle system doesn't need that much modification, but I'm sure they'll spice things up a bit with an added feature or two. The dungeons in P4 were an improvement over P3's, but we still need to have solid dungeon designs rather than a random mess. Also, I agree that providing unique side quests with their own unique areas, even if they were few and limited in number, can add a lot.

As for the engine, I don't know if it's possible for a long ass game like a Persona title, but Catherine's would be great.

Yeah, adding features to MC's cellphone sounds like a good idea. And demon negotiations should be back this time.

I would like very much to have it so I can get every social link without following a perfect run guide. It's the only old school rpg thing that it does that I can't stand.

Now, if they decide to make branching paths and make decisions matter other than what social links you max out, all bets are off. I will play it to completion and not bitch a bit. Consequences are what I really want.

College like setting would be fine. Do all persona take place on earth? Otherwise some steampunk or scifi setting could rock. Unrealistic probably but having the option to dating males/same sex would be very nice.

Persona will probably always take place in Japan. Unless we get Persona: Strange Journey.

I really hope they drop the kiddish highschool setting and go for something mature like the main SMT series. It's always been one of the main drawbacks with Persona for me.

I also want them to get rid of the dating sim part, just put more focus on realistic relationships between adults, not just trying to date every single person of the opposite sex through cheesy clichés scenes.

I wouldn't mind a uni setting, preferrably an office work setting, a bigger emphasis on the combat system and demons alignment. They need to add more choices/branching in the storyline so that you're just not forced to be a good-doer and save the world.

Gameplay-wise, I'd enjoy a switch to a real time combat system, with timing-based chain combos. They definitely need better dungeons design aswell.

I'd really dig a Persona 2 experience mixed with a light social system.

I don't really like the P3/P4 approach, randomly generated dungeon with no exploration outside of that.

Also, all the "deep" social system shound't be mandatory to have a decent outcome in generating Persona, it's time consuming and not that appealing, or fun.

I really loved the games tho, even with this flaws that hindered the experience.

P2 Innocent Sin and P2 Eternal Punishment are still the best Persona experience for me.

More social links and a very easy difficulty would be nice (I don't want to spend ages grinding to get to the next story part).

Catherine is built on Gamebryo, the same engine that powers Oblivion and Fallout 3/New Vegas, so I can't imagine why it couldn't handle Persona 5.

Keep social links (QQ more P1 & P2 purists).
Option to be female
Keep the battle system.
Keep the music and character designs.
Better dungeon design would be cool.
Demon negotiation would be interesting as well.

I'd kinda like to see a college setting. Like juggling a part-time job and deciding whether or not to go to class a certain day. Shoot, what would be interesting (but would never happen) would be to implement appearance customization. Like opt to wake up early for class and shave (feeling groggy but looking more presentable) or opt to sleep in (feel better but looking a bit rugged for not shaving). Certain chicks will talk to you more based on your appearance. I dunno, random idea.

Also maybe a bit of a darker tone. More like Persona 3. What would be interesting would be a throwback dungeon that takes place entirely in first person view.

Man, even a full fledged Shin Megami sequel would be awesome.

Surprise appearance of Chie Satonaka
I like this.

If you're going to ask for the return of a character from Persona 4, you might as well go for the gold.

I expect more Persona. Because apparently I don't care what it is but I would like some more of it. I just started playing Sakura Wars yesterday and it's scratching that exact same itch for me. So apparently the characters, setting, visuals, gameplay don't matter to me at all. But the flow and atmosphere of the game with social interaction,in a somewhat real world setting, leading into the battle system is what makes those games for me. I guess.

Atlus could deliver a classic Persona style game without social interaction and stuff but with demon negotiations and unique dungeons instead:

Persona2ep.jpg

I can't believe how good this game was.

If they stick to Persona 3 and 4's formula I'm fine too but we've had two of these now and I loved the shit out of Devil Summoner 2 and the classic Personas.

Either way, just announce it, Atlus.

EDIT: I found Persona 4 and Devil Summoner 2 too easy on normal difficulty setting. I tend to spare the hard difficulty for the second run in which I go for 100% so I'd appreciate if they made it a little harder like Persona 2 and 3.

I think a college/university or a workplace setting would really make sense because the fanbase has naturally aged along with the series.

-Enhance the social link system and tie it more directly in to the main story if possible.
-Maybe mix up the 1 year calender year to keep the timings fresh
-Non scripted cell phone would be great

Other then that nothing too drastic is needed.

I hope you're going to buy the PSP port of Innocent Sin when it comes out in a few months.

As much as I loved P3 and P4, I've come to accept that there will probably never be a console P5.

Atlus hasn't made a new SMT (as in entirely brand new) game since 2009. Atlus has made exactly one console game this generation (and its a puzzle platformer). Atlus (Japan) as a company doesn't exist anymore. They're a mere subsidiary to a primarily mobile company who bought them primarily for those reasons, not to blow away money on making expensive console games that will sell less units than if it was a PSP/Vita/3DS game or whatever.

I'll believe a Persona 5 PS3 (and I guess 360?) game when I see it. I'll take Persona 5 anyway I can get it though.
Unless they outsource the game to Bamco or Square-Enix

As for the hypothetical game itself, more social links and deeper social links, expand on them don't get rid of them. Better dungeon level design, and change up the cast of the characters a bit.

Do not add regenerating health/magic, dear god why? Make the game harder not easier.

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
lots of people trying to play as a girl? didn't see that coming

i'd love a college setting, personally. the difficulty levels of P4 were also really good (easy reduced grind time but still kept battles interesting).

fuckkk i want to continue my P4 game.... need to find time...

You didn't see women wanting to play as a woman in a game so focused on personal relationships, including dating, coming?

I would kindly ask for some actual level design in the gameplay portions, a dungeon is without a doubt the most boring and bland game enviroment ever envisioned by game makers so the less I feel like I am in one the better. Also a game with a lot, lot, lot less bloat would be in order so that I am not playing a 100+ hour game where I am bored out of my damn mind and just going through the motions for the vast majourity of my wasted time with it. If you do not have 100 hours of worthwhile content then why be that long? I don't understand this development mentality at all. Some brevity in the scenarios would be much appreciated, as well as a better general sense of pacing and a swift death to mindless repetition.

But then I've been asking these from RPG's for about a decade now and the only one that answered the call was Vagrant Story.

I want an urban setting but no high school (maybe workplace or college like some suggested). I'm a bit indifferent about social links, wouldn't miss the system but if it's going to be there I'd like to see it being worked differently. Demon negotiating happening in some form would be nice too.

- Very fucked up and twisted plot, with treason, occult themes, and misterious dark story, but easy to understand.
- Good anime-style graphics and good quality anime cutscenes (P3 had shitty ones)
- Outstanding soundtrack, but we know that meguro always composes good things to listen.
- Main characters in their mid 20s or 30s, no more silly high schoolers, college or workplace setting would be great
- Interaction with internet, similar to GTA4's, the plot could be related to people who get killed when they receive a blank email with no sender.
