"Canceled" Myst game, Project Anglerfish

Evidently, Cyan couldn't get a publisher, and for whatever reason doesn't seek crowdfunding solutions. I'm not terribly pleased about this situation, as I like the footage shown. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I'm a huge Myst fan, and have been for most of my life. I'm sure games will continue so long as the world itself doesn't completely go to pot, but there's no denying it: we're in a time of transition, to be sure.

First thread (not much of a thread-starter, me), so hopefully I'm not ruffling any feathers. Just... thought poor Cyan deserved an honorable mention here. Pour one out, I guess?

Anyone remember URU?
Set in the real word but linking to others. In Uru The Myst series was a set of fictional books in the fictional real world.
Sounds 'Meta' :)

Bring back Uru and make it meta multiplayer again. Including a VR version seeing as Riven VR came out really well.
Seems publishers only wanted to make remakes and not new games.

I remember Uru. The Relto system (in which you made your own little house with things you found on your journey) was really fun.

It was interesting enough. It didn't feel quite like Myst, though, but it was fun. Played it as a family way back in the day, but only for a little bit before it... well... died. Y'know.

I remember they had to retool much of the game as it was originally supposed to be multiplayer but got released as a single player. I remember the house with the empty bookshelf that was supposed to eventually get filled with lots of different ages.

Oh, it was actually multiplayer, until it eventually shut down. They made a singleplayer version later. Had something to do with a long-dead company I think was called "GameTap." My family and I played it for a while after it got resurrected by the fans. That lasted a while, but when we attempted to go back to it later, it didn't work. :-(

There are reasons why a massively-multiplayer adventure game isn't the best idea, but darned if I didn't like it for the novelty. It felt like a fun little club. Not an exclusive club or anything. Rather like a fellowship of fans sharing a space. Game felt cozy in that way.

Lip quivered a little there. Ahem. Sorry.

and instead we got the lowsy firmament...

Obduction was great though.

Kinda crazy when you think back to the times when Myst was one of the best-selling IPs.
people use to like using their brains, instead of content slopping themselves into a brainless coma.

That is why order of the sinking star is gonna be the actual Goty of 2026 but no one will know.

I don't think I'd ever give Firmament much of a chance, because of the whole AI thing. That was a pretty stark disappointment for me.

In a perfect world, people would have the patience to give a proper adventure game a chance. With the kind of enthusiast-level machine a game like this would have needed, you're kind of limited to "just" gamers. Thing about Myst and Riven was, these were games which could have run on anyone's machine. Well, provided it was equipped with a CD-ROM drive. That was a big part of their success, I think.

Anyone looking for a little mystery and escapism easily got both out of those games. A far part of it, too, I know, was the novelty. I suppose using a computer to explore other worlds isn't nearly so novel, now.

I don't know how successful the Riven remake was. Nor do I know if gamers have the patience to enjoy games like this anymore. I know I want more actual adventures. Places to go, things to see, things to think about.

EDIT: Order of the Sinking Star, eh? I'll keep my eyes on that one, but I will admit I wasn't the biggest fan of The Witness...

Firmament is definitely at the bottom of their work. Probably my only dissapointment I've had with any of their games.
Its weird that after the reasonable success they had with obduction and the remakes that they'd go the route of laser/physics puzzles.

I hope their next project is a return to formula

I'm reading some of the youtube comments for that Aglerfish video, someone points out that the Son has the ink to write the age. He's writing the age as your playing it, and possibly changing the age based on what your doing in there.
First time i've seen someone get forced to enter an age. Grab a hand and force you in. Usually you have to do it yourself. Now I'm picturing a prankster running around, touching books to randos on the subway.

I guess there's no reason why that wouldn't work! Rather disturbing, really, and one hell of an assassination technique.

The idea of being subject to the whims of an obsessive madman with godlike powers to change the very world you're being forced to inhabit sounds frankly terrifying, and I'm totally down for that. That could make for a very interesting game.
