I bought a 1tb SN850X from WD with heatsink for 250 bucks from Walmart last week. My 3070TI I bought at the same time was only 900. The SSD was the biggest sticker shock. The SSD I have in my PS5 Pro is a little big pricier and 2tb so it is worth > 500 bucks right now, lol.

They don't care about the average consumer on this end (which is fast becoming the only end as factories are restructuring all operations away from consumer products for low market value.) They're pricing RAM and storage for as much as they can because the demand is higher than they can keep up with, and if they price it affordably for you to buy, they would run out and not be able to serve the most demanding market.

Sucks, but unless there's a breakthrough in storage basus or manufacturing, or unless Al pops it's bubble, you the average buyer cannot have what you want at the price you are willing to pay.

It's greed, but it's also a production reality.

Reduce heat going to the SSD. I suggest buying one with a heatspreader if it will fit. That will improve the life.

Also dust, a good case and regular cleaning. In fact a good case will improve heat and dust!

Next you can buy cheap slow storage for archived large files so you don't waste your good drive io or capacity.

Finally, buy once cry once. Buy a good brand and a decent capacity that has firmware updates that you can download and health status. I try to keep my drives not super full(<80% is ideal) as well but this is more of a best practice than a lifespan tip.

I bought the WD 2TB Non PS branded version for my PS5 in late 2023 for $150. Upgraded to the PS5 Pro and didn't need it since it already came with 2 TB. Saved the drive for the Steam Machine thinking I'd buy the 512gb base model and upgrade it to 2TB myself but the price for the Steam Machine was ridiculous to me. Maybe I should just sell it on FBM.

I know this doesn't help but file transfers to and from my addon drive on my pro seems to have a much faster transfer speed than the built in drive. It's anecdotally measurable when reading or writing between drives. YMMV.

3 protips

Keep it cool with good airflow and a heat spreader (like a copper heatsink seated with a silicone thermal pad). Heat is the major factor that accelerates SSD wear.

Keep about 10% to 20% of the drive empty so the controller has room for wear leveling and cleanup. Running an SSD too full can hurt both performance and longevity.

Paid Total $267.49 after tax and shipping for 1tb SN850x with heatspreader on 7-25-26 shipped and sold by SanDisk Technologies. I thought they broke off from WD. I'm guessing they are still selling stock because mine came with SanDisk branded invoice. Ordered from Wal-Mart.
