PS5 shipments top 95.3 million

PlayStation 5 has shipped 95.3 million units worldwide, Sony announced in its financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2026.

A total of 1.6 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped during the three months ended June 30, 2026, which is down 0.9 million from the same period the previous fiscal year.

Here are a couple of additional statistics:

There are 125 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network as of June 30, 2026, which is up two million from the same period the previous fiscal year.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software combined sold 66.1 million units during the three months ended June 30, 2026, which is up 0.2 million from the same period the previous fiscal year. Six million units were first-party titles, which is down 0.19million from the same period the previous fiscal year. 82 percent of software sales were full game software digital downloads, which is down one percent from the same period the previous fiscal year.

Getting real close to that 100M milestone!

It's down 1.6M for the quarter compared to the PS4 launch aligned so the gap continues to widen. Was trailing PS4 by 3.3M last quarter, now it's 4.9M (95.3M vs. 100.2M).

Will be interesting to see if GTA6 will manage to push it past PS4 (or beyond) in Q3.
PS5 was at 93M at the end of March. This quarter they sold 1.6M, so they aren't now at 95.3M: they are at 94.6M.
It was closer to 94M (93.7M), with the additional 1.6M they're at 95.3M as of Q1.

If they can get some good bundles or a limited price drop for GTA6 they will easily surpass 100 million by the end of the fiscal year.
They'll blow past 100M this fiscal year either way. Likely already within the calendar year, which would be their Q3.

They'd need to sell less than 40% of last years Q2 (3.9M) and Q3 (8.0M) numbers to not reach 100M by the end of 2026.

Color me somewhat impressed, I was expecting around 1 million, 1.6 is way better than expected after the price hike.

95.3, it will cross the 100 mark this calendar year.

Before price hike it had easy to overtake PS4, now I don't think so but still could do 108/110.

Componekts prices are killing every in the business.

Same, expected way worse results across the board.

Interesting titbit is that Sony stockpiled RAM at least for this year, so probably they are adamant about keeping the price during the GTA VI release window.

Sold only 1.6 million for this quarter, is a clear sign that the price increases were not to people's liking.
But with the dram and nand markets completely screwed by the AI server market, there isn't much Sony can do.

End of life numbers. And that's not even sell through.
Yeah, but this is due price increases rather than end of console generation looming. If they somehow manage to drop prices down in the next 12-24 months, I think there is still a good 20-30 million units left in them.

No, they're not.

Q1 is usually the slowest quarter of the year sales-wise.

If they sell 1.6 million in Q3, then it's end of life numbers
besides not wanting to lose money on the console due to inflation, it is exactly because they anticipate units sales numbers to be slowing that they are comfortable raising prices. Their accounting probably tells them they will basically maintain earnings status quo (at the higher price point with lower unit sales)

These are shipped numbers though. So the true effect of the price hike isn't really reflected so far. Next quarter is going to paint a clearer picture.

Shipped numbers as always, but end of las quarter shops were fully stocked. If the sales had collapsed, they wouldn't have ordered more.

Still, from 2.5 to 1.6 is a steep decline, but better than expected.

Yes, but we also have to consider that the previous quarter (FYQ4) they sold 1.5M and the previous year (FYQ1) they sold 2.5M, which combined with being a soft quarter regarding top selling games I'd say the quarter sales aren't bad at all. Particularly knowing some people got the console the previous quarter because knew was going to increase this one.

I think it hardware sales will improve during the 2nd half of the year, not only because of the traditional seasonal sales, but because of release of titles like Wolverine, Tokon, GTA or the first non-crossgen CoD (even if it's a remake).

They did sell MLB, GT, Destiny and Helldivers to the masses, and Marvel Tokon has potential to be the best selling fighting game ever.

Btw in the presentation they highlighted that Marathon Season 2 continued with good retention numbers and received many new users. Didn't say nothing negative about it.

We don't know how the stock situation was and how many of the 1,6 million actually sold.

Congratulations to Sony management and the shareholders. Tremendous numbers for what is the lowest-effort Playstation generation (so far), imho.

That is true, but we are in the ramp up for GTA6. PS5 sales should be soaring through the roof.
The pre-orders for GTA6 are already enormous. And in a normal market, consoles would be selling a lot more than 1.6M.

but PS4 never had Price Hikes
Yeah, I don't have time to check but it feels like you could get a PS4 for $200 back in 2019, even if you adjust for inflation that should only be (very)roughly $300 today..

It's pretty incredible that Ps5 has managed to keep up the same pace.

Imagine if this gen had been a typical gen, with no price increases...no production issues in 2020/ early 2022, etc...

At this point you could get a PS4 easily for 200 bucks in many promos lol.

They won't be the only business blinded by random covid success. The danger around that good fortune is not having the benefit of learning economic lessons about your customers. Which is what I think we're seeing now at scale.

100m will be surpassed during this holiday season with GTAVI.

That is very likely. But selling "only" 6.5M units in the year of GTA6 is nothing to brag about.
If this was a normal hardware year, with not dram and nand crisis do deal with, Sony would probably sell +10M units.

6m units in the holiday quarter for a 6 years old console sold at current absurd prices that are pricing out the exact market segments that typically buy the console at this stage is good.
Of course in another timeline with price drops instead of price increases they could have beaten records but it is what it is.
