The Greedy just got greedier

Log into my email, and got a notification from Youtube that my "advanced settings" got revoked. I go to my studio page to check for any violations, and nothing. Turns out, they want either phone-number verification or a copy of my driver's license. Thing is, my channel was made an official music channel via a reputable publisher years ago. Verification shouldn't be an issue. Anything of that nature should (and I presume could) be taken up with them.

My guess is, they just want to milk more of my private data. F****** wow, man.

100%. They want a reliable "key" to be able to tie data they collected from your YT page to other data other vendors have in their relational databases or whatever.

All under the guise of...internet safety or something?

Why are you entitled to stream your music on YouTube w/o meeting their requirements?

Is this in some global constitution somewhere?

They value your privacy, meaning that they sell it to lot of parties and get rich on your behalf.
That's not how a company like YouTube benefits from data. Your phone number is barely worth anything to them other than maybe to be able to tie your account to other data they have. They do not, and never have "sold data."

A users Advertising id is a lot more valuable if they can pin a real person to it.
The more Google knows about you, the more your data is worth and the more they can charge for it.

Yeah it's about being able to target ads to you. The better they are at doing that, the more money they can charge per ad to advertisers.

Which is exactly why a company like Google would never sell that data to anyone else. It's like suggesting SpaceX would sell their trade secrets to other rocket companies. Only something you do when you are going out of business.

Wah wahhh I can't stream my music videos to every human being in the world for free, in a way that actually makes me money, from the comfort of my home without GIVIING SOMEONE MY PHONE NUMBER!!! WAHHHHHH!
I see nothing wrong with them selling data if they're upfront about it, but saying they don't is probably the most ignorant thing I've read in a long time

Well they absolutely don't sell your data and I am not ignorant on this.

They make 10's of billions of dollars a year on their advertising, which is all empowered by the data they collect about people. Why would they sell it for a tiny fraction of the revenue they generate every single year?

And it would all have to be completely secretly on some sort of grey or black market and they'd have to have somehow gotten away with this for decades w/o being caught.

Sarcasm aside, it's moot, I believe. As I said in the initial post, my channel was established through a licensed publisher. Any of that info can be obtained from them if it is truly related to (as they said, not me) verification. But it seems incredibly clear it isn't about that.

"Sold" means just as much as "buy" when it comes to consumer issues nowadays. They simply hire a wordsmith and it all goes under the rug. They can say they don't sell your information with a straight face, all while exchanging it with their thousands of partners for various reasons. Advertisers have no reason to play ball if they're kept in the dark on where their money is going either

They do not provide any sort of access to any identifiable information about uses. Not their names, phone numbers, emails, etc.

They have tools that show aggregate data but it's completely useless as far as identifying an individual.
